On Thursday, the older children were ‘book buddies’ for the younger ones: this meant that they chose a book that younger children might like, read it so as they knew what it was all about, then shared it with some younger children (remembering to use expression and to let them see the pictures).
Grade 6 – and some of Grade 4/5 – went to Kindergarten, JK, Pre-K and Toddlers; the rest of Grade 4/5 went to Grade 2; Grade 3 went to Grade 1.
Grade 6 were asked what they enjoyed about their experience; this is what they said:
J says: ”I really liked reading with the Kindergarteners. They listened really well. I especially enjoyed it when I finished reading and they all gave me a big hug!”
A says: “Sharing the books was a great experience for me as this is my last year at Provo Primary. I enjoy spending as much time with the younger children as I can. I was in Pre K with my younger sister and two of her friends… they were great listeners and enjoyed the books I was reading!! I had tons of fun and I hope they did too.”
R says: ” I really enjoyed reading to the younger children and they were very interested in the books I had chosen to read. They also asked and answered lots of questions. I think this helps them with their social skills.”
J says: “I really enjoyed reading to the toddlers. It gave the rest of Grade 6 and I the opportunity to see how well we socialized with the younger children.”
S says: “I enjoyed reading to one child because I was able to translate the story for her, so I got to know her better.”
M says: “I went to Kindergarten to tell them a story. I read in Spanish so I told my story to two Spanish girls. I enjoyed it very much.”
This blog entry was done by the children of Grade 6. It’s our first attempt. Please let us know what you think.
I think this is a great entry grade 6. You did really well, especially considering it is your first time.
It’s always great to see the way that you care for the younger kids in the school and it’s part of what makes you such a fantastic group of children.
Well done ALL!
