Year 4 avoid the Monday Blues with Big Blue Unlimited!

yr-4-big-blue-june-2015 (16)Last week Year 4 were extremely fortunate to have a TCI kayaking and snorkeling field trip in association with Big Blue Unlimited. This was to coincide with their topic work this term. We have been immersing ourselves in the wonders of the Turks and Caicos Islands and all the amazing habitats and creatures with which we are blessed . We’ve studied how different living organisms work together in our beautiful mangroves and coral reefs. We have also looked at how  these ecosystems have been affected by our society over the years and how we can ensure that we preserve them.

Led by our Big Blue guides, we were so lucky to spend a whole morning kayaking to Iguana Island where we learned about the importance of sustaining such a wonderful nature reserve. We then kayaked around the outskirts of the mangroves searching for rays, jellyfish and nurse sharks.  Our two kayaking groups were lucky enough to observe the changes that the tide times have on what living organisms can be seen within the mangroves.

Then it was time for a snorkel on the barrier reef. This gave us a chance to explore the vast beauty of the coral reef at Leeward and also Fort George.  With the fantastic help of the Big Blue staff, we were able to dive into the reef where Year 4 really showed off their free diving skills. The list of wonderful creatures we saw was endless. One special highlight was that, after picking up a plastic cup from the ocean floor, a marvelous Green Sea Turtle cruised past the children, showing that no good deed in the ocean goes unnoticed.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Big Blue Unlimited for an absolutely fantastic, fun-filled adventurous day. It was a brilliant way to end an exciting TCI topic at school.  All of the information they taught us was so interesting and we can now go away and teach our friends and families. A special mention to the parents who also helped out with the activities – you were much needed. Finally, a thank you to all the parents for getting the children to Blue Haven in good time for a action packed day.  I’m sure that they had many exciting tales to tell of their adventures on the journey home.

Here are a few photos of us relaxing and having fun after a busy day of exploration.
