M is for Mountie

The children and teachers throughout the school were very excited to meet a real life Canadian Mountie, Mr. Mark Larkin. The first thing the Year 1 and 2 children noticed were his big shiny brown boots!  Dressed in his full uniform, he talked to the children about where he was from in Canada and then he read the book ‘M is for Mountie’ (which he kindly donated to our school library).

From the book,  the children learned about the history of the Mounties, their training, their badges and their uniform.  After the book, the children each got to hold the Mountie’s gloves and police badge and he answered all their questions.  He also brought stickers, pins and leaflets to hand out to everyone to take home.

Mark also spoke to the older children, sharing a presentation with lots of photos and he went into our Early Years classes, too.  Everyone really enjoyed his visit and would like to say a very big thank you to him for coming to see us!  Mark is on vacation and got permission to bring his uniform with him so that he could visit some of the local schools here on the island.  It must have been very hot wearing his uniform in this warm climate. We imagine as soon as he left he was keen to change into his board shorts and cool off in our refreshing ocean!
