What a lovely painting!

This year grade 2 have been looking at a range of different artists, this week we have been painting pictures in the style of Claude Monet. The children looked at a selection of paintings by Monet and we chose the ‘Lily pond at Giverny’ to practice our painting skills.

Last term the children looked at art work by Modigliani, Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso. The children painted portraits in the style of Picasso, there is a display of these in the computer room.

This term the children have also been talking about why they like or don’t like a particular painting. I have also been encouraging the children to look at a painting and talk about what they can see. I found that this allowed the children to use a range of vocabulary, it also allowed them to express their opinion and talk to each other about what they thought. These skills can be transferred into their story writing, written arguments and generally a great speaking and listening opportunity.

The message I have tried to get across is that everyone is different and therefore their reaction to a piece of art can be very different, there are no right and wrong answers! One person might say a painting is awful and another may think it is the best piece of art they have ever seen! Click on the link below and take a look at some of the pictures the children have been looking at, you make your own judgment!

This is a link to a website I thought was rather interesting, something to store for future reference!

There is another great website which is fun to go on with your kids, for those who didn’t try it when I gave it out last time I thought it was worth another mention! You too can paint like Jackson Pollock, just move the mouse!

Lovely art work indeed! You really seem to have captured the way that Monet used the brush to dab on the paint and blend the colours.

I really like Monet’s art and used to collect postcards of his work when I was younger. I had a big album full. I remember seeing his paintings in an art gallery for the first time and being amazed at how big they were – some were the size of our classroom walls and the paint was so thick that it stuck out from the canvas at least 5cm! I particularly liked how Monet painted the same scene many times, at different times of the day, when the light was different.

I also really like the artist Hundertwasser and have a collection of his postcards, too. I like the boats on the water in the painting you looked at. They make me think of smiling lips. Perhaps he wanted to show how he loved being on the water?

I found a good site on Hundertwasser for children – It’s in German, but the link below will take you to a painting and puzzle section that you might enjoy.

I am not so keen on the painting by Jackson Pollock. I find that it is too busy and messy. I like bright colours and I think that I prefer art in which the colours flow and blend together gently.  This makes me feel calm and relaxed. Maybe that is why I like Monet’s paintings more.
Art is really fun to talk about and everyone has their own ideas of what they like and don’t like. Like Mrs. Sara says, the great thing about art is that there is no right and wrong – it’s up to you. I wonder what you all thought of our Grade 3 ‘Pop Art’?

    Phwoar!

The play of light and shade, a dream?, as the sun moves through the day. The dappled river, a rippling sky?Do impressions ever ever stay?

    Lovely work.

I enjoyed playing around with the Jackson Pollock website also.

(It was really easy, I just had to move my paw over the mouse).

We can see a red car too, J — but couldn’t find the robot. We aren’t really keen on that painting. It’s not something we’d like hanging in our livingroom. We do like all of the Monet-style artwork though. Everyone has done them beautifully.

Congratulations on your two awards, J. Wow!!! You’ve really been working hard. We are very, very proud of you…

JH Looks like you and and your friends enjoy art. The pictures are great. Keep up the good work
