As a culmination of all the events in our Keeping Healthy week, Years 3-6 set off for Sports Day at the Athletics track! All children competed in teams, collecting the greatest score possible for their groups by either running, jumping or throwing for victory! After developing our Athletics skills throughout the past 6 weeks, the children were able to show off their newly acquired skills in the hurdles, long jump, triple jump, discus, javelin, and shot put.
KS2 Athletics Sports Day 2011
Achieving Personal Bests in KS2 Athletics
In KS2 (Years 3 – 6), our Athletics P.E. programme aims to provide enjoyable and stimulating activities and challenges based on the core actions of walking, running, jumping and throwing.
Children are encouraged to set and achieve goals for the improvement of personal or team performances. Each session, the children record their results in their ‘Personal Best Record Booklet’. They enjoy seeing how they are improving and it adds a positive competitive element that encourages them to develop an interest in further developing their skills. These booklets have been a big hit and they are really helping to boost each child’s self-esteem. Ask your child to share their personal record with you and see how they are improving.
We would like to thank parent volunteers, Haley and Katrina, for capturing these athletics moments for us to share with you. Look out for future photos of our hurdles, triple jump, discus and relay sessions and we look forward to seeing you at our KS2 Sports Day on Friday 21st October – 9:15- 10:45am at the National Stadium Athletics Track.
Congratulations to our Graduating Year 6’s students of 2011.
As another school year comes to an end, we must say a sad but excited farewell to our nine Year 6 students.
Sad, because they have progressed through some or all of their primary years at Provo Primary and have given the school so, so many fond memories; excited because they leave for their next adventure-secondary/high school- the next step towards adulthood!
Their end was celebrated in style with a Graduation ceremony full of laughs and memories; tears and joy. It began beautifully with…
“I am” Poetry
Miss Bonnie introduced an ‘I am’ writing frame to our year 4 – 6 children. Here are some reflective poems written by Rahim, Millie, Amanda and Grace.
I Am Rahim
I am an imaginative boy who likes to dream,
I wonder if the world is ours, free for us to take,
I hear the sounds of achievement ringing in my ears,
I see characters popping out of fantasies and books,
I want to be able to dream away for hours and hours on end,
I am an imaginative boy who likes to dream…
Did you know a Squid had a Beak?
Following an introductory lesson on cephalopods with a focus on squid, the Year 4/5 and 6 classes participated in a hands-on squid dissection lesson.
As the dissection progressed, the children were able to identify major external and internal features and organs of a squid and to explain their functions. The children were particularly excited to extract the squid’s beak, its eye lenses and its remnant shell (called a pen). They then used the pen and some squid ink to write a message!
The children absolutely loved the experience and would like to thank Mrs. Bonnie and Mr Joel for teaching them about cephalopods and for leading the squid dissection.

Year 6 White Water Rafting!
Wow – the Year 6 look like they were making a splash while white water rafting on the Chattooga River in North Carolina. Take a look at their faces in the Photos as they paddle the raging torrents and enjoy the breath-taking scenery. It sure looks like it was an exciting ride!
Year 6 Climbing to New Heights in NE Georgia
Year 6 class are in the mountains of NE Georgia, USA this week for their end of year field trip.
It is a real outdoor adventure, full of activities, include white water rafting, a trip to Cherokee to learn about the Native American Indians, Gold mining and a range of climbing and hiking activities.
What a great way to celebrate the culmination of their primary education here at Provo Primary.
We look forward to hearing all about their adventures, next week on their return, but in the meantime you can see what they are up to by visiting this Photo Gallery.
Year 6 Baking Bread in DT
Year 6 started their Design Technology topic on making bread last week by baking oatmeal breakfast bread and raisin swirl bread. With two talented bakers, Miss Cara and parent volunteer Caren, to guide them, they followed the recipes and worked superbly as a team to measure, mix, kneed and roll all the ingredients together. They even did the washing up! This was all great practise for their bake sale later in the week, although these two baked goods never quite made it to the sale…mmm…delicious!
Click on to see a gallery of photos of the class busy baking and to learn more about this bread making topic.

Fundraising frenzy for Year 6!
After a restful break, Year 6 have come back raring to go! With a ton of school entrance exams coming their way, the children are eager to raise the necessary funds for an end of year trip as celebration/ reward for completing a tough final year at primary school. Parents very kindly donated their time to detailed discussion of how to reach this end goal. The result of which was a plan for a smorgasbord of fundraising fun!
The first event takes place on Saturday 5th February from 5pm until 8pm and is an old favourite-the ‘Quiz night.’ A fantastic opportunity to pit your wits against family and friends!
Following closely on; a Talent show. bake sale, movies and much more are all in the pipeline so watch this space!!
Christmas Problem Solving
Our Year 6 and Year 4 level Math groups got together this week to work on some Christmas problem solving. The Year 6 took on the role of teachers, supporting the Year 4s. They prepared their lessons carefully, thinking through how they would help and encourage their partners to work through each problem, logically and methodically, using a range of strategies. Everyone enjoyed the experience and the room was a buzz of activity.
Year 6 Pack Groceries at Local Supermarket
Year 6 took part in a festive bag-pack at IGA on Tuesday the 14th of December. On a quest to raise money for a trip to Washington D.C in the summer, the children have been racking their brains for as many different fund-raising ideas as possible. The trip is a once in a lifetime chance for the children to visit some of the most important historical sites in U.S.A. history as well as being a well-deserved treat after all their hard work in numerous exams this year.
From 16.30 – 18.30 the children worked extremely hard, packing bags for customers. It was a busy time of day for the supermarket and they were often faced with long queues, however the children did Provo Primary proud with huge smiles and polite and friendly attitudes. It was a fantastic learning experience for the children, letting them practice good communication skills as well as being their very first opportunity to work for money. The children amazed Miss Cara by fostering mature and independent behaviour well ahead of their age.
At the end of the bag-pack, all were tired but enthusiastic about their experience. IGA staff were effervescent in their praise of the children’s efforts and eager for them to come back whenever desired!
Yr 6/7 Snorkelling and Kayaking
Year 6/7 thoroughly enjoyed an exciting end of year adventure field trip. The day started with a ‘Big Blue’ expedition to Little Water Cay to study the local rock iguanas in their habitat. There was also the opportunity to snorkel in our beautiful turquoise ocean to observe the underwater wildlife, and to kayak in the mangroves to see the many juvenile species living there. The day ended up with a fun time playing on the beach. A few downpours didn’t dampen any spirits and everyone enjoyed this special day together.
Year 6/7s Assemblage Art
Accompanying David, the steel pan tuner, was his wife Sonia, who is an accomplished artist in her own right. She specializes in an art form known as ‘assemblage’, which involves searching for and gathering discarded natural and man-made objects, then assembling them as a 3D ‘collage’.
As Year 6/7 will be working on an Art Unit involving working with the environment as stimuli, Sonia was particularly interested to work with those students. She shared her blog, showing them her work and explaining how she created each piece. She then encouraged them to ‘have a go’ using materials she had gathered from beaches in North and Middle Caicos. They had everything from discarded shoes to sand dollars; from rusty nails to pieces of broken plastic; from coral to shells. See some more photos of their artwork.
The students thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with a visiting artist and enjoyed listening to Sonia’s comments and suggestions about their pieces. We all spent a relaxing, fun and stimulating couple of hours with a lovely lady. Thank you, Sonia.
Year 5, 6 and 7’s Mini Greek Olympics
Last Thursday, as part of the Year 5/6/7’s History lesson, Mrs Karine organised a mini Olympics, based on the 5 events of the pentathlon. The children were split into 5 teams, Argos, Corinth, Athens, Sparta and Megara and all took part in a sprint, arm wrestle, discus, javelin or standing jump. As we have learned, the 5 city states were very competitive, and our children were wonderful in role. We definitely had lots of cheating Spartans! It was a great morning with the Athenians coming out as the overall winners. Well done, everyone!
Year 3 – 7 Sports Day 2009
Our Year 3 to 7 Sports’ Day was a huge success today with children demonstrating a range of athletic track and field skills, great sportsmanship and team work. From javelin and long jump to hurdles, sprints and relay races, all the children tried their individual best and had lots of fun. Thank you everyone who helped organize the event and to all of you who were able to attend.
Congratulations to our Graduating students of 2009
On Friday 26th June, our six Grade 6 students graduated from Providenciales Primary School. Each student made a speech highlighting memories of their time at the school and they were presented with a diploma. Four of graduates will stay on at the school for Grade 7. One has chosen to go on to the British West Indies Collegiate School here on island and one is off to Buckingham, Browne and Nichols in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We wish them all well with their future endeavours.
Grade 6/7 Perform ‘The Lion King’
The Grade 6/7 entertained the school and their parents with two performances of their end of year production of ‘The Lion King’. Creating the show with help from some of their teachers, they worked hard together to write and learn their parts, choreograph their dances, and practise their singing and recorder playing. They displayed amazing acting, dancing, singing and musical talent and the audience was thoroughly captivated and entertained. Well done, everyone, a truly outstanding production! Watch highlights from the show in the movie above and see a slideshow of photos.
Grade 5/6/7s Flower Poetry
Our Grade 5/6/7s were inspired by the beauty of flowers and how they touch our lives with their vibrant colours and tender petals. Here are three of their soul-touching poems …
I LOVE YOU SO DEAR
My beautiful flower,
White like new fallen snow, scent sweet like a lollipop,
Yellow center like the sunset at the end of the day,
Each petal curling like a great teacher’s hair
Laying lightly on her beautiful face.
Three boastful buds, dark purple with yellow dots
Like stars in a never ending night, waiting to be let loose
And see the world around them.
Oh Flower tell me how you feel,
Are you sad or happy, would you wish to be anything but?
I wish to be you, do you wish to be me?
For you are so small and I am so big,
Your buds are patient, waiting, just waiting to be let free,
I know you’ll be as sweet and soft as the one in front of you.
ROUGE
This flower as red as a cherry
Petals like ruffles on a ball gown
With vibrant yellow, in between,
You could pick this flower to say I Love You.
If this flower could talk, what would it say?
Would it be modest? Would it be kind?
If this flower could dance,
Would it dance like a ballerina?
A modern dancer?
A jazz dancer?
If this flower could wish, what would it wish for?
A beautiful world?
Love, like the love of Romeo and Juliet?
Faith, like the faith of a teacher has in her student?
And what about me?
What would this magnificent flower think of me?
Me,
Me,
Me…
CRIMSON GARLAND
A dash of crimson, in a bright flowing gown,
The petals wither on the wind, as detailed as a finger print,
The tree swelters in a molten volcano.
O flower, O flower, what are you feeling?
O flower, O flower, what do you wish?
For you are a touch of radiance in the gloom of the murky forest
You have enough power to bring out the joy in a still tree
You are a phenomenon of dominance.
O flower, O flower, do you feel envy?
O flower, O flower, Never fear because you are phenomenal,
Phenomenal, phenomenal.
Grade 6/7 Create ‘Six Room’ Poems
Six room poems began with students writing a draft on a paper divided into six sections or rooms. In the first room, the students described a strong image of something that they had seen outside in nature. In the second room, they described light and colours associated with their image and in the third room sounds they might have heard. The fourth room was for any questions about their image, the fifth room for writing feelings and the sixth room for repeating words. In the final draft, the students could use any or all the rooms to create a poem. Here are two examples of the stunning six room poems written by the grade 6/7 class.
THE VALLEY
A beautiful valley down below
A valley with the greenest grass A field of Welsh flowers so yellow The surrounding world crowned with radiant light Smothered in the sound of peace Speechless by the power of Nature and its amazing features.
THE WONDERS OF THE VIBRANT SUN
A fire like ball Sinking into the plains of Africa Casting its vibrant light onto the land Creating shadows behind anything in its path, All you can hear is the brushing of trees, And the movement of wild animals, taking everything in. It made me wonder why in Africa the sunset is so unique. And then it was gone, leaving behind a beautiful bright sky Full of oranges, reds and yellows. Spectacular, Spectacular, Spectacular…Grade 6/7 Bridge Building Project
In term 1, we used kits to build 3 types of bridge: a Roman Arch bridge from clay ‘bricks’, a truss bridge using triangular sections and a suspension bridge.
In term 2, we did ‘The Bridge-Building Challenge.’
We were given 15 x 50cm lengths of 2mm square balsa wood.
We had to build a bridge:
* measuring 40cm long and 5 cm wide
* that weighed less than 100g
* let a model car freely roll across the ‘roadway’.
* support a mass of 2kg
All of our bridges passed, so . . . we added more mass until the bridges collapsed! Our 2 best bridges supported 7.5kg! See a slideshow of all our bridges and them being tested.
Red Nose Day
Grade 6/7 thought they’d like to join in the fun of ‘Red Nose Day’. This charity event raises money for people in need in the UK and Africa. We have sent our photo to their website.
G1-7 Sports’ Day 2009
Our Grade 1-7 Sports’ Day was a great success today and was packed full of fun. The children were full of energy, determined to do their best and displayed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. See the movie below for all the highlights.

Graduation – Class of 2008
We are so proud of our Grade 6 graduates. All 6 graduated on Thursday – and I’m pleased to say 5 will be staying with us next year as part of our new Grade 6/7 class. I am really looking forward to seeing what new heights we can scale together.
Well done and congratulations from us all. There are some more pictures in our slideshow.
Celebrating Academic Success
As we head towards the end of another school year, we would like to share with you some scores and statistics from our recent tests.
Where Dreams Come True . . .
On Monday 2nd June, all of the children from Grade 5/6 of Provo Primary School flew off to Orlando for 4 days. The field trip was organised through an American Company, allowing us to access Disney’s Youth Education Scheme and included 3 workshops run by Disney experts in Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios as well as giving us access to the other activities in the parks too!
