Kindergarten Explore Space through Imaginary Adventures

k-space-mar-2015 (2)Our space topic may have been a small step for our Kindergartners, but they have all taken giant leaps in their learning over the past 6 weeks!

The whole class have been excited to share their knowledge of space with parents, siblings, teachers and each other. Everyone has enjoyed learning wonderful facts about space.  Our young astronauts were amazed to learn how people eat, sleep, drink, wash, brush teeth or comb their hair while in space! And understanding how spaceships can communicate with earth…well, that blew our minds!

We studied different rockets so that we could design one for ourselves. We compared different rocket shapes and designs, including comparing how different countries have built spaceships. We learned the names of various rocket parts and labelled our own designs so that we, too, could travel to space.

We looked at pictures of the inside of NASA’s rockets and control room and learned what various buttons were used for. Of course, we used this knowledge to make buttons for our own space centre and rocket in our play areas.

While this topic has led us to undertake many construction projects, there has also been plenty of other play opportunities. We have listened to stories and explored information books; played interactive games and apps that link our phonics and sight words to the topic of space; become storytellers as part of our Talk4Writing project; learned to use our number knowledge to arrange a countdown to blast-off; and explored space through our art and imaginative play. Each child has found new opportunities to express their learning in new ways!

As we progress in our topics, we look forward to seeing even greater diversity in the learning activities selected by our young students!
