Yr 6/7: Creative Thinking through Movement

Mrs. Shara presented a creative challenge in Gym class as part of our Thinking Skills Theme Week.  The children were given a famous quote and were asked to imaginatively interpret the essence and meaning of these through movement.  Forming small groups of 3, they discussed their ideas and began exploring the concepts.  At the end, they performed their creative pieces to their classmates, who tried to guess what the quote was about.

Here are a few examples of the quotes:

‘Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished’ – Lao Tzu;

‘Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood‘ – Marie Curie;

”The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be only the beginning’ – Ivy Baker Priest.

‘To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting‘ – E E Cummings

How do you think you would describe these quotes through movement?

Here are some photos of the children’s interpretations and performances:

It was truly impressive to see how the children tackled this challenge and portrayed these philosophical quotes through this medium.  It wasn’t easy and the children did really well, their classmates clearly able to grasp and understand the underlying messages they were trying to communicate.  Well done, everyone. You worked hard with this and your performances were enjoyable to see.
