Great Sportsmanship at the TCIRFU TAG Rugby Competition

rugby-dec-2015-8-(8)On Saturday 5th December Provo Primary for fortunate enough to be invited to participate in the annual TCIRFU TAG rugby competition for all the schools on the island. This term the children in Years 1-6 have been developing their TAG Rugby skills with Mr. George, together with Courtney Tinkler from the TCIRFU. A big thank you to Courtney for all the fantastic help and resources she has provided. The children have all enjoyed this tremendously.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank the TCIRFU for offering this support to our school programme.

Provo Primary were able to field two teams in the competition, comprised of children from Year 3 – 6 – Provo Primary Ospreys and Provo Primary Pelicans.  Both teams played well throughout the tournament with both reaching the finals for a fantastic head to head game.

The Ospreys begun their campaign with a very closely contested 2-2 with the International School.  I think all spectators would agree this was a match of two halves. They then went on to beat the Barbarians A to win their group comfortably and went on to the semifinals to play the Barbarians B. A special mention for the teamwork Ospreys showed in these matches, I think all the parents would agree it was wonderful to see the game of TAG rugby played with such enjoyment.

The Pelicans on the other hand started off their tournament with a very closely competed match against the Barbarian B team, and then went on to a very comprehensive victory against Enid Capron. Lots of tries scored by the children across the board meant the referee was certainly kept on her toes! A special mention for the team spirit that the Pelicans played with.  It was an absolute joy to see the children sharing the ball round and passing the ball through the hands. Clearly the skills taught in PE were on display here. Two victories meant the Pelicans won their group setting them up for an anticipated match against the International school.

If the group stages were exciting, the semifinals were setting up to be a completely different level of excitement. Two matches with the same outcome, however, very different in the way they were achieved. The Ospreys contested a very tight match against Barbarians B going into extra time.  There was a nail biting few minutes, which finally came to victorious conclusion. The Pelicans, however, had a more fruitful score line with a girl’s try getting them 3 points, they finished with a comfortable score line over a well-organised International Team.

So the final came around. Provo Pelicans vs Provo Ospreys, the grand final was set to be closely fought battle, both teams representing Provo Primary on and off the field to the highest caliber of sportsmanship. With 2 tries to AR the score line crept away from the Ospreys with result in the Pelicans favour 6-2. Overall, Provo Primary School showed fantastic teamwork skills and played the game of TAG Rugby with a wonderful sense of sportsmanship. Both teams did fantastically to reach the final. Congratulations to AR who was awarded the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the tournament. A final thank you to Simon Taylor for assisting with managing the Ospreys.  They particularly enjoyed learning from a local Rugby legend!

A special mention also goes to two of our players who joined other schools that didn’t have enough players to make a full team.  They played fantastically for their new teams and the coaches and referee were all impressed them and their sportsmanship.
