The National Costume of the Turks and Caicos was designed by our Director of Culture, Mr. David Bowen. As a part of our Design Technology this term, the Grade 3s have been busy designing their own Turks and Caicos National Costume for children.<\/p>\n

Our National Costume was designed to represent the simple lifestyles of the ancestors of the people of the Turks and Caicos. It uses a colour scheme to represent the country’s natural beauty and the individual features of the islands. Click here to learn more about our national costume <\/a>and its colour scheme.
\nOur national costume is worn at cultural events, and the Grade 3s decided that it would be a good idea to design a costume especially for children to wear. See a slideshow of our designs and listen to our local music – ripsaw or rake and scrape. <\/a><\/p>\n

The children then each wrote letters to Mr. Bowen, trying to persuade him to choose their designs for a future national costume for children. Click on our designs below to read our letters. Which costume would you choose?<\/p>\n

The Grade 3s have also been learning about the Lucayans, the first group of people to settle on the Turks and Caicos Islands. They each made information posters from notes they had made from their research. Click on the posters to take a closer learn more about these early settlers.<\/p>\n
