Junior Kindergarten Bell Ringers
Can you identify this well known nursery rhyme that the Junior Kindergarten are playing? Let Mrs. Myrna know if your recognise the tune.
The Junior Kindergarten enjoyed playing the hand bells today. Wow, what talent! They carefully followed the colour-coded dots to create the music. They really had to concentrate and follow the score. Just think how this reflects and develops early reading skills in a fun and engaging way.
Click here to play ‘Handbell Hero’ a rhythm game where you play hand bells similar to Guitar Hero. Okay, so it’s Christmas jingles and it’s now May, but it’s still fun and quite a challenge!
Grade 3 Design a 'Fair Test' Science Experiment
The Grade 3’s have designed a Science experiment to see which surface material will make a plasticine ball ‘splat’ the most. After making their predictions, they set off in pairs to see if they could set up a ‘fair test’ using the equipment they were given. To insure that their experiment was a fair test, they knew that they must change only one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the same.
Scientists call the changing factors in an experiment variables. The different surface materials needed to be the only changing variable, everything else needed to stay the same.

‘Dancescapes’ Workshop
Today during their PE lessons, the children throughout the school had the opportunity to take part in a modern dance workshop, led by choreographer Luis Kavouras and students from the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ (UNLV) Department of Dance.
After watching a few short performances that portrayed different styles of dance, the children were taught a sequence of movements from ‘Icarus’, a modern dance piece choreographed by Luis. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and it was truly amazing to see all ages, together, performing alongside the dancers.

3rd Place Red Cross Poster Winner
Congratulations to our Grade 3 winner in the recent Red Cross’ National poster competition. The poster competition was judged by art professionals, independent of the TCI Red Cross. Entries were judged based on the theme “Power of Humanity/People Helping People”.
Kindergarten have fun at the Zoo
Miss Rebecca’s Kindergarten class are enjoying their newly created ‘zoo’ role play area in their classroom. The children chose the idea of a zoo themselves to fit in with their current animal topic. They brainstormed ideas for what they might include and they created the maps, tickets, labels and craft animals that appear in the zoo. They are having great fun getting into role as different characters such as ‘receptionist’ or ‘zoo keeper’, developing their speaking and listening skills through play. Grade 2 Science Classification Keys
In Grade 2 Science lessons this term, the children have been learning about variation of plants and animals. They have organised them in groups according to their similarities, differences and unique characteristics. The children have done a fantastic job in creating their own classification keys about different animals. They answered questions about each of their animals using their keys. The animals were made using paper art.
Smoochie Smoothies Mother's Day
A great time was had by the preschool children and their mums at the “Smoochie Smoothie Mother’s Day” event! They started off their lovely celebration with the children singing two songs…”Friends, Friends 1,2,3, and “Way Up in the Sky”. Then Miss Evieann read the story “Oh Baby, My Little One” as each child nestled into their mother’s lap.
They continued their party offering strawberry and banana fruit smoothies that were shared with mother and child with two straws – delicious cookies were enjoyed as well!
After their tummies were full each child gave their mother a beach bag that they had decorated themselves as a gift for Mother’s Day.
A wonderful card was given to all the mums decorated with children’s “smooches” made with lipstick prints!
A very kissable and memorable time was had by all!
Our 200th Post!
This is the 200th post on our blog and to celebrate, let’s pass on some interesting facts about the number 200:
- 200 (two hundred) is the natural number after 199 and before 201.
- In Roman numerals it is written CC.
- 200 is the smallest base 10 unprimeable number – it can not be turned into a prime number by changing just one of its digits to any other digit.
- A denomination of the euro note.
- The sum of dollars given in the classical Monopoly game to a player passing Go.
- The year 200 was a leap year starting with a Tuesday.
Red and White for the TCI Red Cross Appeal
In support of the TCI Red Cross Appeal Week, we had a special ‘Red and White Dress Down Day’ and raised $117. The Red Cross is the world’s largest independent humanitarian and voluntary led organization. The purpose of this week is to raise the awareness of and raise funds for the Red Cross. The funds raised will help the Red Cross assist in preparation, response and recovery to emergencies. Some of the children also have designed posters for a competition and others attended the ‘Build a Red Cross Emblem’ Fun Day. Thank you to everyone who has helped support this worthy cause.
JK Mother’s Day Tea Party
‘Sunflowers’ was the theme for the Junior Kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea Party today. The children and mums performed to each other ‘ You are my Sunshine’ and ‘You are my Sunflower’ songs. The children also sang, “Welcome to our Tea Time’, ‘I Love Her and She Loves Me’ and ‘M-O-M-M-Y’.  A delightful tea, with homemade cookies, cakes and snacks was served, with each child giving their mum a teacup cookie that they had decorated for them to enjoy. The event linked in well with their topic on growth in which the children have learned all about plants. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tea party – what a lovely way to celebrate Mother’s Day!
Planting a Tree for Earth Day 2009
The theme for this year’s National Trust lead Earth Day celebrations was ‘A Green Generation”. We joined together with other primary schools on the island to participate in a tree planting ceremony at Cheshire Hall (a National Trust heritage site). We chose to plant a Jamaican caper seeding. When we had finished planting it we celebrated by chanting out “We’re green and we’re cool, at Provo Primary School” and each of us gave our tree a special hug! It’s great to think that in years to come we will all be able to visit our school tree and remember how we celebrated our awareness of the environment on Earth Day by planting it. Click here to download a movie of us planting our tree.
Play some fun Earth Day games here.
Easter Egg Hunt 2009
All the children from our Preschool to Grade 6/7 classes enjoyed our annual Easter Egg Hunt today. Many thanks to our dedicated PTA parents who helped organise this egg-citing egg-travaganza!
Grade 1s Investigate Layered Liquids
Have you ever heard the phrase ‘oil and water don’t mix’? Well, one of our Grade 1 students and his mum taught a Science lesson to his class this week that explored what would happen if you mixed honey, juice and oil. The children learned that these liquids don’t mix to make a solution.  They also explored if objects floated or sunk in the mixtures. The experiment was great fun, especially as the children got to work in partners and carry it out themselves. Pouring the liquids into the containers was a bit tricky and they discovered that they needed to pour it in very carefully. After shaking all the containers, it was amazing to see how the liquids had separated again at the end of the day. Click on to find out more about the science behind this phenomenon and to try out an online investigation.
Grade 3s Measuring in Science and Numeracy
The Grade 3s have been testing and measuring the strength of magnets in Science. They had to think of a way of making the tests fair by looking at the variables closely. They decided which variables they needed to change, and which variables needed to be kept the same? They did some individual and group recording of their experiments. Click here to have a go at an interactive online magnet experiment.
In Numeracy they have been looking at capacity. To practise their measuring skills they estimated what each container would hold, then they used the measuring equipment to help them to read millilitres and litres as accurately as possible. They did really well and it was lots of fun to explore this topic through practically exploration.
Grade 4 Pop-up Books
Grade Four’s Design and Technology project for this term has been all about ‘Pop-up’ books. They researched lots of different pop up books and then designed their own. The children wrote their own stories and then tried out different types of pop ups; flaps, steps, spirals, spinners and sliders. They enjoyed sharing them with each other and other classes and teachers. Some of the children read their books together with Miss Sian, our principal. She was very impressed with the quality of both the pop-up designs and the stories. She had lots of fun the opening flaps and pulling the sliders! Well done, Miss Helen and all the Grade 4s for all your hard work on this project. It is a great example of how Literacy skills can be taught through a creative purposeful approach. We are sure you’ll treasure these books for years to come.
Can We Change Places? Exploring Sculptures
Grade 3 looked at how they could enhance the outdoor environment by creating sculptures. After researching into different types of sculptures they worked collaboratively in groups working on their own designs. There was lots of discussion as to how they could incorporate everyone’s ideas and lots of problem solving going on. Each sculpture was very different and the ability to listen, work and co-operate with each other made each one a huge success. They were so proud of their achievements that some of the children even organised ‘sculpture tours’ so that other children in the school could experience and appreciate them to their potential. Well done Grade 3 for designing and making such wonderful interactive creations! Click on to see more photos of the sculptures being made and the final pieces.
Grade 6/7 Bridge Building Project
In term 1, we used kits to build 3 types of bridge: a Roman Arch bridge from clay ‘bricks’, a truss bridge using triangular sections and a suspension bridge.
In term 2, we did ‘The Bridge-Building Challenge.’
We were given 15 x 50cm lengths of 2mm square balsa wood.
We had to build a bridge:
* measuring 40cm long and 5 cm wide
* that weighed less than 100g
* let a model car freely roll across the ‘roadway’.
* support a mass of 2kg
All of our bridges passed, so . . . we added more mass until the bridges collapsed! Our 2 best bridges supported 7.5kg! See a slideshow of all our bridges and them being tested.
Preschool Pancake Breakfast
The Preschool children have been exploring the concept of food and learning about all its different varieties. Some of the questions we have focused on are… where does food come from… how do fruits and vegetables grow… what kinds of foods do we like, dislike, and how do we make food like cake, trail mix, soup etc…? The Pre-School has created a healthy foods cookbook which includes family recipes that each child enjoys to eat at home. These will be on sale at the school. Our food exploration was topped off with a Pancake Breakfast at Aqua restaurant. It was enjoyed by all – see us all in the photo above munching away! Many thanks to Joan and Clive for having us at their restaurant and also to all the parents who helped out to make this trip possible.
Raising Awareness on Healthy Eating
At Provo Primary we always encourage healthy eating as an important part of children’s education and we are grateful to Temika Handfield for coming into the school to highlight and inform us on a variety of healthy eating topics. Temika is a former parent of the school who is now studying food and nutrition at the Florida International University in Miami. As a part of her studies, she is researching parent’s perceptions of obesity in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I’d like to thank everyone who supported her today by taking the time to complete her questionnaire. We wish Temika all the best with her studies and future success.
A topic often raised by parents is… ‘Where can we find ideas for exciting and easy-to-prepare healthy snacks and lunches?’Â Our Preschool class is addressing this question by compiling a cook book of healthy recipes that they enjoy. We look forward to the publication of this in the near future and hope that their favourite healthy choices become yours, too.
In the meantime, a couple of great websites on healthy eating I can recommend are: Kids health by Nemours, one of the largest nonprofit organizations devoted to children’s health and Children’s Lunchboxes, a great BBC site with lots of ideas to try. Finally here are a few interactive games about healthy eating that your children might enjoy playing from the UK Food Standards Agency.  Happy healthy eating!
Chamber Musicians Play for Us
Today we were honored and delighted to listen to the sounds of Hayden and Gershwin, performed to us by a group of six classical musicians visiting from New York and Boston. The ensemble included two violins, a viola and a cello from the string family and a clarinet and a bassoon from the woodwind family. Each musician talked to us about their instrument and how it makes its sound. They then went on to play a variety of solos, duets and ensembles.  To help explain the layers of music, they likened it to the layers of a pizza. The bassoon was the crust, the viola the tomato sauce and two violins were the pepperoni and the cheese!  So next time you order pizza don’t be alarmed if your children mention classical music and start playing an air violin! We would like to thank all the talented musicians and also Tani Rydon and Amanyara Resorts for kindly bringing them to the school to share their wonderful sounds.
JK Ladies and Gentlemen’s Dinner
The Junior Kindergarten finished off their healthy eating topic today by enjoying a wonderful fine dining experience. The classroom was transformed into a beautiful restaurant with tables decorated with candles, flowers and each child’s own personal place setting. Soft music added to the ambience as the boys entered dressed in their best shirts with their homemade ties and the girls in their prettiest dresses and their homemade tiaras. On the exquisite four course menu was a cocktail of fruit punch, a green salad starter, a main course of grilled chicken breast with mashed potato and carrots and a delicious banana split dessert. It truly was a magnificent feast! The children throughly enjoyed the whole experience and took the opportunity to demonstrate their excellent table manners as they dined in style. Well done Mrs. Myrna, Mrs. Jenny and Mrs. Melissa for all your hard work, love and care and thank you to all the parents who helped, too. See a slideshow of photos.
Red Nose Day
Grade 6/7 thought they’d like to join in the fun of ‘Red Nose Day’. This charity event raises money for people in need in the UK and Africa. We have sent our photo to their website.
Early Years Sports’ Day 2009
Our Early Years classes, Preschool, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten, enjoyed their sports’ Day today. It was lots of fun! It all started with some popular circle games, that had the children, jumping, hopping, skipping and skating! Following this, each class demonstrated their games skills and teamwork with their own activities. Held at the nearby Graceway Sports Centre, lots of families and friends came to watch and cheer on the children together with the older children from the school. Click below to see a movie clip of the children in action. [Read more…]
