A Wonderful Day of World Book Day Celebrations – 2016

world-book-day-mar-2016 (1)Well, what a fabulous day we have all had. This is now officially the 19th year that World Book Day has been celebrated all over the world and I think that Provo Primary has participated for pretty much nearly all of these over the years!

Here is one of my favourite photos from the day…  while on playtime duty this morning, I heard giggles and chatter coming from one of the playground bushes.  Peeking through the foliage to investigate further, I came across a group of  Year 2s all huddled together in a hideaway den, happily sharing their new ‘Book Swap’ spoils.   How delightful!  This photo truly captures ‘the enjoyment of reading’ and everything that we hoped to promote through this World Book Day event.

Sharing and reading stories and facts with our reading buddies with other classes in the school was lots of fun. Look how colourful and snug we look in our PJs along with our cuddly toys and pillows. In the Early Years, the mood was set with rooms darkened and lit by low lighting and fairy lights.

A talented group of Year 9 Students from the British West Indies Collegiate performed amazing skits they had written themselves and then read stories to us. In particular, it was heart-warming to see so many Provo Primary alumni among the students, to reconnect with them and who they are today, and to travel down memory lane back to their Provo Primary days.

To cap it all, everyone went home at the end of the day with at least one new book to read from all the generous books donated by all of YOU, making our yearly ‘Book Swap’ another fantastic success. What an amazing selection of books were brought in.  It was so lovely to see the excitement on the children’s faces and hear their shared babble as they eagerly browsed and chose their new books.  The silence that ensued afterwards, with the children happily engrossed in reading them, was equally wonderful to experience.

Good news also is that the selection of books left at the end of the Book Swap, will be donated to the local Provo Public Library as part of our School Council commitment to support this community facility this year.

Thank you everyone for a magnificent World Book Day, 2016. We certainly believe that the children at Provo Primary truly LOVE books and hopefully slept well after this busy day of reading!
