TCIRFU Tag Rugby Championships 2012

The inaugural Digicel Interschools TAG Rugby Championships were held this weekend at the TCIRFU’s Meridian Field in Grace Bay Village.  Children from schools all across Providenciales turned out to compete against each other in the game of Tag Rugby.

We entered two teams: one in the Under 8s, and another in the Under 11’s.  The children really enjoyed themselves and played fantastically.  “The children were great sports throughout the event,” commented one parent watching.  Well done everyone!  Special congratulations go to our Under 11 team who won the championship in their age group.

We would like to say a big thank you to Coach Mark for helping our teams during the tournament.  He did a fantastic job encouraging the children.  Thanks also to all the parents and friends who came out to support the event.

We would also like to congratulate Jamie Tait, the TCIRFUs Rugby Development Officer on all his hard work which has led to this competition being such a great success. He has been visiting schools across the island over the last 2 months, introducing both school children and PE teachers to the game of Tag Rugby.  All of our children and teachers have very much enjoyed learning with Jamie during their PE sessions.  His passion and enthusiasm for developing sports is immense.

Great photos Christa – many thanks for taking these for us.

In case you were wondering how tag rugby differs from rugby, tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby.  It’s played by both boys and girls together and involves the children wearing tag belts with velcro flags attached to them.  Instead of the physical tackles that are made in normal rugby, tackles in tag rugby involve the flags being pulled off of the child carrying the ball.  It is a safe and exciting way for children to be introduced to the game of rugby.
