Healthy Reefs Need Sharks!

shark-talk-mar-2015-3Years 5 and 6 were extremely fortunate to attend Brayton Hall and listen to a talk delivered by Rob Stewart. Rob Stewart is an enthusiastic advocate for sharks and the maker of the documentary film ‘Sharkwater’.

Feedback from students indicated the following:

‘A great way to show how children can be advocates for something in which they believe in.’

‘A well-prepared talk which was easy to follow and understand.’

‘Rob was clearly passionate about sharks and extremely knowledgeable about them.’

Following this, our Year 2-4s were also able to join in as Rob was able to squeeze in a time to come to the school and talk to them too – thank you Ali for arranging this.

Community members are invited to a public screening of ‘Sharkwater’ Saturday evening – see details here.

In his talks Rob highlighted the importance of having sharks in our reefs, the impact of shark hunting and how we can be strong advocates for sharks; regardless of where we are in the world. Moreover, Rob held the attention of his audience and spoke passionately about the trials and tribulations he experienced when he originally set out to make his documentary. Additionally, he reinforced the vital role this documentary played in getting this message across the world and in helping certain countries consider their legal frameworks regarding the hunting and capturing of sharks.

To conclude the discussions, Rob opened up the floor and the students were given the opportunity to ask questions. Our students asked open-ended questions and really got Rob thinking before he answered. The questions were well thought out and it was obvious they had listened carefully to the key messages outlined.
