“The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher,” (theme for World Teachers’ Day 2018 International Conference)
The Ministry of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services, joins the global community in observing World Teachers’ Day 2018. Happy World Teachers’ Day!
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. It also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.
The Minister of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services, Honorable Karen Malcolm, and her team at the Ministry take this opportunity to celebrate with and express gratitude to each teacher in the archipelago for their dedication and commitment to the education of our children. In keeping with the theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day, the government has expressed its commitment, through budgetary allocation and the Education Sector Plan 2018-2022, to provide training and continuing professional development opportunities for teachers. A series of workshops were held towards the end of the 2017/18 school year and during the commencement of the 2018/19 school year.
Later this month teachers in government primary and high schools will participate in workshops addressing the Child Friendly-School Framework. Special Education Teachers will participate in six (6) online professional development sessions focusing on a selection of topics related to instructional design and environmental organization, linking practical application to theory. Teachers who deliver the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) programme will also commence continuing professional development courses.
Our aim is to ensure that teachers are qualified, have access to the resources needed to create an enabling environment where all students can be successful, and are engaged in professional communities of practice where they can share ideas with and learn from their counterparts.
