It’s all out and about in Year 1 and 2’s Outdoor Education P.E. this term

yr-1-2-outdoor-ed-pe (11)Teamwork, communication, patience and cooperation are just some of the skills Year 1 and Year 2 have been putting into practice this term.  More specifically, we have been using them in our joint Outdoor and Adventurous Education P.E. lessons.  Year 1s and 2s were put into mixed groups and given the task of completing a 2D birds-eye view of our very own school, Provo Primary School.  Miss Tracy and Miss Claire had already drawn in the buildings, but which way up did the map go?  Which building was which?  Where was all the outdoor equipment?

Year 3 and 4 Create Beautiful Turtle Paintings

yr-3-4-turtl (1)A HUGE thank you to local artist Lucie Winton-Stubbs, from Diftwood Studios, for coming in to help create these beautiful paintings together with our Year 3 and 4 children.   What a multitude of skills and techniques were taught as she carefully took them through the process step-by-step.  I think you will agree that she encouraged oodles of artistic flair and talent to be creatively released onto the canvas. Aren’t they wonderful?!  Look closely and you will see lots of individual details – just like their creators, there are many similarities and yet they are unique in their design!

More in-depth learning about turtles in KS2

ks2-turtle-week-april-2016 (5)‘Turtle Week’ was a busy, fun and turtley exciting week in KS2.  We are very grateful to Miss Katharine and Mrs. Amy  from DEMA and Miss Jackie from Amanyara Nature Discovery Centre for sharing their vast knowledge and for creating such a wonderful collection of fun and exciting turtle activities!

“I felt the turtle activities were really fun and made me really happy,” said BD.

“I learnt that leatherbacks have collapsible lungs so that they can dive deep,” commented ED.

“I enjoyed Turtle Week because it raises awareness of the turtle situation, especially here in the T.C.I.,” added JW.

We started ‘Turtle Week’ first thing Monday morning with a superbly informative talk by Miss Katharine Hart (DEMA) about the current situation of turtles in the world, their life cycle and the different species. Then after break the children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in a round-robin of activities on the benches and field with Miss Katharine, Mrs. Amy (DEMA) and Miss Jackie (Amanyara.)

We have discovered many facts about our teeth. For example, did you know we have two sets of teeth during our lifetime – deciduous teeth and permanent teeth; unlike sharks whose teeth renew forever and ever!

Superb Spring Inter-Island U12 TAG Rugby Competition

tag-rugby-comp-april-2016 (3)Last Saturday morning saw Provo Primary school take part in the Spring Inter-Island U12 tag rugby competition. With tag rugby being such a popular sport on the island and interest from all schools at an all-time high, it was no surprise that Provo Primary could enter two teams: Provo Thunder and Provo Hurricanes.

With competition at such a level, Provo Thunder and Hurricanes instantly realised that they had to use all the skills they have mastered during tag rugby club as well as a strong sense of team work and communication. Both teams played exceptionally well against really well-organised and disciplined teams

Happy Earth Day from our Preschool Lorax Lovers!

ps-lorax-april-2016-(17)“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees….. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

The children have been enjoying books by Dr. Seuss as part of their topic, Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think. Last week we looked at the book, The Lorax. It is a perfect introduction to Earth Day and our local wildlife environmental week about turtles. We discussed several ways we can help take care of our Earth. The children may be little but it is never too early to make them aware of ways in which they can help take care of our environment. [Read more…]

Provo Performing Arts’ Video – What do you Mean?

PPA-WhatDoYouMean from Provo Performing Arts School.

Provo Performing Arts  School’s Easter Camp was a brilliant success.  Take a look at their amazing Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean’ video that they created, in association with Eyespice Photography.  Throughout the project, the students explored and developed their knowledge and skills in choreography, dance, directing, acting, singing, voiceovers, costumes and make-up.    Well done to all of the performers and to director, Niki, too.  What fantastic talent all round…  it certainly looked like it was lots of fun too!

Do you love to dance and perform… do you wish you had been in this video?  Provo Performing Arts School is affiliated to Provo Primary School and classes run daily after school.  Take a look at the Provo Performing Arts schedule for this term classes and look out for future Camp activities.

Year 2 are definitely not ‘dragon’ their feet in our poetry lessons

yr-2-dragon-poetry-march-2016This week Osprey class have become poets and used the story of ‘George and the Dragon’ as their inspiration… well, the dragon in particular. After painting and decorating our own dragons, we used them as our focus for a variety of different poetry styles.

We first wrote poems using descriptive language, in particular similes. Did you know a simile is when you compare one thing to another? When you read our poems you will spot them as quick as lightning.

After that we used our senses to describe our dragons…we thought about what we would see, hear, smell, feel and taste if we met a real life dragon.

And then finally we thought about the dragon we sometimes feel ‘inside of us’ and how we would describe it.

We hope you enjoy reading our poems and please do pop in to see the rest of our work.

Well done to all of our prize winners – all of whom were naturally eggstatic!

Word play at this time of year is always a joy to eggsplore!  Shel Silverstein clearly was eggsited by this when creating the poem below, which one of our Year 3’s brought to me to share…

Our Wonderful Spring Bonnets and PTA Egg Hunt

eyfs-bonnet-parade-2016-(10What an amazing selection of Spring Bonnets we saw today at our annual EYFS Spring Bonnet Parade.

Thank you to all of our EYFS families for doing such a wonderful job of creating the bonnets.  It takes some skill balancing and sticking eggs, nests, chicks, flowers on a hat and creating bunny ears that stay upright – a great example of a STEM learning activity at home for both adult and child to work on together! What creative families we have!  The bonnets were fantastic!

As is tradition, the children participated in a short parade around the school in front of cheering and clapping parents, friends and older students.
