Celebrating the ‘Week of the Young Child’ 2016

mother-goose-oct-2016-1What a fantastic week it has been with all the children in Early Years joining in the celebration of Early Childhood Education Department’s TCI ‘Week of the Young Child’.  See a video of some of our young toddlers singing Humpty Dumpty.

Throughout the week the children in Early Years got the chance to experience and enjoy one of the Week of the Young Child’s themes – Mother Goose!  The idea being that ‘reciting and singing of nursery rhymes help to train children’s memory’.  So we all chose one of Mother Goose’s traditional nursery rhymes and completed special activities around it.

Toddlers liked learning all about Humpty Dumpty and his fall from a wall. Pre-school used their creative skills to make beautiful stars to accompany their rhyme…can you guess it?  That’s right, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  Junior Kindergarten learnt the rhyme La itzy bitzy arana…wait, is that even English?  With the help of Mrs Yorka, Junior Kindergarten were lucky enough to learn their rhyme, Itsy Bitsy Spider, in Spanish!  And finally, Kindergarten chose a rhyme with a piggy theme to match their Talk4Writing story The 3 Little Pigs…except in this rhyme there were 5…and This little piggy went to market.  To round off the week, we invited our parents to a special assembly to celebrate all our hard work and perform our rhymes.

Part of the aim was to ‘inspire children and adults to make it a habit to take time to read a little each day’ through a ‘Read Across the TCI’ day.  So the children in Toddlers, Pre-School and Junior and Senior Kindergarten invited their parents to read their favourite book with them in their classroom!  What a success it was!  In Kindergarten we enjoyed a range of stories including Stickman, Peppa Pig, Room on a Broom and Spaghetti with the Yeti.

Everyone in the Early Years really enjoyed being part of the ‘Week of the Young Child’ celebrations and we cannot wait to carry on reading with our grown ups and learning more rhymes and songs in our classrooms.

Well done to all the children and especially Ms. Myrna for dressing up and being a very convincing Mother Goose!
