Year 1 are Immersed into the World of Animals

yr-1-animals-feb-2016-(13)As part of our current topic ‘The Carnival of Animals’, Year 1 have been fully immersed into the world of animals. We have been exploring different animals, learning new information facts, writing information sentences and creating some beautiful Eric Carle inspired art.

During our Spanish sessions, our latest focus was on learning about the special features of different animals, like tusks on elephants and manes on lions.

We, then, started to learn about Frida Khalo. She helped us figure out how to draw a self-portrait and also how to incorporate an animal somewhere on our painting.

To complete this activity, the children first spent a session sketching their self-portrait and their chosen animal on a piece of black paper, using a white pencil crayon and mirrors. Then, the children learned how to use pastels to create add more details to their paintings. We learned how to carefully blend colours together to create a more detailed outcome. Finally, the children used the pastels on their paintings. Aren’t they absolutely beautiful?

Coming up after mid-term, we will be making 3D papier mache models of our animals! What fun Year 1 are having!
