Year 3 Dolphins put their archaeologist hats on!

Discoveries from the past were found in the grounds of Provo Primary School (Secretly planted by Miss Mani).  Using gloves, spades, tweezers and magnifying glasses the children carefully extracted each artefact from its place.  How long had these artefacts been here?  Where did they come from?  Who did they belong to?  What can these artefacts tell us about life, characters or objects from the past?  Year 3 will be busy using this evidence to try to answer all of these questions.  What conclusions will the Dolphins make I wonder?

It’s already been a busy start to the new term in Flamingo Class! After welcoming each other back and catching up after our holidays, we were all eager to start thinking about our new topic. And what a lot of thinking we’ve done!

Our science themed topic focusses on the skeletal and muscular systems, and how these work together to help us to move and grow. We have already learned many of the names of the bones in our bodies and have started to discuss what job these bones do.

We also conducted a large science experiement to develop some very important scientific skills needed to make discoveries. Check out the pictures of our excavation project to see how carefully we observed, classified and identified a selection of bones.

Year 5/6 got super festive in the last week of term and cooked up a storm… a snowstorm!

The children spent a careful two days creating their melting snowmen masterpieces. They started by making cookie dough which then had to be refrigerated overnight. Once chilled the children set about moulding their snow puddles and cutting some festive cookie shapes. Finally they were able to ice them and add the melting marshmallows before adding an array of chocolate chips and other decorations to create a crowd of Melting Snowmen.

I’m sure that you won’t be surprised to hear that they didn’t stay melting for long!

This week in Year 1, we have been learning about reindeer. We have discovered that reindeer are part of the deer family. They are strong runners and good swimmers. Reindeer have white tails and necks. Their coats are brown and white. The fur of the reindeer turns a light colour in the winter and a darker colour in the summer. Reindeers are herbivores.  This means they eat plants. Reindeer live in very cold places such as Canada, Russia, Alaska and Scandinavia. We have been writing our very own fact sheets about Reindeer. We have been remembering to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We are hoping to catch a glimpse of Rudolph on Christmas Eve…

Year 5/6 have been working hard since September learning all about the impact Martin Luther King had on how we live our lives today. We have studied his life and the sacrifices he made and how he carried this all out peacefully.

As we have been studying how people in the past affect the way our lives are shaped today, we decided to take on a challenge. The children were given the task of choosing someone in the past who they felt had made an important difference. They then had to use their imagination to present in a vivid and persuasive way their findings on their chosen person to the rest of the class.

This term, Year 3 Dolphins have been so lucky to have parent and professional artist ‘Lotte’  doing lots of wonderful creative art with them.

The class were introduced the work of artist Hundertwasser.  They really enjoyed discussing what they could see in his paintings and were keen to create their own work using ideas they had seen – creating their own imaginary dream world.

With Miss Lotte, they talked about how Hundertwasser used colour, form, pattern and shape in his artwork to assist him in ‘expressing’ his thoughts.

In our Year 1 Osprey Class, we have been designing our very own superheroes.  We created a checklist of the qualities we expect to see in a superhero as well as a villain. We talked about what makes a superhero and a villain different.  We filled in our superhero’s details, including special powers and known associates. Then we drew a photo of our superhero thinking very carefully about what he or she looks like. We imagined our superheroes in different scenarios and thought about how they would react and what they do. We have created our very own superhero story, thinking very carefully about the beginning, middle and end. We are now beginning to sketch our scenes as a storyboard and then we will add our speech bubbles for our different characters at the end. We are looking forward to sharing our finished comic strips with you!
