Science Week, 4th-8th March 2013

science-week-2013Each year, during the TCI’s National Education Week, we have a themed week in school. This year’s week will have a strong Science theme, with children investigating and experimenting across the school.

Collegiate Science Students Visit Year 3 – Monday 4th March

Science students from the British West Indies Collegiate High School will be visiting our Year 3 class to participate in some joint science experiments.

Science Fair Preparation – Monday 4th – Thursday 7th Marchscience-week-2013-1

Throughout the week, there will be an abundance of in-class science work and preparation for our Science Fair on Friday. In addition to discovering a great deal of new information about Science topics being explored, the children will be encouraged to develop their Science Enquiry Skills.  These skills underpin the essential processes required for investigations, drawing conclusions and forming scientific understanding.
The children in Year 1 – 6 will also challenge each other in a ‘daily true and false Science’ Quiz.

‘World Read Aloud Day’  – Wednesday 6th March

To celebrate ‘World Read Aloud Day’ we will be sharing Science books with each other around the school and reading together.  Some classes have been working on writing their own science books.  Children in our Year 2 class are making their own books about insects that we find here in the TCI.  Our Year 5/6 class will be connecting with a school in the USA and reading to each other over the Internet.

‘World Read Aloud Day’ is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.  Find out more about ‘World Read Aloud Day’ here.

‘World Book Day’ – Thursday 7th March

Every year we celebrate ‘World Book Day’.  Linking with our science theme, we will be hosting a Non-fiction Library Challenge quiz in KS2.  Classes will be busy researching and creating questions for neighbouring classes to answer using the books in the library.  Find out more about World Book Day here.

‘Phenomenal Phenomenon Dress-Up Day’ – Thursday 7th March

Children are encouraged to participate in our ‘Phenomenal Phenomenon Dress-Up Day’ by wearing a costume that represents something from the world of science! Children should research a fact to accompany their costume, which they will share with their class and friends. Children’s costumes can represent anything that interests them: amazing animals, brilliant bugs, wild weather, crazy colours or anything else they can think of!  The classes will link with neighbouring classes over the morning to share their wonderful costumes and facts.

Science Fairs – Friday 8th March

science-week-2013-2We invite all parents and friends of Provo Primary School to join us on Friday for our two fantastic Science Fairs!

Toddlers, Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Year 1 @ 8:45 – 9:30AM

Years 2 – 6  @ 2:30 – 3:00 PM

Children in all classes have been busy observing, experimenting and reflecting on all kinds of scientific knowledge this term. Now, our young scientists are excited to share their discoveries with you!

So come and tour the school, visit each class to discover new science facts and participate in a variety of interesting science-based activities. The children will be ready to demonstrate their favourite experiments and explain their learning.  We hope that your journey around the school will allow you to learn more about our Science programme here at Provo Primary School and provide you with an opportunity to see how Science enquiry skills develop and progress as a child moves through the school.

So all in all it looks set to be a scientifically exciting week ahead!  Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to seeing you all on Friday at the Science Fairs.
