Kindergarten set out to measure dinosaurs!

k-dinosaurs-measuring-april-2015-6Have you ever wondered how tall a tyrannosaurus rex was? Or how long a long a brachiosaurus was from nose to tail? Well, you’re in luck – Kindergarten set out to find this out!

To visualise how big these incredible creatures were, the class set about measuring string that would show the height and length of each type of dinosaur. Then we attached helium balloons to the string so that we could imagine how long the dinosaurs’ necks were. The results were incredible!

When learning about making measurements, Kindergarten students were challenged to measure big objects that required us to use a meter stick. We discovered that most of us were taller than a meter but that no-one was taller than two meters. We also realised that our classroom carpets were pretty big – we needed three meter sticks for some of them.

However, all children were amazed to discover how big some dinosaurs were. They would have made our classroom seem tiny!

A brachiosaurus, the tallest dinosaur, could be up to 16 meters tall! That’s HUGE!

And an apatosaurus could be up to 23 meters long! It would only just fit in the school grounds.

And, as you can see, it was fun to try to ‘feed’ the dinosaur when the wind blew the balloons closer to the ground.

In addition to our measuring project, children also spent time inventing their own dinosaurs while describing how big or small they were. Some of these were over 100 meters tall! I’m glad we didn’t have to measure these…we’d have been there all day!
