The children looked at a selection of paintings by Monet and we chose the ‘Lily pond at Giverny’ to practice our painting skills.

Click here to see some of the pictures the children have painted.
Last term the children looked at art work by Modigliani, Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso. The children painted portraits in the style of Picasso, there is a display of these in the computer room.

This term the children have also been talking about why they like or don’t like a particular painting. I have also been encouraging the children to look at a painting and talk about what they can see. I found that this allowed the children to use a range of vocabulary, it also allowed them to express their opinion and talk to each other about what they thought. These skills can be transferred into their story writing, written arguments and generally a great speaking and listening opportunity.

The message I have tried to get across is that everyone is different and therefore their reaction to a piece of art can be very different, there are no right and wrong answers! One person might say a painting is awful and another may think it is the best piece of art they have ever seen!
