\"yr-5-sept-2013<\/a>As we start a new school year, Year 5 have been getting their teeth into a brand new topic – Space, Segregation, the final frontier!\u00a0 This involves a focus on Space exploration starting from the 1960s moon landing.\u00a0 As we are looking at this period, we are also exploring what else was happening at that time with a particular focus on Martin Luther King and the effects of segregation.<\/p>\n

We started by looking at what we wanted to find out about space, asking all sorts of exciting questions. Then we decided to answer one of the most pressing questions…just how far away is the Sun and what size is it in comparison to us here on Earth?\u00a0 After some fun out on our grass pitch and some hard work with compasses we realised the sun is huuuuuge! And a long, long way from the Earth – about 93 million miles away, phew!<\/p>\n

As part of our work on segregation we warmed up by studying some pictures on different inventions and technology that were around in the 50\u2019s and 60\u2019s. There were some interesting finds including jukeboxes, Elvis Presley and Coca-Cola in glass bottles!<\/p>\n

Now we can\u2019t wait to learn more about it all!<\/p>\n
