Parent guides to help you to support your child’s Maths learning.

calculation-policy-imageThese parent guides will help you to see the progression of a child’s understanding of number and calculations from the Early Years through to Year 6. They demonstrate the teaching stages of each of the 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They also include key vocabulary to support each method.
Each guide is designed to assist you with supporting your child at home with their Numeracy learning.  It is often the case that many methods and strategies taught today appear different from those previously used. All children will progress towards using the methods that many adults recognise from their own school days. We do, however, encourage all parents to support their child’s progress through the stages outlined in these parent guides, so that they gain a richer understanding of how complex calculations work. When at home, it is helpful if your child can practice the methods taught in school to ensure the strategies are reinforced effectively.

Kindergarten set out to measure dinosaurs!

k-dinosaurs-measuring-april-2015-6Have you ever wondered how tall a tyrannosaurus rex was? Or how long a long a brachiosaurus was from nose to tail? Well, you’re in luck – Kindergarten set out to find this out!

To visualise how big these incredible creatures were, the class set about measuring string that would show the height and length of each type of dinosaur. Then we attached helium balloons to the string so that we could imagine how long the dinosaurs’ necks were. The results were incredible!

Music in the Garden with the Kindergarten band!

k-garden-music-mar-2015 (1)Music was in the air last week as the Kindergarten class were inspired to form a whole-class band by a single student’s rat-tap-tapping!

After a busy morning play filled with running, climbing and hide-and-seek, children could be heard around the garden singing our popular “How green you are?” song. Suddenly, however, their singing was accompanied by improvised percussion from one student. Then two…and, well, the rest was a perfect lesson in how infectious music can be!

Kindergarten Explore Space through Imaginary Adventures

k-space-mar-2015 (2)Our space topic may have been a small step for our Kindergartners, but they have all taken giant leaps in their learning over the past 6 weeks!

The whole class have been excited to share their knowledge of space with parents, siblings, teachers and each other. Everyone has enjoyed learning wonderful facts about space.  Our young astronauts were amazed to learn how people eat, sleep, drink, wash, brush teeth or comb their hair while in space! And understanding how spaceships can communicate with earth…well, that blew our minds!

We studied different rockets so that we could design one for ourselves. We compared different rocket shapes and designs, including comparing how different countries have built spaceships. We learned the names of various rocket parts and labelled our own designs so that we, too, could travel to space.

Kindergarten will Remember, Remember the 5th November!

k-bonfire-night-nov-2014 (11)The week following Halloween was an exciting and busy one in the Gecko Classroom! Children learned about and prepared to participate in the school’s Bonfire Night celebrations on Wednesday 5th November.

As part of our topic Why are we all so different? we have been taking all opportunities to find out about and enjoy different festivals and celebrations from around the world. Learning about the history and the present day traditions of Guy Fawkes Night led to many questions and gave us lots to explore!

Children learned about safety around a bonfire and created firework art from glitter paints. As part of our Shapes project in maths we all tried to re-create firework displays by combining colour and shape.   As the children created their work, they explained what they were imagining and thinking about.

Please click on ‘read more’ to see photos of our fireworks and Guy Fawkes masks.

Talk, Talk, Talk go the Kindergarten Storytellers

We’re all storytellers in Gecko Class now!

As part of our topic Why are we all so different? we have been thinking about the houses we live in and all the people who live there with us. As part of the project, we learned to re-tell the story of the Three Little Pigs and their very different houses.

Having spent the week learning to tell an extended version of The Three Little Pigs, we decided to capture our story on film to share with the world. I think you’ll agree, the class are doing a great job!

Kindergarten Visit our Environmental Centre on International Biodiversity Day

k-bio-diversity-day-june-2014 (1) Our latest field trip involved us exploring the beach and expanding our knowledge about the sea.  We started off by visiting the DEMA Environmental Centre, where Amy, the Environment Outreach Coordinator, shared many interesting facts about the Turks and Caicos Islands and highlighted the importance of taking care of our reefs.  Looking around the exhibits, we were thrilled to meet a real-life boa constrictor and to touch a humpback whale’s tooth.

We then headed across to The Children’s Park on our way to the beach.  A special tree planting ceremony was taking place in celebration of International Bio-diversity Day.  The Honorable Premier, Rufus Ewing,  asked us to help him to plant some lignum vitae trees.  He then invited us to pose with him in a photograph that would be featured in the Canadian magazine, PIE.  We felt like the paparazzi were all around us as cameras clicked and flashed.  What a memorable trip!

A Beautiful Spring Bonnet Parade

spring-bonnets-april-2014 (2)A spectacularly colourful display of spring bonnets paraded through the school today, donned by our younger students.  The bonnets were thoroughly enjoyed by onlooking students, teachers and parents, who clapped and cheered to show their praise for the wonderfully creative designs. Well done to all the families for working on these together and do enjoy looking at the photos.  It was so lovely to see such individuality and such a range of ideas on how to depict the theme of spring and Easter egg time.

The parade was followed by our annual PTA Easter Egg Hunt – an egg-citing event that by no egg-aaggeration is a much look forward to by all the students throughout the school.  Thank you to Haley and all of the PTA volunteers for making this happen.

Happy Easter break holiday everyone and we look forward to seeing you all back at Provo Primary on Monday 28th April.

Young Athletes Spring into Action in their Sports Day

pps-sports-day-april-2014Today was Sports Day for all the children from 2 through to 7 years old.  Many families came along to support the children and the event was a healthy success with beating hearts, puffed cheeks and smiles all round!

Watching all of the events was amazing opportunity to see first hand the growth and development of children’s motor skills during these short years.  Gross motor skills are physical abilities or capacities such as running, jumping, hopping, turning, skipping, throwing, balancing and dancing that  involve the use of large bodily movements.

The event allowed the children to demonstrate developmentally appropriate skills that they have been learning and practising during their PE (Physical Education) activities.  Teachers and children explained to the audience the techniques involved in the various activities before the children showcased their skills in team and individual activities.

I hope you enjoy looking back at the photos – the concentration, determination and enjoyment on the children’s faces and through their body action is a delight to see!

Kindergarteners explore partitioning 10 with Cuisenaire Rods

k-cuisenaire-march-2014 (2)What does “active learning” look like for mathematics? When the Kindergarteners play and explore the concept of number with the Cuisenaire rods they learn to partition the number ten in many different ways…one and nine, two and eight, three and seven. What a wonderful example of how children critically think about number in a concrete and hands on way!…In the name of “play” we support children’s learning in rich and meaningful activities.

Querido Zoo leido y actualizado por Kindergarten

In Kindergarten Spanish we have been building on the children’s learning about animals and animal classification using the popular book ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell. First we needed to hear the story in Spanish, picking out and learning the names for all the animals the book talks about. Then we needed to look at the adjectives used to describe each of the zoo animals, and why they wouldn’t make suitable pets. I’m sure you’ll agree that the animal chosen at the end of the book would make a much better pet than a lion, a snake or a camel!

The children then put their newly learned vocabulary, as well as some excellent animal impressions, into a re-telling of the original story in Spanish. Watch our video to see what a wonderful job they did!

Kindergarten’s Visit to the Vets

k-vets-jan-2014-1The Kindergarteners visited the Turks and Caicos Vet Association and offered homemade doggie treats to the TCSPCA as part of their exploration of domesticated animals and how to care for pets.  Ms. Peggy answered many of the children’s questions and they were able to learn very specific ways that veterinarians care for animals. What an exciting adventure in learning!

Welcome to the Provo Primary Kindergarten Animal Hospital!

k-animal-hospital-jan-2014Our waiting area includes clipboards for signing in our favourite stuffed animal pets who unfortunately have issues that need our attention.  We have created and labeled their cages and are learning to care for them properly.  As we learn more about our animal patients, we also actively learn skills in problem solving, collaboration,  literacy, and numeracy. We are planning a trip to the Vets soon to further investigate how to care for our furry and feathered friends.

Kindergarten retell ‘The Three Little Pigs’

k-3-pigs-nov-2013-(2)-1The Kindergarteners thoroughly enjoyed acting out ‘The Three Little Pigs’, retelling the tale with puppets and by performing it  in front of their peer audience.

They then retold the story in their journals adding detailed drawings and a few words of their choice.

What a wonderful example of emergent literacy!
