If a Picture Paints a Thousand Words . . .

We in Grade 6 are lucky to have Mrs Krys working with us every week. Last term, she covered the ‘basics’ of Adobe Photoshop and this term, we are learning how to alter and adapt the photos we take to improve them.

Two weeks ago, Mrs Krys let Grade 6 use one of her cameras to take photos of each other in the school grounds – they chose their own setting and explained to their ‘models’ what they wanted (with some ideas from Mrs Krys).

Although these photos are good, Mrs Krys then showed us how they could be even better. She had taken some photos on her camera at the same time as the children and she had used Photoshop to improve them. Click on the link to see the difference! The photos need to be viewed in pairs so as you can see the ‘before and after’ effect.

Before & After

Grade 6 then had a go. We adjusted levels and saturation; we used filters and layers; we used curves and brushes. Have a look at our ‘before and after’ images. Please let us know what you think.

Mrs Krys also showed us how to use masks and layers to combine the best parts of 2 photos into 1 super photo.

We have looked at some websites to see ‘before and after’ versions of photos of celebrities. Try the link below to see for yourself – it shows that beauty sometimes needs some assistance from the artistic hands of the photographer. (Click on ‘portfolio’ twice, then agree to their terms to find the ‘before and after’ images.) The other link is to the Dove website where their ‘Evolution’ ad is available to show you just how unnatural so-called beauty really is!

Thank you, Mrs Krys!
