This day culminates the track and field sessions where children have improved their skills in Sprinting, Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Discus, Shot Put, and Relay. Out of these events, students have made their choice of three events to take part in on Sports Day.

Sports Day will end with a final relay. There will be four teams for relay made of one person from each year-group. It will be an event not to miss! Please come and join us at the National Stadium from 8:45 – 10:15am.

‘Turtley’ Triumphant Times Yr 5 Turtle Class

Y5 kicked off the year with all sorts of work based on their class animal, the sea turtle. For example, in Art and design, they created an impressive, large collaborative drawing of a sea turtle which they all agreed would have been too difficult to do alone. So how did they do it I hear you ask.
Well, a small picture of a turtle was divided into 16 parts. Each child was given one of those small parts to try to draw accurately but it wasn’t that simple as the piece of paper they were drawing on was a lot bigger than the drawing they’d been given so they had to scale it up. They also had to liaise with other children to make sure their part matched the other parts of the turtle and joined in the correct places. They did brilliantly. In fact, you might say it was a turtle success!

Today is the U.N. International Day of the Girl Child

It’s International Day of the Girl Child- a day to bring attention to girls’ rights and the challenges that they face around the world.

2019 Theme — GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable

“We need to uphold the equal rights, voices and influence of girls in our families, communities and nations. Girls can be powerful agents of change, and nothing should keep them from participating fully in all areas of life.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres

International Day of the Girl Child was set up by the United Nations – or UN as it’s often called – a worldwide organisation that brings countries together to talk about world issues. Find out more about this day here.

Germination Animation in Year 8!

Year 8 recently began some tricky learning about the processes of seed germination. How could we possibly tell a cotyledon from a plumule?! Or remember which is the hypocotyl and which is the epicotyl? We looked at seed diagrams at first, but they didn’t really help us to appreciate or imagine how the process of germination really works.

Time to get our hands dirty in biology!

Year 8 have spent the last week learning from a range of scientific activities to truly understand the complexity of this process. [Read more…]

Dive and delve deep into our Year 1 Dolphin Classroom

Our Year 1 Dolphins have been ‘dolphin dancing’ their way through the beginning of term learning all about their class animal through story, dance and crafty activities.

Our buzz word has been all things ‘Brains’ where we have been learning about mindfulness in our brains and bodies. Ask any of our Year 1s about the benefits of using our Pre Frontal Cortex and R.A.S. system and they will be sure to keep you informed.

Food For Thoughts 4th Annual Sunday Brunch

Enjoy a delicious meal in a delightful setting while supporting a worthy cause.  Food for Thought is a charity that provides breakfast to hundreds of children in Turks & Caicos.

Sunday 2oth October 2019 @ Mango Reef (click on the poster for details)

Last years, the charity’s third annual Sunday Brunch fundraiser raised over $17,000 for its breakfast and food bank programmes.

Jeanne and Karen Savory (Food for Thought Co-Founders) continue to express their gratitude for all the community’s support for this event, and in general. “Providing breakfast to a few hundred students may not seem like much, but to some of the students it is really an important addition to their day. Teachers very quickly report improved attention and attendance.  We could not do it without the amazing support from the community. We are very grateful to everyone who contributes, in so many ways, to the achievements of this charity.”

World Teacher Day 2019

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” – Pablo Picasso

Every single day, we can be inspired by the people who do extraordinary things to improve the world. Their everyday acts and sacrifices are truly superhuman, and in no profession is this more evident than teaching.

So this World Teachers Day join us in celebrating five superpowers of teachers. Here are some of the things teachers do that, all told, have an impact on par with superheroes.

Year 6 have the Vision to See… Believe… and Achieve!

Over the past few weeks in Year 6, we have been creating our own vision boards. A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of on which you display images and words that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.
Here are a few statements from the children in Iguana class about their understanding of visions boards and their purpose:

  • Vision boards display what we hope to achieve in our futures.
  • Our goals and targets are colourfully illustrated on paper or as 3D models.
  • We all hope that one day, in the near or far future, we will be able to think how much we have achieved and how our vision boards helped us.
  • The reason why we created vision boards is to show what we envision ourselves achieving.
  • We made them to showcase what we are going to accomplish.

In Year 6, we really hope that these vision boards allow us to take our ideas and goals to the next level by seeing exactly what it is that we want to achieve.

Flamingos go free in fridge/freezer land!

The Y4s Flamingo Class had an amazing trip to the IGA on Wednesday to learn all about how the supermarket keeps food fresh.
They had an extensive tour of the various  departments including food preparation, weighing, pricing and storage.
They learnt how fridges, freezers and ovens keep food at particular temperatures and they loved experiencing ‘Alaska’ (the minus 35 degree freezer)!

In class on Friday, the Flamingos each wrote a ‘thank you’ letter to Mr Burns for arranging the visit.

Who knew that something so simple could become such a superpower?

Each year, watching this inspirational video resonates powerfully with our students.

Our Year 2 class have just watched it for the first time and it has been a really effective way to help them understand what mindfulness means. The video has become the catalyst for Personal, Health, Social and Economic Education (PHSE) discussions and helped the children begin to understand and manage their emotions as they learn and play together. When they remember to ‘just breathe’, they can find the clarity to calmly solve problems, resolve conflicts, find compromise and build resilience.

Take me Tuesday and Throwback Thursday… Celebrating TCI Heritage

Throughout National Heritage Month, we will be celebrating on Social Media each Tuesday and Thursday with a host of our heritage posts that we have published over the years, along with some of our favourite videos and songs.

Enjoy sharing this celebration with us, looking out for posts reminiscing times past and highlighting the amazing heritage of our islands…

It’s National Heritage Month here in the TCI – 2019

The Ministry of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services invites you to join us in celebrating encouraging  friends and neighbours to come out and be a part of the month –long activities around the island. Click on the image left to see what’s happening.

National Heritage Month is a time in which we wholeheartedly observe and celebrate the rich cultural history of our country. It is through our celebrations that we recognise the work done by our forefathers, and the rich legacies they have left for our enjoyment.

As we celebrate, we ask that we each reflect on our level of patriotism to this beautiful country; the role each citizen must play in making this a safer place in which to live, and the steps that are to be taken to make the TCI a more unified country.

Look out for further details this week on our National Heritage Celebration Assembly on the afternoon of Friday 11th October – time to be decided.

Everyone is invited to join us as our children honour our National Song, tales and dances.  We hope you’ll be able to join us for the celebrations!

As always, do let us know if you are willing to come in and share a heritage related activity with the children during this month.

Big Ted and Flamingo went to Sea…

Big Ted is so excited about you joining him for the ‘Global Cardboard Challenge’ tomorrow. In fact he and Flamingo couldn’t wait and got creative with some amazing friends!

Big Ted and the Flamingo went to sea, in a beautiful cardboard boat,

They took some honey, and plenty of money, wrapped up in a five-dollar note.

Big Ted looked up to the stars above, and sang to a small guitar,

“O lovely Flamingo! O Flamingo my love,

What a beautiful Flamingo you are, you are, you are!

What a beautiful Flamingo you are!”

Adapted from the poem ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’ by Edward Lear.

Our Global Cardboard Challenge Day is 2 sleeps away!

Inspired by Caine, we are getting ready for an afternoon of good old fashioned – no technology – imaginative, family fun!  3-6Pm – Sunday 29th Sept.

9-year-old Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. The entire summer went by, and he never had a single customer. But Caine didn’t give up. Then, on the last day of summer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick walked in by chance to buy an auto part for his car. Caine asked Nirvan to play, and, well,  Caine’s Arcade 2 to see what happened next…

Looking for National Youth Day activities to join in with tomorrow… ?

Why not start your National Youth Day celebrations at the Edward C. Garland Youth Centre ‘Youth Fun Day’!  With a bounce house, arts and crafts, face painting, games and more, it’s set to be a fun event to go to between 10am and  4pm.

After this, Provo Primary and Middle School families are welcome to join Mrs. Laranda on the National Youth Day Parade March. Starting at 4pm, the parade leads from CIBC Bank to the Gustuvus Lightbourne Sports Complex, Downtown.

A huge welcome to our new School Council – 2019-2020

Congratulations to our new Year 3 – 6 School Councillors for being chosen to represent your classes and your school. This time round we have 3 students from each class to share the responsibilities over the year. Thank you to everyone who put themselves forward for election. Once again, all the teachers commented on how well you represented yourselves, it takes courage as well as enthusiasm to present yourselves to the whole class – keeping that amygdala in check. Well done to all of you!

We have already been busy talking about adjusting the playtime schedule as well as revisiting and reminding us all about continuing to use metal and reusable cutlery and NO to STRAWS! Are we ready to reduce all single-use plastic?!

The first early ‘Dress Down Day’ was a success. You all donated a total of $335 – an outstanding amount of money that will all be donated to assist the people of the Bahamas who suffered during Hurricane Dorian. [Read more…]
