Today, Grades 2 and 3 visited the Environmental Centre in The Bight. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Brian Riggs, the curator, who showed us around the displays and talked to us about the different habitats that our animals and plants share with us. He also spoke to us about ways in which we can help to protect the environment.

Here are some of the comments that the children made:

“I really enjoyed looking at the exhibit. My favourite parts were the fake coral reef display and the part where you got to touch the buttons, that was really cool.

Thank you for teaching us about how we have 7 different habitats here in our islands.

It was really fun to press the buttons and watch the islands light up.

I learnt lots of new things about our environment. It’s important to learn how we can help look after it.

The turtle skull and whale bone was interesting to see.

I enjoyed listening to what Mr. Brian was saying about the Turks and Caicos Islands. I drew a picture of a flamingo. It was fun.

Thank you Mr. Brian for letting use have a nice look at the Environmental Centre. It was wicked awesome.

The coral reef display was beautiful. I liked that we got to draw pictures of things we saw.

It was sad to hear that the Caribbean Pine, our national tree, is being attacked by beetles. I hope we can help to save it.”

The exhibition centre was opened earlier this year on Earth Day, 21st April 2007. It showcases displays of the Turks and Caicos Islands’ rich flora and fauna, the different types of habitats present and the entirety of the country’s luscious environment. It also displays current issues relating to preservation and sustainability.

We strongly recommend that you take a family visit there and learn more about our local environment. We give it 10 out of 10 for having fun while you learn.

There’s also a cute baby turtles colouring sheet to print out and colour.
