Provo Primary’s Summer Camp 2012

Provo Primary’s Summer Camp 2012 saw lots of interesting and exciting activities this year.  With Mind Up, Wake Up sessions, Sports and Roller Hockey Camp, Arts and Crafts activities and MindUP sessions.  Here are some of the highlights:

MIND UP,WAKE UP SESSIONS

Did you know that learning math is a great work out for your brain and if you want to be the best at what you do, you need to be brain smart?

The day started with our Mind Up Wake Up sessions to get the brain wiring and firing while children enjoyed working on some problem solving projects. One of our projects was to build a hotel out of blocks and price it out with using various materials, for example, blocks made out of glass cost more per unit than those made of concrete.

Buying hundreds and thousands blocks cost less than the tens and ones. While architects had to make decisions as to whether they should go for taller structures using less expensive materials or lower buildings with beautiful glass blocks, their business partners had the task of pricing it all out.

Just as they thought they had it all worked out, the next day when they came to work, they learned that there was a sale offering 10% off certain items at a store along the street.. Would it be worth their while leaving their friend’s shop that they’d been dealing with for years, to save a few dollars? What would YOU do in that situation?

SPORTS AND ROLLER HOCKEY CAMP

Did you know that being physically active for an hour a day is important to your general well-being and helps your brain develop?

Professional hockey Player Dom Osman, Josh, and Ian organised tough daily work outs sessions which include soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming and more.  They also offered a week’s Hockey Camp. During our roller hockey camp, these budding athletes worked so hard on both their fitness and skill levels and had great fun in the process.  Here they are doing a warm up on our grass field:

ARTS AND CRAFTS CAMP ACTIVITIES

Did you know that people with creative brains are often really, really successful in businesses that they create?  The children got creative and produced some unique Art masterpieces while having fun in the process.

A TRIP TO AMANYARA

One of the highlights of Summer Camp this year was our trip to luxury resort, Amanyara. “AMANYARA?” the parents asked, “CAN WE COME?” Sadly, parents weren’t allowed through the gates, except those volunteering of course.

Our arrival took us straight to the discovery centre where Mrs. Lindsay Menson showed us all kinds of creatures such as a queen conch and a boa constrictor. After learning a lot of cool stuff, we went on a nature trail armed with magnifying glasses, tweezers, and containers to collect any interesting critters. The trail ended up on a gorgeous beach where we ate our snack and took a dip in the water. It was a fun packed morning and with so much to cram in, we were late getting back, but nobody seemed to mind, especially when they saw our Amaryara bags made out of recycled materials, our critter colouring books and water bottles. Thank you Lindsay and Amanyara for your warm hospitality.

SUMMER CAMP MINDUP SESSIONS

So, what exactly is MindUP?

“The MindUP program is anchored in current research in cognitive neuroscience, evidence-based classroom pedagogy, best-practices mindful education, precepts of social and emotional learning  and guiding principles of positive psychology. MindUP is a family of social, emotional, and attentional self-regulatory strategies and skills developed for cultivating well-being and emotional balance. Among the various MindUP skills taught to students, focused attention and nonreactive monitoring of experience from moment to moment display the potential to have a long-term impact on brain function and social and emotional behavior.

MindUP features lessons to improve behavior and learning for children. The program provides children with emotional and cognitive tools to help them manage emotions and behavior”

A MindUP classroom is characterized by:

  • Inquisitive young minds ready to learn in an environment that promotes academic success;
  • Growth of respect and personal regard as children learn to acknowledge the unique qualities of others, attentively listen to their concerns, and avoid arbitrary or negative reactions;
  • A rise in positive social exchanges among students;
