Welcome Back…

Welcome back to all of our students! We have been a little quiet on the social media front but now that we are settled back on site, with an exciting new half term ahead, we will be sharing more of our school life with you here.
A big thank you to all of our parents for your help during last half term’s online learning. We know it wasn’t easy but rest assured that there were some huge achievements during that period, with students developing a range of IT skills, as well as important life skills such as resilience, problem solving and independence.
We have lots of hands-on projects for students to enjoy this next half term, and we know they will be happy to be back with their friends in the classroom and in the playground!

Patience, Perseverance & Positivity: The Middle School Dude Perfect Challenge

Returning to school after the past year of online learning created talking points for all students and teachers. What was the year of online learning like for you? What were some of the challenges? How were these challenges overcome and how do you feel now that we have returned to the classroom?

Through all of these discussions, there were many common themes. One of these was the importance of Patience, Perseverance & Positivity in all that we do. All students experienced the importance of these skills in different aspects of their home learning experience.

But how do we develop these skills?

All classes in Provo Middle School were challenged to complete a Dude Perfect Trick Shot in order to explore this problem! Dude Perfect set an amazing example for Patience, Perseverance & Positivity through their incredible trick shot videos.

So, how hard could it be to create some of our own?!

Well…very, as it turns out! Some of these videos took countless attempts to complete and endless hours to capture.

Here is what some of our students had to say about the experience:

“It was so frustrating! Even the easy shot took me ages!”

I needed practice, patience, perseverance and a need to succeed. I also needed to be optimistic, motivated committed and focused.”

“I learned that sometimes we give up too easily.”

“Ignore negative comments!”

“We can learn that some things just take more time than others.”

“If you put in nothing in then the outcome will be nothing.”

“The problems we overcame in the challenge show similarity to real life.”

“The feeling of success is great, no matter how many times you failed.”

Kind words of thanks from our TCI Education Department.

Dear Principals,

As we come to the official close of the 2020 – 2021 Academic year, I would like to use this opportunity to thank you for the great support given. It was indeed another difficult year as we continue to deal with the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic and online education issues, however we have persevered.

To those of you may be retiring or moving on to other ventures, on behalf of the Education Department I express profound thanks for your contribution to the education of our youths. Your selfless service will be long remembered by those lives who you positively impacted.

As we conclude the year and commence plans for the new, let us continue our resolve to improve in our field and implement new innovations that will help our students to be critical thinkers equipped to make positive contributions to  the development of our beautiful by nature, the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Do enjoy your summer holidays and return refreshed and excited to begin the new school year.

God Bless! Regards,

David Bowen [Education Officer / Turks and Caicos Education Department]

Santa delivers a virtual goodwill message

It’s tradition here for Santa to arrive on the last morning of school on fire truck laden with book gifts for all. Mindful of COVID-19 this year, Santa recorded a special message for us all that was shared virtually to all our students learning at home and at school.

It wasn’t quite the same, but the excitement of seeing our familiar Santa, hearing his voice and sharing blessings met with the same enjoyment as ever.

We certainly have lots to be grateful for this year and thank Santa for finding a creative way to share his presence!

Memories of our past Santa visits…

Y1 Celebrations

This half term in Y1 we have started our new topic “Celebrations”. This topic will help our Y1’s to have a solid understanding of the meaning, characteristics and purpose of different celebrations around the world.

Last week, we learned about the Hindu celebration of light “Diwali”. Y1’s explored the story of “Rama and Sita” and put on a puppet show to display their retelling skills and to show off their inventiveness. There were many fantastic home- made and hand – made lollipop stick puppets to represent each character from the story!

Year 5 Art: “Girl with the wind in her hair”

Year 5 have completed a half term’s work on cartoon drawing with a grand finale called “Girl with the wind in her hair”. They have been practising drawing cartoon characters with different facial expressions, animals, robots, aliens and pets. Over the past few weeks, the children have grown in confidence both in what skill they have practised but also in inventing their own versions. Today, they have drawn on experience from previous lessons to produce this classic Pete McKee image of a girl on a beach. The lesson was a slight departure from their cartoon drawing as they challenged themselves to a piece of graphic fine art. Below is a photo of just a few of the wonderful artworks from the children, proudly displayed in our temporary classroom.

Today is Global Handwashing Day

TCIG Press Release:

Each year on October 15th, Global Handwashing Day highlights the importance of handwashing with soap and water at home, in the community and around the world. It is a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap and “running” water as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

The theme for Global Hand Washing Day 2020 is “HAND HYGIENE FOR ALL,”an important reminder that we must include everyone when addressing handwashing irregularities. Inequalities in handwashing facilities and effective handwashing promotion programs, can put individuals at higher risk for diseases that impact their health, education, and economic outcomes.

Celebrating World Teacher Day 2020 with Tea and Cake!

“Teachers: Leading in crisis, re-imagining the future”

Today, Monday 5th October is World Teacher’s Day!

Amid a global pandemic, our teachers have continued to work tirelessly since March to support their students, families and each other through the challenges of online learning and as they adapt to Covid-19 safety guidelines in our daycare classrooms.

As a Senior Leadership wanted to find a way to thank all members of staff for their hard work, resourcefulness and optimism in finding new ways to build successful learning communities. We truly appreciate their efforts over the first month of school.

Over the week, we are planning small gatherings of socially-distanced ‘tea and cake breaks’. A time to appreciate our home learning teachers, along with our Daycare, cleaning and maintenance staff who are working directly with children during this time.

Year 1 Greater than, less than equal to…

These Year 1’s are confidently demonstrating how they are able to compare numbers using the < > and = symbols. Well done home-learners!

Year 2 take look inside the body…

Year 2 have been learning about the human body.

They chose different ways to share their understanding of what they know to be inside their body. Their use of labels is really helpful.

The children watched different versions of the skeleton dance and expressed which they preferred. They made their own videos too. These were shared on their class Seesaw blog so that children across the school could enjoy them.

Making x-ray skeletons with paper straws was tricky. Look for the details they have included…. can you find a skull, a femur, a tibia and fibia, a pelvis, a rib, a radius and ulna?

Daycare Staycation in Letterland

Our Daycare children were all excited to return to the classroom after enjoying a staycation at home.

As the children entered the room, they were amazed to see the some of the Letterland characters on the wall.  Their curiosity, just like Clever Cat in Letterland, led them to explore all the classroom centers calling out the names and sounds of the letters.

So, our journey began, hanging out in Letterland and discovering the wonders of letters and sounds.

Over these first few weeks, the children have revisited some of the sounds they are already familiar with and explored those that are new.

The children have enjoyed making Letterland crafts, listening to the stories of each character, chanting the sounds they make, acting out the actions, making marks that represent each sound, writing in sand, using water to make prints on concrete, tracing with water over chalk, using dot art and tracing with markers, etc.

Let Year 3 tell you all there is to know about conch (Konk)

The sounding the conch shell horn (blowing the conch) is a tradition here in the TCI used to call attention to an important event or celebration.

A perfect way to draw your attention to our amazing Year 3 Conch class who have made information posters about their class namesake.

I imagine they really had to ‘conch-centrate’ while making these!🤣

How have the children’s use of text colour and size, artwork, titles, heading, questions, text boxes, bullet points and other features drawn you in and made it easy to find out more about these amazing seashell animals?

There is certainly a lot to learn about conch. Well done, Year 3. 🐚
