Egg-citing News!

We are eggs-tremely egg-cited to see that our little hummingbird has laid an egg!

Having finished her nest a couple of days ago, we have since been waiting patiently, and checking the nest every time she has flown off for food, to see if she had laid an egg or two.  To our delight we saw one this afternoon.

The tiny milky-white, elliptical egg is just a little bit bigger than a jelly bean.   Bahama Woodstars usually lay 2  white eggs so we look forward to taking another peek tomorrow to see if she lays a second egg.

She will incubate her egg or eggs for 15-18 days.  With only 16 days until the last day of the school year, we hope that a chick will hatch in time for us to see.   Great timing on her part to have the egg(s) hatch when school finishes and the playground will be quiet.  We will have Summer Camp during the holiday, however,  so I am sure the children will enjoy monitoring the chick(s) progress during this time.

Here is a photo of proud mum today, sat on the nearby branch that she often flies to before approaching the nest.  Does her tummy look a little chubby to you – perhaps there is another egg in there waiting to come out!
