\"\"<\/a>Our Year 7<\/span> students have been <\/span>doing some exciting <\/span>experimenting <\/span>with elements in their Science l<\/span>essons. <\/span>In addition to testing how metals react when heated, the students have acquired some important new <\/span>Middle School <\/span>Science skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to carry out their experiments with safety and accuracy, the students firs<\/span>t needed to learn <\/span>how to use a Bunsen burner <\/span>and demonstrate their ability to use one <\/span>safely. <\/span>After receiving their Bunsen burner licences, the students then<\/span> worked on how to <\/span>identify different elemental metals according to their properties.<\/span> Although many metals look the same, their<\/span> properties are very different.\u00a0 It was, therefore<\/span>,<\/span> essential that the students were able to identify the correct element<\/span> they needed<\/span> for their experiments. <\/span>Finally the students nee<\/span>ded to ensure they observed the <\/span>reactions accurately<\/span>,<\/span> and recorded their observations correctly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

With new skills and knowledge under their belts, the students went forth to discover the exciting <\/span>world of elemental metals.\u00a0 <\/span>Magnesium wowed them with its bright glow as it was heated; iron filings created firework-like spa<\/span>rks; copper burned with a<\/span> green glow and aluminum melted into liquid!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once they\u2019d discovered how differently the metals all behaved under identical conditions, it was time to take a closer look at the atomic structure of different elements. This helped the students to understand how different the building blocks of each element are. Creating models of the atoms of various elements really helped the students to recognise and understand <\/span>how each<\/span> element<\/span> is fundamentally different<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have really enjoyed our hands-on Chemistry learning in Year 7 and we\u2019re looking forward to what\u2019s next!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
