Postponed from last week, due to inclement weather, the Jingle Jam is rescheduled for Thursday 12th December.
We’re sure you’re looking forward to a very merry start to the Christmas season!
Starting at 4pm – until 7pm, come along to get a photo of your little one with Santa 🎅 and yourself a little mulled wine 🍷 other activities include… a festive crafts table ~ plenty of tasty reindeer treats ~ a toddler dance party with all the best cheesy Christmas tunes! It doesn’t get any better!
Under 5 years (older siblings may attend) $5 for every attendee (those under 1yr go free!)

Provo Primary children amazed their audiences again this year with another of their incredible holiday productions.

Year 8 Physics: Transfers of Energy demonstrations

So, as it turns out, it’s hard to imagine what elastic potential energy is. It’s hard to know when gravitational potential energy has given way to kinetic energy. And it’s even harder to conceptualise how these energies are transferred between objects all around us, all the time, everywhere we look! As one student put it, “physics is confusing!”
However, by conducting hands-on demonstrations of difficult concepts it is much easier to build understanding. No amount of diagrams or book-based explanations could replace the understanding that emerges from experience, experimentation and practical examples.
And so, with this in mind, Year 8 have set about conducting a range of experiments that demonstrate energy transfers. We wanted to share our experiment from this week with you.
Inspired by the wonder of a Newton’s Cradle in class, Year 8 set about observing the transfers of energy that occur in falling and colliding objects. Take a look at our video to see our amazing results and see how this helps us to observe transfers of energy in action.
Suddenly, by looking at a slow motion video of a basketball bouncing, it is quite easy to see, describe and explain the transfer of elastic potential energy into kinetic energy.
Mindful Walks and Drawing both bring a sense of Perspective.

Y5 have been enjoying mindful walks and pauses alongside the canal when we need to refocus and re-energise. As part of a set drawing skills lessons we have also been thinking about how to incorporate perspective and three dimensional aspects. The children have found that they can do things that they didn’t believe they could as well as finding the whole process very relaxing.

We have rocks that remind of us outer space, deserts and oceans full of bubbles. We have rocks that tell us that they love fluffy things! We have rocks that make us feel happy on the inside and amazing on the outside. We even have rocks that feel smooth like ice-cream – yum!

As you may already have heard Jingle Jam is fast approaching – our annual Early Years Christmas party is always a lovely way to kick off the festive season and a great way for parents to mingle, enjoy a mince pie and get that coveted Santa photo in a relaxed toddler friendly environment!
This year it falls on Thursday, December 5th so mark it in your calendars! Just $5 entry (under 1yr goes free) tickets on the door.

Celebrations in Year 1

This half term Year 1 have put their party hats on and started learning about many of the festivities and celebrations that take place around the globe. Our Year 1s are having a bundle of fun in our role play corner that has been set up to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali this week. We have been mindfully creating Rangoli patterns and carefully writing party invitations in Literacy to celebrate the festival of light and prosperity.

Do you Remember, remember the 5th November?
The SK children learned a little bit about what is special about this date before our Bonfire Night party at Bay Bistro. We talked about how to stay safe by not going near the fire and standing back to watch the fireworks. We talked about how fireworks are used to celebrate other festivals and events such as Diwali – the festival of light, 4th July, the start of a New Year in many countries, weddings and even special birthdays.
The children thought about all the warm colours that they would see in the bonfire and they used these colours to create a wonderful display of red, orange and yellow stripy paintings. It really brightens our classroom up and makes us feel happy.
We then focused on the beautiful firework display that goes along with the bonfire.
National Heritage Month: Provo Middle School head to the field to study our Islands’ heritage.

National Heritage month is always a busy one at Provo Middle School. We believe it is important to see and experience the varied remains of our Islands’ heritage in order to appreciate the past. This year, students in our Year 7 and 8 classes set out on a number of field trips linked to their learning on the Turks and Caicos Islands’ salt and cotton industries.
Year 7 first visited the national museum to understand the significance of the Salt Industry, which operated here for around 300 years.
The success and importance of this industry led to population growth on the islands, as well as creating tension between neighbouring islands who wanted to gain control of this profitable export. We learned how the Turks Islands were perfect for the production of natural salt, produced through solar evaporation, direct from our oceans.

Waving their positive affirmation flags, excitedly, Year 3’s support really encouraged our Year 6, 7 and 8 students, as they determinedly found the energy and endurance to keep going in the final laps of their Fun Run yesterday. Here’s what Year 6 wanted to pass on back to them:

It’s UN World Children’s Day Today

This United Nations World Children’s Day, we’re asking every child to tell the world how they’d change the world. Whatever issue you’re passionate about, from equality to the environment to education, World Children’s Day is the time to have your say on how you’d change the world for the better.
World Children’s Day, which is celebrated annually on 20th November, is to raise awareness of and support children’s welfare across the globe.
This year is extra special as it marks 30 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child – 30 years of child rights that have helped transform children’s lives around the world.
Middle School Film Festival video catches the eye of judges!

Providenciales Middle School recently enjoyed producing video entries for this past weekend’s inaugural International Film Festival High School competition.
We congratulate all students for their creative entries and powerful poetry, set to film, that they produced. We were especially proud that one of our student projects was chosen to receive an Honorable Mention in the competition, with the happy child picking up a cool $100 prize!
Our project brought the International Film Festival’s theme, Oceans and Environment, to life by giving nature a voice. Children wrote poetically from the point of view of Mother Nature, speaking about the challenges that face our planet with particular reference to human activity.
Maths learning is fun with Mathletics!

Our Year 1 to Year 6 class are enjoying a free trial of Mathletics – an online Maths platform with interactive activities, games and challenges. Classes are exploring this in school and login details are being sent home so that you can trial it at home too.
We have successfully used Mathletics in the past for a number of years. It can be accessed in a web-based format on a computer or in an App (make sure you download the new app if you installed it prior to June 2019)
The QR code login is a great new addition to the app, along with the really handy off-line option. Mathletics live is a fun and interactive way to help improve students’ maths fluency and mental maths skills. Many children love competing in Live Mathletics against one another or against children across the world – all in an internet safe way.

Today is World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day is observed annually and in 2019 is falls on 13 November.
It’s a day designated to pause and consciously reflect on times when we have been shown kindness, and think about ways in which we can treat others kindly.
What’s your favourite way to spread kindness?
It doesn’t have to be huge or showy; in fact, sometimes showing our children how little changes can make big differences is the most impactful.
Have a lovely World Kindness Day and spread smiles!

Poppy Day 2019 – What does peace mean?

On 11th November, Remembrance Day, we talked about remembering, showing respect and honouring the brave people who have helped to keep us safe and have made where we live the safe and peaceful place that it is today. We all deserve to live in peace.

One way to show respect on Remembrance Day, or Poppy Day, as we sometimes call it, is to wear a poppy to show respect and remember soldiers and other people who have helped us in our lives.
Tarsia Puzzles in Year 6

In Year 6 we have started our new fractions topic in Maths. This week we have been working on equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and problem solving.
On Wednesday, Miss Iman challenged us to a tarsia puzzle; with collaboration and communication we were all able to solve it!
Bonfire Night at Bay Bistro- Provo Primary’s 9th year!

The Flamingo class had a fun filled evening celebrating Bonfire Night at Bay Bistro. This was a wonderful end to a week’s learning in school about this true, macabre story and we would like to express our thanks to Clive Whent for hosting this event.
For a couple of children, this was their first ever bonfire night and they will have happy memories for many years to come. There were some surprise firecrackers hiding inside Clive’s Guy who towered above the Y4’s Stuart version.
The class researched previous Guy Fawkes effigies before deciding to make a life-size model of their own. Each child contributed to a part of his body or clothing and donations came from home, the garden, other teachers and even the Salvation Army!

Our Fun Run fundraiser kicks off next week! We love that there will also be leadership and character lesson portion this year – the leadership theme:

will take students on an exciting journey as they learn what it takes to be a game changing leader!

Year 2 have ended their mid term topic of ‘Brains, Bodies and Bones’ by examining how to keep a healthy brain – a good nights sleep, hydration, exercise, less screen time and healthy eating all being the best ways in which to do this.
So how does healthy eating affect your brain? We knew that unhealthy foods could affect our concentration, our ability to focus and sometimes even our energy levels. So, we decided to put our knowledge to the test. We would investigate how eating unhealthy foods and healthy foods would impact us when completing different tasks.
It is a Gym Thing!

How lucky are we? Years 2, 3 and 4 were fortunate attend a special introductory session at the newly opened Provo Gymnastics Academy, Downtown. They climbed ropes, balanced on beams, made bridges on floor work and tried their hand at somersaulting from a bar.
The coaches got them warmed up and busy for 90 minutes non-stop. They each had a fabulous morning using their ‘observation and listening’ skills to build on their balance, co-ordination, flexibility and strength.
Thank you to Denver and Shin, the two professional coaches, who worked with them. Check out the photos to see how much fun they all had!
And let’s not forget that in our Literacy Letterland learning energetic, Gentle Ginger helps us to read and spell the word ‘gymnastics’ and other words like magic, huge, age and giant!
Heritage Day Table Displays

Classes from Kindergarten to Year 8 shared information and activities on our picnic benches in celebration of National Heritage Day – Monday 14th October and Heritage Month. Before this Years 3-6 presented some performances on the stage.
South Caicos SFS Outreach – Marine Plants – Fall 2019

Continuing our special connection with the South Caicos School for Field Studies, a group of visiting students came with 4 activities to teach our Years 3-7 all about the question…
Why are marine plants important to coastal and open ocean habitats of the TCI?
Through games, quizzes, and presentations, together they looked closer at different coastal habitats…sandy and rocky shores, mangrove and salt ponds, seagrass meadows and coral reef. They linked animals that lived in each habitat and learned about the invasive Sargassum algal.
It was a wonderful morning of activities, with both young and older students gaining much from the interaction. Thank you SFS – we are so fortunate that you continue to come and visit. We look forward to seeing you again in April with more knowledge to share.
