Provo Primary’s famous PTA Movie Night is back! Come join us next Friday night, Feb 24th, at 5pm.
Children 5 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. Movie will start around 5:30pm and pick up is 7pm SHARP. However, please feel free to drop by a bit earlier to get a good seat and some goodies.
Kindergarten and Year 2 have been learning all about Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year was on January 28th. It’s been very interesting finding out about ‘The Spring Festival’ and we’ve really delved into learning about how dragon dances, red envelopes, firecrackers, lanterns and Nian are important to Chinese New Year.
We’ve swept and cleaned the classroom to put away old things, bid farewell to the old year, and welcome the New Year, brought good luck to our classes by turning our door red and making red and gold decorations that hung above our doors and even acted out the Chinese New Year story!
As a culmination to our learning, Kindergarten and Year 2 joined together to have a joint Chinese New Year party, where the children explored eating with chopsticks (many for the first time!) and tried authentic Chinese food, made by their parents. A lovely time was had by all!
Thank you so much to Jeff and Ginny for entertaining us today with a special valentine puppet show about friendship, sportsmanship, and forgiveness.
The cast of characters included Rudy and Risky Rabbit, Leo the Lion, and a nasty witch with a mean green face! The show took place in the “Friendly Forest” as Rudy and Risky were getting ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Wanting to play a game and needing another friend to join them, they asked Leo and that’s when the trouble started…!
We also learnt and sang some special love and friendship songs together.
Keen puppeteers, Jeff and Ginny were Founders and Directors of the Sundance School located in New Jersey for nearly 40 years. Visiting Provo, it was very kind of them to bring down their puppets to share their story with us all. The photos of the children’s faces as they watched will clearly show you just how much they all enjoyed the show. It was lovely to the children entranced and to hear them giggle and laugh at the humour. A wonderful show. A huge thank you to our new, big-hearted, friends, Ginny and Jeff. We hope to see you again another time, soon.
Earlier in the year, children in Year 4 explored language and poetry techniques in their literacy lessons. Inspired by Conservation International’s Nature is Speaking campaign, pupils attempted to use powerful and evocative language to personify the ocean and its feelings. We then also created acrostic poems that tried to describe the movement of the ocean. I think you’ll agree, the ideas and language that came out of these poetry sessions were really dramatic!
Flamingo Class then set about publishing videos of these spoken poems by editing voice recordings, still images and video clips in MovieMaker. We hope we enjoy our two compilations.

If you wish to make a donation or want to help work the table, please let us know in the office. Baked goodies are best to bring first thing or preferably near to lunchtime or in the afternoon (Fridge space is limited).
This week in Kindergarten we got to enjoy our first experience of yoga. With relaxing music playing in the background, we followed Ms. Shara as she showed us breathing exercises to calm our heart rate. Then with careful explanation and instruction, we practised child’s pose, cat, down dog, cobra and pigeon.

We are enjoying it so much that we are trying to practise yoga first thing in the morning so we are relaxed and focused ready for the day ahead. [Read more…]
Safer Internet Day 2017 is coming up this week on Tuesday 7th February!
The theme is…’Be the change: Unite for a better internet‘,
At Provo Primary School, the children will be involved in a variety of class and mixed-class activities and will create information posters for parents to see how they have become more aware of the positive and negative aspects of Internet technology and device use.

Here at Provo Primary we are very proud of our Spanish Language programme and we want to make sure that our parents know just how fantastic it is, the progress their children are making and just how much they can do in Spanish!
One of the ways we hope this will be made clearer is through the introduction of our Language Passports. These have also been created to help the children see just how much progress they make from year to year and to keep track of any areas they need to work on.
The passport is made up of ‘can do’ statements which the children colour in when they feel they can carry out the statement, and have shown this understanding to the teacher. This allows the children to self-assess their ability and the teacher to understand where the children need help and where they are confident.
We will be launching the passports after half-term to Years 1-3 to start with to see how they work. Please feel free to ask Miss Cara or Mrs. Yorka to see your child’s ‘Passport to Spanish’.
Today is World Wetlands Day (2nd Feb).
Join the DECR team to clean-up and plant mangroves at Wheeland Pond in Blue Hills this Saturday (4th February) at 8am. All are invited to help conserve this important local wetland habitat.
Two years ago, our School Council joined a team of other local school children to plant mangroves at Wheeland Pond together with Amy Avenant, the DECR Outreach Coordinator. Last year, our current Year 5s learnt about mangrove habitats, and how they CAN and have to help to conserve these for the future… Why are our mangrove systems so important? How do these work in unison with the coral reefs? And what would happen to our island if the mangroves aren’t protected. Amy Avenant from DEMA took the children on a trip to the mangrove system on Flamingo Lake. With her expertise guidance, they observed and learnt about these amazing habitats close up.

A BIG, BIG thank YOU and a HUGE well done to all student, parents, teachers and friends of Provo Primary. Through the PTA Movie Night ($638) and the School Council Hats for Haiti Dress Down Day ($174), we have managed to raise a staggering $812. How fantastic is that!
The amount is being donated to the ‘Hope For Haiti’ Charity that assists the children that suffered most, during the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. For more information about the charity go to HopeForHaiti.com

When we had finished reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood, we began to wonder how the poor old wolf felt. He always seems to be portrayed as the wicked, mean and nasty character in the story. But was he really so mean?
During our earlier MindUp/P.S.H.C.E session we had just been talking about the importance of having an ‘open mind’ and the value of being able to sometimes take on a different perspective, especially during problem solving. We talked about how ‘perspective’ allows us to consider more than one way of understanding a behaviour, event or situation.
So how did the wolf really feel to make him act in such a way?
We decided to think of other words that could describe other feelings the wolf may have had. Thesaurus’ were used to find alternative words to describe these feelings. Eventually we got to the really FUN part. In our ‘feelings’ groups, using our body language, tone of voice and our facial expressions we acted out the story. But this time from the possible wolf’s perspective!

We kicked off our J.K. Science topic this term with colour mixing! The children were mesmerized and enjoyed predicting what colour the paper towel might turn. We mixed red with blue, yellow with blue and yellow with red.
While waiting for the towels to absorb the coloured water, the children were keen to record what they saw by drawing the experiment. The next day, everyone was excited to see how the colours had mixed and reflected on their predictions from the day before. Well done JK!
Recently, we were very privileged to have a Hummingbird family come and make their home in a tree in our Early Years playground.
Despite the busyness of outside playtime, the mother Hummingbird built a beautiful nest and laid an egg. We were so excited to see that the egg had hatched into a baby, and while the mother always let us know she was close and keeping and eye on us, we were lucky enough to watch the baby growing in its nest before it grew big enough to fly off on its own.
The children loved to be lifted up to check on the baby’s progress (from a respectful distance of course), and enjoyed learning all about the life cycle of a baby bird.
Whilst we all missed our playground friend once it had flown its nest, we were pleased to have provided a safe place for a fledgling hummingbird to find its wings, just like we do for all our own Early Years ‘fledglings’!
Every last Friday of the month is ‘Dress Down Day’. Funds that we raise are passed on to the school council to decide how to use. Funds that are raised in Term 1 are allocated to a global need, Term 2 a local need and Term 3 a school need. There was much debate as to where the Term 1 funds would go. Where could we as a school help make a difference?
Usually we help charities that support children, but an older member of the School Council suggested helping animals and this created a buzz of interest. Class discussions took place, research began and we discovered the animal charity called Born Free. Contact was made and we discovered that we had raised enough funds for each class from Years 2 to 6 to adopt an animal, from the wild, for a whole year.
The Turks and Caicos Library Service will be celebrating library week during January 23rd – 27th, 2017 to help promote the programmes and services offered by the organization.

As part of our new ‘Helping Hands’ topic in Toddler Class, we spent the week looking at the story of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. We learnt from the Rainbow Fish’s experiences that it can be fun to share with our friends. In our games, we enjoyed taking it in turns to catch fish of all the colours of the rainbow. In our creative activities, we really liked passing our friends the silvery scales they needed to finish their Rainbow Fish creations, and working together to craft a big Rainbow Fish with beautiful textures and colours. We are looking forward to a half term of caring, sharing, collaborating and appreciating all the people who help us. What a great way to swim into a fantastic new year of learning!

Happy New Year and welcome back to our Provo Primary Spring Term. Spending time in all of the classes over these first few days, it has been lovely to feel that sense of ‘happy to be back’, and to see all of the children ‘springing’ into action and quickly settling back to school life and being eager to start new learning topics
It’s a joy to see friends sharing news of the festive holidays, hearing about the gifts given and received and news of holiday travels and family gatherings.
We welcome all of the new families to the school and look forward to getting to know them, along with greeting some returning families who have been away and are now here with us again.
We wish everyone a year of wonderful moments, enriching opportunities, treasured memories and all of the blessings that a heart can know.
Santa arrived to the joy of all at Provo Primary, in style as usual, on the local fire truck! Greeting Santa in this way has been a Provo Primary tradition for what we think could be as long as 13 years. And it is still very much loved by all of today’s students, just as it has been for every year gone by.
We would like to pass on a HUGE thank you to the Turks and Caicos Fire Service for helping out over the years.
Here are some of our youngest students – meeting Santa for the first or second time here at Provo Primary, to our oldest students – for whom this tradition is still very much a special time.
The highlight of National Heritage month for us all in Year 1 and 2 was our fantastic Maskanoo Parade. We had a lot to do to prepare for an extravaganza such as Maskanoo. We made colourful masks and hats with Ms. Tracy. This involved painting them very bright colours and decorating them with sequins and feathers. Can you spot who is who in our parade photos? We are very well disguised so it is very tricky, look carefully!
In our previous Year 1 blog, we introduced you to Flat Stanley.
The Year 1 children had to choose a relative or friend to send their Flat Stanley to. They asked their parents to help them find out the address of this person. Each child then wrote a letter to their chosen person explaining what they would like them to do with Flat Stanley when he stays at their house.
The children carefully wrote the address on their envelope, they had to do this very neatly so that the mailman or mailwoman could read it. Take a look at the photos to see some of their beautiful writing. Great job, Year 1! There was a lot to think about…from forming each letter correctly, to sizing our letters, to sitting the letters on the line and even making sure the address was written correctly so that it would be delivered to the right house in the right country!
Our biology strand of science concluded this term with Year 6 students presenting a research project based upon the areas of extinction and endangerment within our animal kingdom.
Year 6 were posed with the challenge of selecting four extinct animals and four animals who are on the endangered animals list. After making their selections they had to carry out research using both traditional and digital resources to find out information about their selections.
The extinct section of the project examined theories presented by scientists to determine why extinction occurred for certain species; descriptions of how extinct animals looked when they roamed the earth; and environments and adaptations relevant to their survival when they lived.
