An Exciting Lesson in TCI Heritage and Culture

Mr. David Bowen, the Turks and Caicos Islands Director of Culture, visited Provo Primary yesterday to tell the children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 all about our local Turks and Caicos heritage and culture.

With a table piled high of musical instruments, objects and artefacts, Mr. Bowen gave a highly entertaining and informative presentation. We learnt about ripsaw music and local instruments, our national dish – peas and hominy, and how we prepare our local shellfish, conch. We also learnt about our basket and weaving industry and more about our national costume and other symbols.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed learning lots of new things, as well as answering and asking questions, and sharing the TCI knowledge they have previously learnt at school. The teachers all very much enjoyed it, too! Thank you, Mr. Bowen, for making our local heritage so interesting to learn about.
