Year 6 Investigate Air Resistance

yr-6-parachutes-oct-2013 (4)Year 6 carried out an investigation to observe exactly how air resistance slows down a moving object.

We have discovered that objects which move through the air experience the force of friction. This is called air resistance. Air resistance acts against gravity on falling objects making them slow down as they fall.

Parachutes are used to slow down the speed of the person or object suspended from the parachute. The parachute is affected by gravity and air resistance.

With this in mind, we got to work making a variety of parachutes. Using different materials cut to different sizes we worked enthusiastically to create a range of different parachutes. When the devising process was complete we headed outside to put the theories to the test.

School Community Bake Sale

k-bake-sale-sept-2013To complement and extend on our exploration of our “Building our classroom/school community” topic, the Kindergarteners wanted to develop the outside “village” space by adding more sand toys and kitchen cooking items. We decided to have a bake sale to raise money to buy these items. Year one also participated in the sale.

The bake sale was a great success with lots of smiley customers enjoying our delights.  All the children helped to count up the money and altogether we raised $230.  We look forward now to buying some new items and getting to play with them.

What a wonderful example of how academic learning can be meaningful and fun!

10th Anniversary Location Celebrations

Provo Primary’s Logo is a Pink Flamingo. In ancient Egypt, flamingos were symbols of the sun. Flamingos also symbolize beauty, balance and grace. We believe that Provo Primary Flamingos are sunny, beautiful, graceful and balanced, who with their beautiful plumage, attract attention wherever they go.
Our little student flamingos certainly attracted attention and made us very proud yesterday as they captivated the audience with their performances depicting Provo Primary’s evolution and Pink Flamingo; their rendition of “I Believe I Can Fly’’; celebrations of our surrounding sporting facilities; and in thanking our community members for their assistance with sports. Jnr Kindergarten Start Off The School Year With A ROAR!

jk-dinosaur-sept-2013 (2)On their first Day of school, the JK  listened to the story “How Dinosaurs go to School “.  Just like the dinosaurs in the story, the children were encouraged to learn about their manners, simple rules and routines and how to be a friend. During the first couple of weeks, the children then looked after their own dinosaurs and this  helped to remind them of the things they have to do at school.

Now, a few weeks into the term, the children (and their dinosaurs) are now confident in their learning environment.  They have all made new friends and are enjoying exploring all the centres and using them each day to support their learning.

ROAR !  Click on to see lots of photos of JK in their first couple of weeks of school.

New P.E. Equipment To Help Further Promote Healthy Lifestyle Choices.

new-pe-equipment-sept-2013Last year, after-school rugby and soccer clubs run by community and parent volunteers raised $1210 to further supplement our school P.E. equipment.   Thank you Jamie, Jen, Zoe and Janine for your time and efforts over the year.  The clubs were well supported and enjoyed by the children.  The PTA also helped us to purchase a field hockey set.   Thank you everyone.

All the new resources will enable us to continue to broaden our P.E. curriculum throughout the school, by offering a wide range of sports to appeal to different interests of our children.  They will also help us to  promote and instil a love of P.E. and the desire to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Following the success of the introduction of  handball last year to our invasion game units, we are excited this year to introduce field hockey and beach soccer.  Last year we also introduced squash to our net/wall game units and this was very popular with the children.

Read on to see all the new equipment we have brought…

Kindergarten/Yr 1 Bake Sale at 2:45 – 3:15pm Today

kindergarten-bake_sale-sept-2013Each Dress Down Day a class will have the opportunity to hold an activity for the whole school to enjoy.  This may be a fundraising initiative for a project in their class or simply a time to share or celebrate something special.

This month the kindergarteners are having a bake sale as part of their emergent curriculum topic “School is Cool: Building a community in our classroom and at Provo Primary”.  The class has been working together to improve the outside house area (they have named it ‘The village’).  They have decided that they need more outdoor materials for this play space.    They made a shopping list and presented it to Ms Alison and Miss Sian.  It includes cups, plates, pots, food, a tea party set with a teapot, a table for the kitchen and shovel and buckets to make sand castles.

They have planned the bake sale to raise money for these extra toys that they believe are important for the village play area.  I am sure donations of these toy items will also be gratefully received.  The Year 1 class has also joined in with the bake sale as they share the play areas with the Kindergarten class.

So when you come to pick up your child today, come ready for your senses to be enchanted by the wonderful array of baked goodies to tempt you and know that as you enjoy these, the Kindergarteners and Year 1s will be most thankful for your support.

Year 2 Interview Mrs Helen About Baby Owen

yr-2-miss-helen-sept-2013What a great first week we had in Ospreys!  As you all know we are learning about families this half term.  We started our new topic thinking about what we were like when we were babies and how much we have changed.  We began to start collecting questions about things we might ask a Mummy who had a new baby….and who should walk in?!  Mrs Helen and baby Owen!  What a surprise!

Join Us For Our 10 Year Location Celebration!

10years-300x200We cordially invite you to attend our assembly on Thursday 26th September at 2.15pm, during which time we will be celebrating being 10 years at our current location at Flamingo Park.  Join us for songs, steel pans, poems, cake and more!

In total, the school has been in operation for 22 years so it won’t be long before we’re celebrating our silver anniversary!

Regardless of whether or not you are able to attend, we would appreciate that if you are a Provo Primary alumni family, a past teacher or a current attendee that could share with us a couple of sentences describing memories of your time at Provo Primary, either as a parent or student, to be displayed in our entrance way.  Please email these to us by 25th Sept.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you next week.

Year 3’s Place Value Snakes

yr-3-snake-place-value-sept-2013-1Year 3 Dolphins have been having a hiss-terical time with their ‘Place Value Snakes’.  They have been used to asss-ist them in identifying the value of digits in 3, 4 and sometimes even 5 digit numbers.  Each counter you drop into a snake’s hole stands for one value in that place. For example, two counters in the ‘tens’ hole stands for two tens, or 20. Three counters in the ‘thousand’ hole stands for 3 thousands or 3000. Such clever snakessss , such clever Dolphins too!

Back To School PTA Beach Get Together

FamilyBeachParty--sept-2013The thunder subsided and the rain held off for a very well-attended Beach Day this past Saturday afternoon.   The beach in front of Ricky’s Flamingo Cafe was the perfect spot for parents to escape the sticky weather and socialize while the kids played soccer, boogie boarded, jumped from the pier and swam like fish with new and old friends.  Families reluctantly began to pack up only as the sun went down and early bedtimes beckoned their extremely sandy and tired children!

New PTA Purchases Enhance Learning Opportunities Across The School!

pta-thank-you-sept-2013At the end of the summer term, the PTA allocated over $6000 to help the school purchase a variety of wonderful new equipment and resources which will enhance the teaching and learning of all the children across the school.  All the children, parents and staff would like to thank the huge number of people and organisations who generously supported our fundraising events last year, allowing us to work together to improve the educational experience of all Provo Primary Students.  Click on to read more about how the money was spent…

2nd Annual TCI International Coastal Clean-up, 2013

beach-clean-up-sept-2013 Take the pledge to help turn the tide on ocean trash – mark your calendars, set your alarms and give 30 minutes of your time for a place that gives you hours of enjoyment throughout the year.

The Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) will be once again spearheading a Coastal Clean-up in support of the Ocean Conservancy-led International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Be there at 7am at the Children’s Park in the Bight, this Saturday  21 st September .  Bring gloves and a bags if possible.

Over half a million volunteers participated around the world, covering a distance of nearly 18,000 mile, collecting over 10 million pounds of rubbish!

Last year in Provo, we collected 63 bags of trash, consisting of beer cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, cans and other general debris.  Myself and two Provo Primary families joined in the effort of this initiative.  This year we hope that many more teachers and families will support the event.
