\"k-letterland-april-2013<\/a>This term\u2019s focus on Letterland has really allowed the children in the Kindergarten class a chance to interact with the Letterland characters, consolidating initial sound knowledge and learning all the fun Letterland stories which help to explain why letters make certain sounds when standing together in a word.
\nDid you know for example, that when Sammy Snake stands next to Harry Hat Man in a word, Harry turns around to Sammy and tell him to SH\u2026. He hates noise and Sammy makes so much noise hissing around all over Letterland. When Clever Cat stands next to Harry, his hairy hat tickles her nose and instead of saying her usual \u201cC\u201d sound, she sneezes, making a little \u201cCh\u201d sound.<\/p>\n

As part of our morning routine, we imagine that we are going to board the Letterland train to visit this land of letter adventure. \u00a0 Waiting for the train to arrive,\u00a0 the children choose a Letterland character hat and come on the carpet for quiet book browsing, where they look for their character letter in the books.\u00a0 During circle time, we use our hats to use to brainstorm different words that start with our character\u2019s name. For example, for Oscar Orange, we might say oranges, octopus, outside or even October!\u00a0 The hats are also great for making and spelling words.\u00a0 We can make real words and nonsense words too!<\/p>\n

As the train whistle blows and the main part of our Literacy lesson starts, we all get aboard the Letterland train for a story about a character and various hands on activities that help reinforce phonics, such as rhyming words, interactive whiteboard activities, and sounding out and printing word family words, like \u2013at,- ag,- in, and many more.<\/p>\n
