Building our Toddlers language through play and routines…

toddlers-settling-in-oct-2015 (11)Language development is a very exciting time for toddlers. It accelerates rapidly and toddlers’ ways of communicating expand from simple smiles and gestures to using words and phrases to express their needs.

Our Toddler programme is designed to provide many opportunities to encourage toddlers to communicate with the adults and children around them. We talk to them continuously so that they are exposed to as many new words as possible. Through everyday activities, we help them make connections between actions/things and the words that correspond to them.

Daily routines such as snack time, toileting and story time help toddlers learn new words. These are powerful language activities with lots of vocabulary extension.

As they engage in pretend play and other similar activities, they think out loud and talk to themselves and gradually will include others. We have many different types of toys which require children to use different types of language during play.

We encourage sensory play where we help the children to describe what they see, feel, hear, taste and smell. This provides them with many more descriptive words to use.

Our Toddler class offers a warm, friendly setting which encourages children to confidently express themselves naturally and to grow and learn at their own pace.
