A Matter of Fact!

crabs150507.jpg

The Kindergarteners are currently exploring the topics of ‘Under the Sea’ and ‘Growth’.

Last week we looked at information books to find out some facts about crabs. We found out that crabs have hard shells and strong claws, they like to hide under rocks and they grow a new shell if their shell falls off. We each tried to remember some of the facts about crabs and wrote them down.

Please come into our classroom to see our display and read some of the facts we have written!

Read on to see some more of our work about ‘Under the Sea’ and ‘Growth’.

See How We Grow

tpict0297_resize-0705200711.jpg

The Toddlers have been learning all about the spring and discovering what plants, animals and insects need to blossom and grow. We read a story about children who made house from sunflowers and played in it until the flowers tumbled down and the children collected seeds to plant again the following spring. They then had a go at planting their own sunflowers and learnt that they need water and light in order to grow.

Spring is Here!

The Pre-schoolers came ‘springing’ back to class very excitedly after their Easter Holiday. Well, it’s Spring and they were pleased when they saw all the pretty colours of paint ready for handprints.

As if by magic, their handprints become a beautiful flower garden! Isn’t it amazing to see what these little hands can do? We have done several activities over the few weeks linked to out topic of ‘Growing Things’.

Sports’ Day – Kindergarten

On Thursday 26th April, Kindergarten, JK, Pre-K and Toddlers went to the soccer field to hold their annual Sports’ Day. Most parents and the rest of the school came to watch and support – loudly! We were highly entertained by circle games (with super singing), relay races with puppets and other objects, relay races to ‘make a rainbow’, races balancing beanbags on bats and skipping.

100 Today!

As this is our 100th Blog Entry, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and children for the WONDERFUL entries they have done so far.

I have really enjoyed reading and looking at all the fantastic things that you have been doing in school. It makes me feel proud to be a part of something so great. We are very fortunate to have such a special group of people at our school who work so closely together to provide such a stimulating environment for our children to grow.

Well done everyone and continue to make this such a happy place to be and please continue with THE AMAZING BLOGGING!

Brand new interactive technology

mark_iwb1_250407.jpg mark_iwb2_250407.jpg

Children at our school now have a brand new learning tool. The school has just installed an interactive whiteboard in the ICT Suite. The special board, linked to a presenter and its own sophisticated software, enables children to interact with it directly rather than through a computer keyboard. This brings a whole new aspect to the children’s learning.

The software also includes a vast array of resources covering all National Curriculum subjects and much, much more.

This is the first interactive board in the Turks and Caicos Islands and we are proud to be bringing the best resources possible to our children. Look out for more exciting information showing how the children are using it.

Grade 3 – Moving Monsters

At the end of last term, the Grade 3’s completed their Design Technology models of ‘Moving Monsters’. This unit focused on developing the children’s understanding of control through investigating simple pneumatic systems. We chose to make dragons as we had been reading lots of stories about dragons in our Literacy work. Click on the movie below to see one of our dragons in action.

Friendly Bacteria

Micro-organisms are small (very small) living organisms that like the same things as we do: oxygen, moisture, food and an even temperature. Micro-organisms exist everywhere: some are harmful and even dangerous, some cause no problems and even help us (for instance in our digestive tracts).
img_2233.jpg img_2234.jpg
We were looking at ‘friendly’ bacteria like yogurt and yeast. We investigated the effect of yeast when making bread. We made 6 different sets of bread rolls – ranging from having no yeast to too much yeast – and observed the effect. As you can see, the amount of yeast made a significant difference.

Whilst some of the children in Grades 3-5 were out of school competing in the Inter-Schools Athletics, the rest of the Grades 3-5 joined together to work on a fun problem solving activity. Supplied with only a small pile of newspapers and a roll of tape, they were set the challenge – ‘Can you design and make a chair that will support your weight?’

This term the Toddlers have had great fun listening to lots of stories, one of their favourite’s was the tale of the little gingerbread boy.
After reading the story the Toddlers had a go at decorating and eating their own gingerbread men. We also had a go at making gingerbread men from playdough. Take a look at how we got on.

Book Swapping

One of the final events in our Book Week was a Book Swap.

img_2138.jpg img_2143.jpg img_2141.jpg

img_2139.jpg img_2140.jpg

Children brought in a selection of books that they had read several times and then had the opportunity to choose another that was new to them. Hopefully many children went home with another exciting read!

More Book Buddies at Provo Primary School

Yesterday, the Grade 1 and 3 got together to share and read books together. The Grade 3s read popular picture books to the Grade 1s and in return, the Grade 1s read their reading books to them. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to our next reading buddy time.

Book Buddies

On Thursday, the older children were ‘book buddies’ for the younger ones: this meant that they chose a book that younger children might like, read it so as they knew what it was all about, then shared it with some younger children (remembering to use expression and to let them see the pictures).
