Principal’s Welcome 2006

School Newsletter

Dear parents

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting new year for Provo Primary School. All the children enjoyed their return to school. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new members of the school… students, parents and teachers alike. Please take a look at our school website to meet all the new teachers. http://provolearning.com/school/teachers.html

Mr. Mark DunbavandAs you may know from previous newsletters, I am Mr Mark and am the Principal of the school, although Miss Alison will still be around in the role of Director. I have spent 11 years as a Headteacher in two different schools in Britain and am very excited at the prospect of bringing my expertise to the exciting and challenging environment of Providenciales. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of developing a Middle School in the near future.

As you are aware we have several new staff beginning at the school this year and I am sure that you will join me in welcoming them to the school. We have been extremely fortunate in recruiting quality staff to work with your children.

Please take a look at our school website to meet all the new teachers – http://provolearning.com/school/teachers.html

A calendar of school events will also soon be available from the website.

Expectations

We have adapted our ‘school rules’ to a simple code of conduct that we expect of the children at all times in school. The teachers will share these with the children and here is a copy for yourselves.

– Care for each other

– Be honest

– Work hard

– Listen

– Look after property

In this way everyone always knows what is expected of them and others around them.

School Uniform

It was fantastic to see the children looking very smart in their uniform today. It is an important part of each child identifying with the school. Although we are not able to stock the shorts anymore, they are available at Gap or Old Navy and we are trying to find a supplier on the island. Can I also remind parents that a hat and sensible shoes (not flip flops) are part of this uniform.

Start of  the Day

The school day starts at 08:30 but children are allowed on site from 08:15. Please do not bring them before this time as there are no staff allocated to supervise them and teachers are often preparing for the beginning of the day.

When children do arrive between 08:15 and 08:30 they should go straight to their Homerooms where the teachers will be ready to greet them. This will stop congestion along the walkways and give the children a place where they can sit and talk to their classmates. It also means that everybody is ready for the start of day at 08:30.

Continuing to improve

As I’m sure you are aware, there have been several changes over the summer break.

  – The Pre-school room has been completed and looks terrific with all the soft play equipment for the children to use. It is a rich learning environment that will be fun and exciting. It will be mainly used by Toddlers and Pre-school but will also be available to other year groups as appropriate. It is a marvelous resource to enrich the school.

Soft Play

– Not quite as exciting, but just as important, are the bore holes which have been installed to ensure that the school doesn’t suffer from flood damage in the future!

– Further improvements to the site include an extended play area for Key Stage 2, external redecoration of the buildings, more sand in Toddler play artea and new fencing in places.

- New computers and data projectors have been installed in all the classes in Grade 1 –6 and the Library. This will allow far greater use of multi-media resources and further increase the ICT skills and capabilities of the children.

Looking to the future, talks have already begun with the Kwatcha Holdings (the owners of the school buildings) of the school with regard the specifications of the Middle School which is due to open in September 2007. The aim is to provide quality education with high standards in both core subjects and specialized subjects whilst still ensuring that education is based around the needs of the individual child. This will be a big challenge but one that we will succeed at. Further news of this development will be brought to you throughout the year.

As I said at the beginning, this is going to be an exciting year and I look forward to working with you all to benefit the children at Provo Primary.

I am always happy to see parents if there are problems so please come and see me at any time.

Yours sincerely

Mr Mark

Principal
