On Monday 2nd June, all of the children from Grade 5/6 of Provo Primary School flew off to Orlando for 4 days. The field trip was organised through an American Company, allowing us to access Disney’s Youth Education Scheme and included 3 workshops run by Disney experts in Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios as well as giving us access to the other activities in the parks too!
A Fire Truck Visits The Early Years!
In Junior Kindergarten our topic is ‘Community Helpers’. We have talked about different people in the community who help us. We were particularly interested in firefighters and were lucky enough to have a fire truck from the Provo Fire Station visit us. We invited the children from Pre-School and Kindergarten to join us for a ride in the fire truck. Click below to see more photos.
Music in Grade Four
Grade Four love playing the steel drums during their music lessons. They have learnt the names and roles of the different drums, as well as memorizing some of the chords which they have to play.
Not too tricky for Kindergarten!
Each week in Kindergarten we tackle the ‘tricky’ words using lots of different strategies. We focus on two or three of these words each week and have different stations set up in our classroom to help us to read and spell them.
Preschoolers Keeping Healthy!
In Preschool this month, we have been experiencing and learning ways to keep ourselves healthy – this included exercising in preparation for our sports day events and learning about the importance of drinking water and eating fruits and vegetables. We involved parents and made links with the community which brought some furry fun into the preschool classroom….read on to find out more and to see the pictures!
Grade 2 Visit Skybase at Providenciales Airport
The Grade 2 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Skybase at Providenciales Airport. Captain Donny Click took us on a guided tour and showed us the hanger, a small plane and a helicopter.

Grade 1 say, "Enjoy Lots of Fruits and Vegetables!"
Grade 1 have been having a delicious time learning about different types of fruits and vegetables. This week we have all been busy getting ready for Fruity Friday on the 25th of April by making observational drawings of different fruits and vegetables.
Jk in the Jungle
This term, one of our topics is Jungle Animals. We created a jungle of our own in our classroom.
We enjoyed listening to stories and rhymes about jungle animals. We especially liked ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz, and ‘The Animal Boogie’ by Debbie Harter.
Grade Four Visit Cheshire Halls
Before Spring Break, the Grade Four children enjoyed a trip to Cheshire Halls. Cheshire Halls is a 200 year-old ruin of a former cotton plantation. The National Trust has carefully preserved the site so that it stays as one of Providenciales’ key historic attractions.
The children had a fun and informative tour (and a free Birds of TCI calendar). They especially enjoyed smelling and tasting some of the fresh herbs which still grow on the estate. [Read more…]
Grades 1 and 2 Visit the Conch Farm
At the end of last term, Grades 1 and 2 enjoyed a great trip to the Turks and Caicos Conch Farm – the only one in the whole world! Danver gave us a super tour and we learned all about the life cycle of the conch. It was fun to meet Sally and Jerry, the resident wild conch. We also enjoyed singing the song ‘Dry Conch’. Listen to the song as you see photos of our trip. Thanks again to all the parents who helped out with transport. So much to see and learn – I think we all learned something new!
Click the conch farm image to visit their website. Find out more about conch and plan your own trip to the farm. Grades 1 and 2 highly recommend that you take a visit!
Creative Dance
Ms Shara has been back working with Grade 5/6 this term and together, they have been exploring choreography.
On the next page is a video clip of their whole dance.
In the Style of Vincent Van Gogh
In Grade 2, we have enjoyed looking at some of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. He used vivid colours and wild brush strokes to express how he was feeling when he painted. This term, different people have helped us to use pastels, paint and computer software to create our own pictures in the style of Van Gogh. Take a look at our slideshows to see our work.

"Inspired by aboriginal art" in Grade 3
Australian Aboriginal art is the oldest living art tradition in the world, with paintings in rock shelters dating back 20,000 years. The art includes naturalistic paintings of humans, plants and animal figures.
Aboriginal art involves story telling, myths, rituals, sorcery, and magic. Artists describe their dreams, the stories of creation, their beliefs, and their spirituality.
Grade 3 have been creating their own artwork inspired by aboriginal designs. Click here to see the children hard at work!
Spelling City
Looking for a fun educational site that can help children improve your child’s spelling skills. Miss Alison recommends that you check out Spelling City
This site:
– contains over 25,000 words, including plurals, contractions, future and past tenses
– uses a REAL human voice that says both the word and the word in a sentence
– has a ‘Teach Me’ function that spells out the word using both visual and auditory input to improve retention
– allows parents to enter and save their own spelling lists for their children
– lets children play games with their words or any saved lists
– enables parents to save and share their lists.
This is an American website so remember that our Grades will be one lower on this site – eg. Our Grade 1 is an American Kindergarten and our Grade 3 will be an American Grade 2.
Presently, this site is best viewed in Internet Explorer as it has some known issues with Firefox.
Kindergarten Travel Around the World!
This term in Senior Kindergarten we have been exploring different countries around the world. We started by making our own passports. We used the digital camera to take photographs of ourselves and stuck them in our passports. We also filled in all our personal details. Our passports are not all the same, as there are lots of different nationalities in our class!
Click here to find out about the different countries we have explored.
Grade 2 Challenge you to Solve their Numeracy Puzzle?
The Grade 2 enjoy solving numeracy problems. Our latest challenge was a computer-based puzzle and involved a nature reserve where six pairs of animals need to be given new homes in six different environments. The children were given clues, which included positional language, to help them decide which animals should live in which areas.
After, the children worked in pairs to position their own animals and wrote clues for another pair of children to use. They enjoyed doing these so much that that the class decided to make a large display so that children in other classes could have a go. The children all worked together to make a large-scale version of the Nature Reserve plan and movable animal cards. We hope you get a chance to come into the Computer Room and have a go at solving our Numeracy puzzle!
Click here to see some photos of the children making the map and close ups of some of the clues.
Fun for all at Playtimes
Playtimes have been far more interesting recently with a greater choice and variety of activities for the children. Some of the money raised by FoPPS went to provide the children with a range of play equipment. Along with the sailshades purchased earlier this means that children can enjoy a quiet game in the shade or learn to play an exciting new game with their friends.
New games include ‘giant’ versions of Chess, Four in a Row, Checkers, Backgammon, and Jenga along with traditional games such as Tic Tac Toe and Ring Toss.
The games have been very popular with the children – Thank you!
Click on the link to see us playing with our new games.
Online Guitar Lessons
For those of you interested in learning to play the guitar, this is a great site. The teacher, Ben, really breaks the teaching down into easy to follow segments. Although some of the lessons are easier than others, they are probably suitable for older children and adults. Josh is thoroughly enjoying them and is looking forward to playing when he comes back to Provo.
Santa Vacationing on Middle Caicos
Santa has been spotted vacationing on Middle Caicos over the holiday season!
Happy Holidays, from everyone at Provo Primary.
In the News: Our Christmas Show
Our Grade 1-6 Christmas Cabaret was a hit. Watch this WIV4 news clip to see some of the highlights.
2nd TCI National Cross Country Championship
On the morning of Friday 16th November, a group of 6 girls and 3 boys represented Provo Primary School in the National Cross Country Championships.
Schools from all over Turks and Caicos took part and our children participated in the 1 mile event for children under 11. All of the children completed the course in quite exceptional times – bearing in mind that the team had been hit by illness over the past 2 weeks, affecting training schedules. In fact, our Girls’ Team finished within a few places of each other, demonstrating super team spirit and our best team score to date. There were only 3 boys able to compete and they all did well – our best placing being 5th overall – an outstanding achievement considering the size of our school and the number of competitors.
Well done to all our athletes, we are so proud of you!
