On Tuesday morning we had a special visit from some musicians down on island for the Amanyara Music Festival.\u00a0 The children from Year 3-7 were involved in a mini workshop conducted (pardon the pun!) by 6 professional musicians.\u00a0 The instruments we heard and learnt more about were the basoon, clarinet, double bass, cello, viola, and violins.\u00a0 The theme of the workshop was “An Introduction to Cuban Music” and we learnt about different styles of Cuban music, how it sounds, where it comes from and how it has influenced other styles of music.\u00a0 We also learnt about the Cuban sound “SON”, “RUMBA” and the “CLAVE” rhythm which holds the rhthym together in Afro-Cuban music.<\/p>\n

At the end the musicians also played Michael Jackson music for us.\u00a0 Read on to watch a movie clip of this and see if you can recognise which song it is.<\/p>\n

Two of the Musicians, Larisa and Igor,\u00a0 had been to our school before.\u00a0 They were really happy to be visiting the Turks and Caicos, and our school again.\u00a0 We heard moving original compositions from “Sweet Plantain” The String Quartet, Libertango by Astor Piazzolla (Mrs. Shara really enjoyed this one!).\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Michael Jackson music was really amazing and I think, although not Cuban, this was everyone’s most favourite part!<\/p>\n

We want to thank Larisa, Igor, Scott and “Sweet Plantian” for coming to our school and sharing with us such wonderful music. We would also like to thank the Amanyara Hotel for organising this workshop and for scheduling us into their very busy week.<\/p>\n
