Once a month at Provo Primary School, we offer our children the chance to ‘dress down’ and have a non-uniform day in return for a donation of a dollar that goes towards a chosen charity. This November, we decided to ask our children to do something a bit different and donate a gift for the Provo Children’s Home. [Read more…]
JK – This is the House that Jack Built
Junior Kindergarten have been learning about families and homes. They did a project at home to build their own home. Look at all the wonderful individual designs in this slideshow. Well done, everyone. There are some amazingly creative homes and they look like they were a lot of fun to create together with your family.
Year 3 – 7 Sports Day 2009
Our Year 3 to 7 Sports’ Day was a huge success today with children demonstrating a range of athletic track and field skills, great sportsmanship and team work. From javelin and long jump to hurdles, sprints and relay races, all the children tried their individual best and had lots of fun. Thank you everyone who helped organize the event and to all of you who were able to attend.
Year 2's Delicious Fruit Smoothies
Year 2 made some delicious healthy fruit smoothies as part of our ‘Be Active’ Week.
Everyone had a turn at preparing the fruit and choosing what they would like in their own special smoothie recipe. They used the juicer to make it and then enjoyed drinking it down. Can you spot the smoothie moustache!
Thank you Jo for coming in and making these together with the children. Great fun and a super way to encourage healthy eating habits!
‘Be Active’ Week
This week we hosted our first ‘Be Active’ Week.
Our aim for the week was to raise awareness in school for the importance of being active. Children were encouraged to make an ‘Active Week Pledge’, promising to do or try something active during the week. Each class kept a record of all the fruit and vegetables that they have eaten for snack and lunch during the week. Most children live far away from the school but lots chose to stop on route and walk part of the way. Points were awarded for each class’ efforts and the class with the most points at the end of the week was recognised as ‘the most active’ class.
The week was a great success. It was great to see children, parents and teachers all making a special effort to challenge themselves to be more aware of their physical activity and to eat more fruit and vegetables.
Well done everyone!
Halloween Party 2009
Once again our Halloween Party was a haunting success and the costumes amazing. It was a great evening of fun. Here is a thank you message from our organisers, the Gypsy and Corps Bride:
A very big thank you to everyone, both parents and kids who helped to make this night a success.
We would like to thank you all for donating the fabulous prizes, candies, decorations, lights and much, much more for the Halloween party. We could not have done it without your help, in the day decorating the school beforehand, and on the night serving at the bar and the food stalls and with running the games. Thank you to Christal for the donation of the Pirates Rum and a special thank you to Chef Fritz for the delicious fried rice. Thank you to Juergen and Richard for helping with the Haunted House and the Friends of the Arts for lending us some of the decorations.
Thank you to Mrs. Stephanie for dealing with our emails and more and Miss Sian for letting us take over the school for the night. We appreciate the teachers for giving us their Saturday night to help with the games and also for making decorations with their classes – they were awesome! Thank you also to the Flamingo Park residents for making Trick-or-Treat possible.
And finally, a special thank to the Sunday morning clean up crew – you guys rock!
Hope you all had fun!
Greetings from the Gypsy and Corps Bride.
It’s ‘Orange and Black’ Dress Down Day!
On the last Friday of every month we have a ‘Dress Down Day. Everyone get the opportunity to not wear school uniform for the day. Sometimes there is a theme, sometimes it’s free choice. Everyone is encouraged to donate a dollar to participate. We use the money to support a local or international charity. The School Council is currently deciding what to collect the money for this year. This month’s Dress Down theme was ‘Orange and Black’ as it was so close to Halloween. Thank you everyone for your continued support.
Year 1 Enjoy Using Computer Technology
Across the curriculum, our two Year 1 classes are making full use of the computer technology available to them. They have used the computers and new eno interactive whiteboard (IWB) in the Year 1 adjoining classrooms. They have also visited the computer suite and used the computers and the IWB in there. See a slideshow of them busy at work.
In Numeracy, an interactive hundred square was projected onto the IWB. The children looked at number patterns and calculations on this. They used the IWB pen to click on the numbers and highlighted them in different colours.
In Literacy, they have looked on the Cbeebies website to learn how the ‘Magic Pen’ writes. They then wrote large letters and numbers using the IWB pen. Everyone also had the opportunity to use the IWB to draw a large picture. Developing gross motor control using the IWB is great fun!
In History they have used the Internet to find out about toys today and in the past.

Music and Scarves
Using a set of colourful scarves created a multi-sensory treat for both the Preschooler and Junior Kindergarten classes last week. They explored both colour and body movements as they enjoyed playing with the scarves while listening to music. Watch a slideshow of them in action.
A Busy Week for Year 5 in our ICT Suite and Library
Last week Year 5 spent lots of time in the ICT suite for various lessons. On Monday, they were busy taking meal orders for a fictional burger bar, and creating a spreadsheet to enter the data into and work out the class’s meal costs! On Wednesday they returned there in their geography lesson to research and ultimately produce a fact sheet about Miss Beki’s home town of London. At the end of the lesson she felt they knew more about it than her! They also had digital photography with Mrs Krys, looking at Photoshop and learning how it all worked!
Every Tuesday, Year 5 have a library session where they spend some time thoroughly looking at the fiction and non-fiction books our library has to offer and carefully selecting two for their week’s reading. It also gives Miss Beki a chance to hear everybody read and help the children select books that are suitable for them! This week we are hoping to put together some book reviews to be displayed!
Ring, Ring… the Telephone keeps ringing in Year 2!
Look out! The school telephone bill will be very high this month!
During this Literacy lesson the children were asked to express a ‘point of view’ while having a conversation on the phone. As well as putting their thoughts across they had to also listen carefully to what their partner was saying; beginning to learn the essential elements in the art of conversation, thinking and taking account of what others say. Well done Year 2 – this sure looked like a fun lesson!
World Teachers’ Day, A Message From Our Ministry Of Education

Year 3/4’s Collaborative Art
During our first week back at school children in Years 3/4 were thrown into the deep end and challenged to complete a Collaborative Art Project. They were asked to fill a display board by recreating an ocean scene.
Kindergarten are Great Critical Thinkers
Over the course of last week, the Kindergarten class read Hugh Lofting’s Travels of Doctor Dolittle as part of a shared reading/critical thinking skills workshop in Literacy. As well as answering questions, they also acted out several parts of the book. Here they are creating a bridge across the mountain.
Tttttt…Turtles!
Year 3 and 4 were very lucky last week to have Brian and Natasha come to talk to them and answer their many questions about sea turtles that live around The Turks and Caicos Islands.
Learning a range of P.E. Skills
From Athletics to Yoga, children throughout the school have enjoyed their first couple of P.E. sessions of the year. See a slideshow of the children learning and practising their techniques. Read on to learn more details on what they are learning.
Science Museum Physics Fun!
Launchball is a physics-based Flash game produced by the Science Museum in London.
It’s a great game that those of you who are familiar with ‘The Incredible Machines’ and ‘World of Goo” will really enjoy.
The aim of the game is to get a ball from a starting position to a ‘goal’ by placing additional blocks onto the grid-based screen. Blocks include springs, slopes, magnets, lights, mirrors and so on.
30 levels to complete and a create and share section, too. The challenge is on!
Learning Spanish
Mrs. Mary and Mr. David are teaching Spanish this year. They are following the units provided in the UK “Framework for Languages”.
The first unit is called Yo (All about me). In this unit children learn to greet others, say how they are and introduce themselves. They begin to respond to and ask questions about their name and age. They learn to count, read and write numbers. They discuss linguistic diversity within their class and learn that Spanish is spoken in many places around the world.
The framework ensures that children”s learning in each year group is guided through clear stages of progression and that they are challenged.
Teaching involves a wide variety of active learning and collaborative activities. The children explore and learn Spanish through games, songs and rhymes, simple conversations and role-plays activities, interactive whiteboard and computer activities and independent worksheets.
Here are a couple of fun websites to share at home: BBC Primary Spanish and Online Games Let us know if you find any others or have any good resources that we can use at school.
Well on our way to Healthy Eaters!
As a school we like to promote nutritious eating habits and at our playtime snack each morning, we encourage the children to choose to eat their healthy snacks first.
It was wonderful today to see so many children and teachers throughout the school with a wide variety of healthy choices. A big thank you to all our parents for supporting us in our endeavors to promote healthy eating.
See a slideshow of some of the healthy fruit and vegetable snacks that were being munched on and were caught on camera today!
A Happy First Day
What better way to sum up our first day back Provo Primary than looking at these smiley faces. Walking through the school today, it was truly evident that the children and teachers were excited to be back. New children settled well and old friends were pleased to see each other. The classrooms looked wonderful and the children were eagerly engaged in their first day back activities. At playtime, it was lovely to hear the familiar sounds of the steel drums and children happily at play in the playgrounds. A wonderful start to the new year!
Please take a look at our first day at school in the slideshows below. Some classes have more photos than others and I can’t promise you that everyone is in them, but it does offer you a glimpse into the day in the life of your child that I am sure you’ll be happy to see.
Early Years (Preschool, Jnr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten – Well done especially to all the 2 and 3 year old Preschoolers who had their first day ever at school today!
Congratulations to our Graduating students of 2009
On Friday 26th June, our six Grade 6 students graduated from Providenciales Primary School. Each student made a speech highlighting memories of their time at the school and they were presented with a diploma. Four of graduates will stay on at the school for Grade 7. One has chosen to go on to the British West Indies Collegiate School here on island and one is off to Buckingham, Browne and Nichols in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We wish them all well with their future endeavours.
Monkey Graduates Grade 3!
Monkey came to us from the Amazon rainforest. He has been with the Grade 3 children for two years and is a much loved and cherished member of the class. Last year in Grade 2, he learnt to read and to do multiplication and this year in Grade 3, he has learnt lots about writing stories and fractions. He completed all his end of year SATs – scoring well above average for monkeys his age! He had a glowing report, although he sometimes ‘monkeys around‘ in class and will need to work on this! He has successfully graduated Grade 3 and will be moving on up with the class into Grade 4 in September. Congratulations Monkey! He is especially looking forward to learning the steel drums with his new teacher, Miss Helen. Monkey works very hard during the school day, but after school and at the weekends when we are not about, he swings in the trees, eats bananas and plays with all the toys! See a slideshow of photos, taken mainly by some of the Grade 3s, of all the things that he gets up to when we’re not at school. Maybe next year he will have a new friend to play with. Miss Mani has thoroughly enjoyed having Monkey in her class and there is a rumor going around that there may be a new animal joining the Grade 3 class next year! I wonder what it will be?
Grade 6/7 Perform ‘The Lion King’
The Grade 6/7 entertained the school and their parents with two performances of their end of year production of ‘The Lion King’. Creating the show with help from some of their teachers, they worked hard together to write and learn their parts, choreograph their dances, and practise their singing and recorder playing. They displayed amazing acting, dancing, singing and musical talent and the audience was thoroughly captivated and entertained. Well done, everyone, a truly outstanding production! Watch highlights from the show in the movie above and see a slideshow of photos.
The Raft Race at the Fool’s Regatta
The day of the Fool’s Regatta raft race finally arrived and each team eagerly met at the beach with their raft to make their final preparations. As well as Fastest Raft, prizes were being awarded for Best Design and Best Spirit.
For the “Flame ‘n’ Go’s” team, tensions were running extremely high as they had not had the opportunity to test their boat in the water! Both other teams had completed their water trials earlier that week and were confident that they would float. It would all be down to race technique and speed across the water.
The race itself was extremely exciting and closely contested from start to finish. Watch the video above to see the outcome! Also, see a slideshow of some superb photos of the day with some fantastic close-ups of the raft race.
A big thank you to the team mentors for coaching and guiding the teams through the process, sourcing materials, and their much needed technical support. Reported by Mrs. Stefanie.
WIV 4, our local TV station, also made this report on the event.
