Throughout the term Year 6 students have engaged with rainforest study. This topic has been taught thematically across the differing areas of learning. This approach to teaching and learning has enabled the students to build upon their knowledge and understanding of rainforests, within other curriculum capacities other than geography and science.<\/p>\n

Getting stuck into the topic the students soon realized that rainforests are an important aspect of the earth\u2019s ecology. Not only are they essential for the processes of the water cycle, but they contribute to supplying our planet with a vital percentage of our oxygen.<\/p>\n

The students developed their map work skills using National Geographic Map Maker Online to pinpoint the major rainforests of the world.<\/p>\n

They built upon their reasoning and thinking skills by comparing and contrasting temperate and tropical rainforests.<\/p>\n

They researched different vertebrate and invertebrate animals found within the different layers of the rainforest. Gathering their information into relevant sections they presented their information to the rest of the class using Prezi on the tablets (advanced PowerPoint like app).<\/p>\n

We examined food chains and food webs and considered how energy is transferred from one living organism to the other.<\/p>\n

Finally, observing rainforest people and their homes Year 6 have planned and designed their very own rainforest home. These will be built using natural resources and portray how other cultures differ from our own.<\/p>\n
