Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

In Kindergarten, we have been learning all about Life Cycles. We have been very lucky to watch a Hummingbird life cycle play out right in front of our eyes, in the Early Years playground.

As we were studying birds, we talked about the simple life cycle of a chicken and of course we had to consider the question:

Which came first… the chicken or the egg?

The Kindergarten children thought long and hard, discussing the facts.  Then they had to decide which one they thought came first.

This is what they thought… [Read more…]

Today is Safer Internet Day – 2019 – how you will help to create a kinder online community?

Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to talk to your family and friends about the safe, responsible and positive use of technology, and to pledge how you will help to create a kinder online community.

What we’ll be doing at school… Celebrating Safer Internet Day today, children across our primary and middle school will be taking part in lessons which aim to help young people understand how to keep themselves and others safe and happy online.  Plan to stay a few minutes at pick up today to see some of the activities they’ve been engaged in. We are also arranging for a community police person from the TCIPF to come and talk with our older students this week, as part of their countrywide online safety tour.

What you can do at home… To help you talk to your children at home about having a positive and safe time online, here is a link to some resources for parents and carers, including conversation starters, a fact-sheet, a family pledge card, videos and more!  Or simply try helping your children develop four critical skills – the 4Rs of online safety:

  • Respect– I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated
  • Responsibility – I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong
  • Reasoning – I question what is real
  • Resilience – I get back up from tough situations

Latest research – Giving and receiving consent in an online context… For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has launched a report into young people’s experiences of asking for, giving and receiving consent in an online context.  Read a quick summary of the research here. Have you ever met a superhero…? We have!

Year 1 and Year 2 were truly in awe after meeting a real – life superhero. From the clues, can you guess who we might have met? They defeat germs and sickness, they take care of people, wear scrubs as their superhero costume and have lots of different tools to help people feel better. Have you guessed it? That’s right… Enter superhero – Dr. Jo!

We had a fantastic morning learning all about what makes Dr. Jo such a superhero. She explained what her day to day job is and how she must carefully examine her patients before deciding the best way to take care of them and defeat those horrible germs. Dr Jo showed us some of her tools she uses to examine patients – stethoscopes, thermometers, drips, blood pressure monitors, x – rays and bandages. As you can see Year 1 and Year 2 loved discovering and using all her tools.

Thank you, Dr. Jo, for a brilliant morning! We all had a wonderful time and loved hearing how super you are! [Read more…]

QUICK! Middle School Canvas Bags are Selling Out!

Year 7 have had a busy January, selling their canvas bags across the island in order to raise funds for their end of year field trip to Upstate New York.

The children’s designs, depicting TCI’s wildlife, were selected from our Autumn term art project on pointillism. The beautiful designs have been incredibly well received so far, with over 250 bags sold to date!

Children were challenged to manage the entire project from start to finish. Along the way they have been learning how to calculate expenditure and forecast profit; convert money from one currency to another; estimate unknown costs such as duty and shipping; and finally to set prices for sales.

Enjoying our Outdoor Play

Take a look at our happy faces during varied outdoor play. With the weather a little cooler right now, we have embraced the outdoors both by keeping our classroom windows open and spending more time outside. Outdoor play is not only beneficial, but also crucial for the brain’s healthy development.

Researchers say that the frontal cortex, which is responsible for controlling emotions and problem solving, is activated during playtime. The experience of playing forces the brain to make those neurotransmitter connections that are critical to a child’s development.

Outdoor play is especially critical in core muscle development, small motor skill refinement, and increasing coordination. Children need to navigate obstacles, maintain appropriate space around other children, and use their strength to throw, catch, manipulate objects or tackle a jungle gym. [Read more…]

Superhero Landscapes

It’s all about Superheroes in Y1 and Y2 at Provo Primary School this term and we are flying into it faster than Superman!

This week, Year 1 were looking at Numicon as part of their math lesson, when we made a startling discovery!  Their shapes could be put together to look a lot like the superhero city landscape setting in our Superheroes Headquarters.  Well, you can guess what happened next…we got very excited and created a whole class landscape using all the numicon we had!  It was pretty large (see the pictures!).  And it didn’t end there…

World Wetland Day 2019 – Saturday 2nd Feb

Every year, on the 2nd of February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day (WWD).

The DECR would like to invite you to celebrate the 6th annual Turks & Caicos Islands, World Wetlands Day clean-up initiatives,  on Saturday, 2 February, from 07:30 – 09:00am at Wheeland Pond, Blue Hills, Providenciales.

Please take this opportunity to get involved in our local community, to learn about the importance of wetlands and what we can do to protect them in the fight against climate change!

I notice…I wonder…

Year 3 have once again been making mathematical explorations with the Cuisenaire rods. As we are looking at the Ancient Egyptians, we thought it would be an idea to build a flat 2D shape of a pyramid using the rods.

Once built, we observed and recorded what we noticed and what we wondered about our creations. These ideas were shared and discussed – check out our photos to see what original ideas we came up with!

What a lovely belated Christmas treat!

This week, the Year 1s had a lovely surprise when the Year 6s invited them to listen to their Christmas stories.  Year 6 had worked hard researching, planning, writing, editing, publishing and illustrating their very own Christmas stories and the Year 1 class were a willing audience.

In pairs, the Year 6s patiently read their stories to the Year 1s who enjoyed hearing all about the adventures of elves, reindeer, Santa and his sleigh.  Despite it being a little after Christmas, the stories sparked lots of conversations about the lovely holiday season the children had all had.

We look forward to lots more joint year group activities as the year goes on!

Thank you Mr Jason and the Year 6s!

Middle School Bag4Life Project – available now!

Did you know that supermarkets around the TCI will not be providing plastic bags after this month? Well, we did – so children of Provo Middle School set about making pointillism-style Bags4Life to help you carry your groceries!

Each piece of artwork was inspired by the TCI’s Beautiful By Nature animals. Done in a pointillism style, they were painted dot-by-dot by our Middle School students.

Our bags are reusable and durable, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. And we think they look great too!

Our bags are available at the Middle School and will be sold at Provo Primary School for the week of January 14th-18th at our 3pm collection time. They cost $20 and all profits will go towards the Year 7 end of year field trip.

We hope that you like our Beautiful By Nature designs – pick up a bag today!

Santa visits bringing gifts of books for all

A HUGE thank you to the fire service for once again bringing Santa to our school, laden with sacks of books for all the children throughout the school.  What a joy to see the smiles on all the children’s faces as each received their gift and got their own special time to sit and chat with Santa.  A lovely way to bring an end to our busy term.

Thank you, Santa!

A big thank you to our elf helpers, including many of our alumni students, to the PPPA for our Turkberry treat and to our Year 3 parents for the much appreciated morning coffee and goodies

Santa in the Streets – Spreading the Happiness!

A HUGE thank you to ALL of you who participated and bought gifts in for the ‘Santa in the Streets’ event. It was so, so wonderful to see all of your generous donations taking over the stage area; Santa was getting surrounded by your kind and generous offerings.

The School Council assisted Santa in the important task of distributing your gifts to all the children at the ‘Ashley Learning Centre’ and the ‘Oseta Jolly’ School during this final week of school.

The School Council were AMAZING! They not only assisted Santa in giving out the gifts, they also helped with packing boxes, sorting gifts, organizing the books AND gave out food and drinks all the children. The parents – Kristen and Joan, and I were truly proud of how the School Council went ‘above and beyond’ their call of duty and responded to each task with care, kindness and hard work – what a fantastic attitude to have. Councillors, you were marvelous!

A Jingly Jangly Thank You

A great BIG THANK YOU to everyone that attended this years Jingle Jam at Provo Primary School! We had a record turn out and made a fabulous profit that all goes directly back into the Early Years to be spent at the end of the year on extra special goodies to enhance each Child’s fun and learning at school! We couldn’t do it each year with out the amazing help from all the mums and dads of the Early Years and beyond, whether you donated decorations, baked some Christmas treats, did a shift on the bar, simply attended and ate your fair share of mince pies or were part of the truly dedicated team of mums that put the whole event together this year – THANK YOU from myself and from all the kids who will benefit from your Christmas giving spirit! MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone! Cant wait to see you all next year!

Kind regards, Kate Burchill

Lining up for Mondrian art in Year 4

In this last and very busy week of term it has been nice to think back over this first part of Year 4 and how hard the children have worked. So much progress has been made and I’m excited to look forward to the New Year and a hopefully much more settled term – for all of us.

I wanted to show you a picture of the art work the class did, inspired by the Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian. The pictures have been up in our classroom, but some of you might not have had a chance to see them properly – they are very authentic looking, I’m sure you’ll agree!

Learn more about Piet Mondrian here.

Here are 10 crafty projects should your child be interested in doing more art over the holidays.

Busy Hands, Happy Thoughts

Painting, messy play and drawing can help children express emotion, explore colour, use their senses, investigate process and outcomes and create aesthetically pleasing works.

As you can see from the children’s faces the paintbrush almost becomes an instrument of inner peace.

Creative Connections

Construction and building toys are fun and exciting to use and inspire children’s imagination. They also have significant cognitive and academic benefits for children of all ages. They provide a creative platform for children to learn shapes and colours, while they also help to develop visual spatial awareness. While playing and building, children learn to cooperate with others and problem solve. This type of toy improves fine motor manipulation and strength as well.

Take a look at the fun we have had so far in JK with various construction toys and activities.

Provo Middle School Celebrate the TCI Salt Industry in Art!

Year 7 students of Provo Middle School participated in the Provo Arts & Craft Expo, sharing their learning about the TCI Salt Industry in the process.

In their Design & Technology lessons, students were challenged to create a range of products that were inspired by the TCI’s salt raker heritage. Students arrived at the Arts & Craft Expo ready to sell a wide range of items in order to raise funds for our end of year field trip to upstate New York. We had everything! From cards and calendars, to salt shakers and Christmas ornaments – Year 7 produced real diversity in their ideas and designs.

Students worked their stall throughout the weekend, introducing themselves to customers and explaining our learning journey this term. All products were well received and many happy customers walked away from our stall with handfuls of salt-inspired items.

We were especially pleased to be selling products sent to us by Ms Cynthia of Salt Cay Salt Works, with whom we visited on our field trip to Salt Cay in October. We also sold specially-made soaps that were produced by Ms Arlene of Island Organics. We loved seeing how these two businesses continue to use natural TCI salt in their products.

After a very successful weekend selling, children will now evaluate their products and discover whether they were able to make a profit from each item they designed. Judging by the reaction of one customer, who claimed “this stall is the most fun at the whole fair!”, children will have some very positive evaluations to write!

None of us can wait for our end-of-year field trip next June – we are certainly one step closer after this weekend!

Great Effort in Primary & Middle School Swim Meet

Students from Provo Primary & Middle Schools participated with great skill, perseverance and stamina this week – with some taking part in a developmental swim meet for the first time. Hosted by the International School of the TCI, the meet gave a total of 20 children the opportunity to compete.

Children participated in two-length races in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. All students set good times that can be used to track their own development in the future. A number of children found themselves paired in tight contests throughout the morning; competing in extremely close races against other students in the pool. It was a pleasure to see our children facing a new challenge with such determination and a positive attitude!

The event finished with two 4×2 length relays and a fun whole-team race at the end.

Very well done to our eight Provo Primary & Middle School swimmers! We look forward to the next opportunity to compete in the pool.
