{"id":3040,"date":"2010-01-26T22:50:37","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T03:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/?p=3040"},"modified":"2010-01-26T22:50:37","modified_gmt":"2010-01-27T03:50:37","slug":"different-ways-of-making-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/provolearning.com\/blog\/year-1\/different-ways-of-making-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Different Ways of Making 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3041\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy-26-01-10.jpg?resize=446%2C535\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"535\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Year one demonstrated some amazing problem solving skills in their Numeracy class today.\u00a0 Games and challenges involved them finding different ways of making 7.\u00a0 They used a variety of addition and subtraction strategies, lots of mathematical vocabulary and were encouraged to record their findings in their own individual way.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy1-26-01-10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3042 alignleft\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 10px;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy1-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy1-26-01-10.jpg?resize=200%2C160\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"160\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some children did an activity that involved making candy cookies for a King who loved the number 7.\u00a0 Using 7 Multilink cubes to be the candy pieces, the children explored ways of connecting them to make different shaped cookies.\u00a0 Each time they made a new shape they recorded them on squared paper.\u00a0 The children each made lots different shapes.\u00a0 I wonder how many are possible in total?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy6-26-01-10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3046\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy6-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy6-26-01-10.jpg?resize=460%2C303\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"303\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other children played a game, in pairs, that used 7 pennies, 2 cups and a plate.\u00a0 The 7 pennies were put on the plate. Each child took turns to close their eyes as the other took some pennies off the plate and put them into their cup.\u00a0 Using the information of how many coins they had in their cup, added to those on the plate, they had to work out how many their partner must have in their cup.\u00a0 This was a challenging game and the children used a variety of strategies to figure the answer out.\u00a0 Some counted on in their heads, others used a whiteboard to draw a visual representation.\u00a0 Here are a few of examples of the children at work:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy2-26-01-10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3043\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy2-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy2-26-01-10.jpg?resize=200%2C179\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"179\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy3-26-01-10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3044\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy3-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy3-26-01-10.jpg?resize=200%2C231\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"231\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy4-26-01-10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3045\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"yr1-numeracy4-26-01-10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.provoprimaryblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/yr1-numeracy4-26-01-10.jpg?resize=158%2C231\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"231\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The children are also learning, by heart, the number pairs that make up a number.
