@ Graceway Sports Centre

The children in Years 5 and 6 will be participating in our first Spring Term PE Showcase this week.  We are pleased to bring field hockey back to our PE curriculum this year. Children in Years 5 & 6 have been refining the skills required to play, from positioning and passing to travelling with the ball and shooting.

Children have been divided into 5 teams for a mini-tournament.  Each team will participate in a mini league where the top two teams on goal difference will compete in a grand final.

Thank you to K & J in Year 6 for designing this fantastic poster.

I look forward to seeing as many parents and community friends at the event as possible!

Regards,

Mr George

Year 6 enjoy participating in TCHCA ‘Hello Tourist’ initiative

yr-6-hello-tourist-nov-2015 (11)Year 6 recently received an invitation from the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association, which requested their participation in their Hello Tourist initiative. The Hello Tourist scheme aims to make children more aware of the tourism industry here in the TCI by giving insight into the variety of job opportunities that this growing sector offers; why tourism is important to our islands economy and financial well-being and the need for excellent customer service in order to further promote the facilities and resources accessible here on island.

Accepting the invitation ensured that on the 23rd November all members of Year 6 would be treated like a tourist for the day, in order to gain a better understanding of the hotel and tourism industry. With their passports in hand, Year 6 embarked upon a fun-filled and educational day!

Year 6’s Coral Reef Exploration with Big Blue

2As part of our TCI studies this term, Year 6 has been investigating coral reefs.  Our classroom based learning was bought to life with a field trip to snorkel on TCI’s very own amazing reef system.

We were very fortunate to have Lynne (Big Blue representative) visit our school earlier in the term, to provide us with an array of information linked to our very own coral reef here in the TCI. Lynne presented an excellent lecture explaining the formation of our reef; their importance to the overall ecology of our planet and the fascinating living creatures that can be found residing within them.

Year 6 Create Edible Animal Cells

yr-6-animal-cells-oct-2015 (2)Year 6 has been learning that all living things (animals and plants) are made of cells which are the building blocks of life.

To help us get to grips with the scientific vocabulary (complex and advanced) and to assist with our understanding, we gathered an array of candies and jelly. The candies were used to create our very own edible animal cell with the best candies illustrating a different aspect of the cell and its purpose.

We discovered that most cells are very small and that they are invisible without using a microscope. Cells are covered by a cell membrane and come in different shapes.

Soccer Champions in Every Sense!

soccer-tournament-2015What a fantastic year it’s been for soccer at Provo Primary! Our weekly Soccer Club was booming this term in preparation for the annual TCI Inter-Island School Competition. With interest high from the children, we were fortunate enough to field 3 soccer teams, an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team for the boys and a girls’ team.

The competition matches were all played over the course of a week, culminating with the finals on the last day of the tournament. After some hard fought games, great team work and sportsmanship, Provo Primary were delighted to walk away with two well-deserved trophies for the boys’ ‘A’ team and the girls’ team.

The ‘B’ team, coached by the magnificent Mr Toby, secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over The International School. They showed a tremendous display of working as a squad and sportsmanship, a promising set of players for the future!

All in all, everyone was able to walk away feeling a champion in every sense!

Have you heard Provo Primary has a school of fish?

Developing our breathing techniques.

Developing our breathing techniques.

This half term the children of Provo Primary have been taking part in a series of swimming lessons. The staff have been working hard to create a stream of lessons, which cater for all swimming experiences and abilities for children from Kindergarten right up to Year 6.  There is an ocean of talent in the pool each week!

Provo Primary’s swimming policy enables children to focus on water confidence and moving through the water, to the later stages of finely tuning swimming strokes such as: front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke and developing breathing techniques.

At the start, each year group was carefully assessed and grouped so that they could be taught based on their swimming ability and confidence. The progression so far has been immense and there is still two more weeks of swimming sessions to go!  Please take a look at the photos and get a sneak peak of the activities the children have been doing.

Further adventures of our Year 6 in the DR

yr-6-dr-trip-06-05-15 (6)Our Year 6 adventurers returned home today full of stories and tales to tell of their 5 day trip to Rancho Baiguate in the Dominican Republic.

Their trip has been action-packed with activities – hikes to waterfalls, visits to a bird sanctuary and a coffee plantation, horse riding and zip-lining, to name a few.  Handling a snake was a new experience for some. Tasting some authentic Dominican ice-cream involved some interesting flavours; including sweet potato.   Here are a few photos – I know there will be lots more to share next week!

We have missed you Year 6 and look forward to hearing your news on Monday, after a well deserved weekend’s rest and relaxation.

Thank you to our superstar teachers Mr. Jason, Mrs. Yorka and all of our amazing parent volunteers for making this trip such a memorable and fun one for everyone.  [Read more…]

Attending a Book Launch

auntie-fannie-talking-potatoes-launch-june-2015There’s an exciting new children’s book on the island, written by one of our resident pastors, Mr. Bradley Handfield.

Entitled, ‘The Adventures of Auntie Fannie, Mattie and the Talking Potatoes’, it tells of Auntie Fannie’s trip to market, where she meets a small kitten (Mattie) and buys some very special potato seeds.

The book was introduced by the author at a special ceremony on June 2nd at the Gus Lightbourne building. Many of the island schools were represented and local dignitaries, including the Minister of Education, spoke to the children about the importance of reading and the magic we can find whenever we enter the world of our imagination. Every child was given a free copy of the book and local sponsors donated copies to the schools. This was followed by some of the children entertained us with their singing.

Two of our Year 6 students were the ambassadors for our school and they did us proud. When Provo Primary was announced, they joined the author on stage to accept copies donated to our school by the Right Honourable Rufus Ewing.  Look out for the copies as they circulate around the school.  A big thank you goes to Mrs. Betty  for accompanying the students.  A children’s writer herself, she enjoyed the experience and the celebration of the magic that stories bring to the lives of children.

Yr 6 have arrived!

yr-6-trip-june-2015The Year 6 have arrived in the Dominican Republic for their week long eco-adventure, residential trip at Rancho Baiguate, Jarabacoa.

The trip links well with the topics the Year 6 have studied throughout the year and will be a wonderful opportunity for them to apply their Spanish learning to real-life situations.

Here is Mr. Jason’s first report of their adventures:

We are here! The Ranch is fantastic; terrific facilities! The kids are having a blast. A fun filled week awaits us with horse-back rides to the famous DR waterfalls, high and low ropes course, flower and coffee plantations! We completed our first ecological tour this evening and the kids were amazed by the natural beauty!

At Provo Primary, we feel that residential field trips integrate academic and social development by providing students with an opportunity to investigate and apply academic knowledge to the outside world, as well as develop their personal and social skills, through a broad range of activities away from their home environment.

Look out for further updates and photos throughout the week.

Parent guides to help you to support your child’s Maths learning.

calculation-policy-imageThese parent guides will help you to see the progression of a child’s understanding of number and calculations from the Early Years through to Year 6. They demonstrate the teaching stages of each of the 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They also include key vocabulary to support each method.
Each guide is designed to assist you with supporting your child at home with their Numeracy learning.  It is often the case that many methods and strategies taught today appear different from those previously used. All children will progress towards using the methods that many adults recognise from their own school days. We do, however, encourage all parents to support their child’s progress through the stages outlined in these parent guides, so that they gain a richer understanding of how complex calculations work. When at home, it is helpful if your child can practice the methods taught in school to ensure the strategies are reinforced effectively.

Year 6 Flowers

yr-6-flowers-may-2015-(8)Year six students have been studying the work of Van Gogh. We paid particular attention to his famous still life: Sunflowers. Using this as stimulus, the students got busy creating their own flower still life using a variety of flowers. Look closely at our photos and you will discover some very exotic ones!

Focusing on line, space, tone and shade the students sketched carefully to achieve the same style as Van Gogh, but with different flower creations. Coloured pastels were then introduced to enable different shades and tones to be created within the colouring stage. The vase was decorated and some individuals decided to use colours to enhance the background of their work.

This was quite a lengthy process and the students worked meticulously in order to produce their final version.

We hope you like them and that they inspire you to create your own Van Gogh-like masterpiece.

  • Characterisation;
  • Figurative language features.

The Great Year 6 Balloon Debate

yr-6-debate-mar-2015A balloon debate is a debate in which a number of speakers attempt to win the approval of an audience. The audience is invited to imagine that the speakers are flying in a hot-air balloon which is sinking. Everyone, bar one individual, must be thrown out in order to have one survivor.

Year 6 recently participated in their own balloon debate. The class were split into 4 groups. Competing with the other members in their group they had to speak on behalf of a famous person, author, fictional character and so on (dead or alive) in order to present their case and to convince the audience of their worth.

Year 6 Study the Human Body

yr-6-human-body-mar-2015 (7)Year 6 students have enjoyed studying the human body; which has been the main focus of our learning in science this term. They made an impressive start to this topic by relaying facts that they already knew about the human body and the questions that they wanted to explore about bodily functions as the topic progressed.

They have carried out a number of investigations such as monitoring our BPM during various activities; breathing rates during different activities and how different fluids increase the rate of tooth decay. They have been able to apply their understanding of the human body to these experiments in order to draw conclusions.

The students examined in great detail: the digestive system; the respiratory system; the circulatory system; the skeletal system and healthy lifestyles.

The students were exposed to extensive scientific vocabulary throughout this topic and worked extremely hard in gaining an increased understanding of how the main organ systems work.

Year 6 Explore Natural Disasters

yr-6-natural-disasters-jan-2015Year 6 has made an impressive start to their new topic Natural Disasters.  ‘Board blasting’ natural and man-made disasters kick started our thinking into this area.  The children were then able to define the differences between such disasters and realised that our planet can become angry at times.

Wearing our geologist hats we were able to observe the structure of the earth and examine the Tectonic Plate Theory in order to understand how natural disasters can occur.

Working in pairs the children used traditional and digital resources to capture relevant information and interesting facts on a number of natural disasters.  Please come and check out some of our information posters as you might discover something that you did not know before…
