Provo Parachute Show!

Children from Year 4 investigated the effects of air resistance this week when they were asked to create Provo’s very first parachute regiment!

As part of their science topic on ‘Friction’, the children were challenged to create a parachute that reduced the speed that their character fell. After much planning, head-scratching and problem solving, they were ready to test their inventions. Some groups created traditional parachutes while others chose a hand-glider design. Both ideas worked well, and it was clear that the resistance between the parachute and the warm Provo air worked perfectly to keep our little wooden volunteers safe!

Key Stage 2 PE Showcase

This week, children in Key Stage 2 were excited to present their PE learning in our end of term showcase event. Older children participated in a Gymnastics Show while children in Years 3 and 4 participated in a 4-on-4 Basketball Tournament. This was the second of two such showcase events this term and we were very pleased that is was again well supported and praised by parents.  We’d like to say a big thank you to Adina and all the staff at Graceway Sports Centre for the use of their amazing facilities, which have enabled the children to learn and improve so much this term!

Dr Seuss’ The Lorax

The Year 3 and 4 enjoyed their visit to the movies the other day to see the animated version of Dr Seuss’ fabulous book ‘The Lorax’. In recognition of this wonderful author, (and to assist us with our fraction work – what fraction of the hat is red?) we all made hats using the famous Dr Seuss stripy hat logo to get into the swing of things.

We all thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and watching the film.  In the next school term, we will be using the story as a foundation for lots of other activities  – from exploring the Local Environment, Pollution Issues and Conservation to writing a persuasive text.

Roman Settlement discovered in Provo!

Children in Flamingo Class have been learning about how real historians find out about life in the past. We wondered how is it possible to know how Romans cleaned themselves. Or whether it is actually possible to know what a Roman kitchen looked like? Does anyone really understand how and why people celebrated Roman gods?

As part of our Theme Week activities, parents were invited to join us in undertaking a real archaeological dig, so that we might discover how all this is possible. One morning, we all set about finding evidence of a previously undiscovered Roman settlement right here in Provo!

Key Stage 2 Rugby

The children in Years 3-6 have been excited to try their hand at another fantastic sport this half term! We were delighted to offer a course of Rugby ‘taster’ sessions when we received the offer of coaching from the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union!

These sessions have focused on the key skills of passing, movement and game-play. Some children, who already participate in the TCIRFU’s clubs, were keen to show off their skills in the sport, while others were excited by the challenge of something new!

We will watch this space and look forward to seeing our students developing a good understanding of another exciting team sport.

Taking Ownership of the Library!

Inspired by lots of newly bought fiction books and our computer system needing updating, a chance to make a change and take ownership of the how the library is organised was seized by KS2 children this week.  Discussion, debate, research and lots of sorting occurred as the children worked together to re-organise all the fiction books from the library shelves into their respective genres, during World Book Day Celebrations last week.

“It felt good to work together to organise the library”…”I like how the different genre stickers will help me find the sort of books I’m interested in”…”I think our new library looks bright and colourful”.

Una Semana Muy Ocupada – A Very Busy Week

It seems Flamingo Class are very busy people! They’ve been learning how to tell us all about their packed schedules in Spanish classes and have created this wonderful video to show everyone what a multi-talented bunch they are! This half term they have been learning how to use different verbs to talk about their pastimes.  They have linked this together with the days of the week to give us a run down of all the activities in which they are involved. In our classes, the pupils have also learnt how to change verbs to talk about other people and the things they do in their spare time, as well as using verbs in the infinitive to give their opinions about different activities.  In doing this, they have also managed to acquire a few new adjectives to justify their opinions. Pretty amazing stuff! Take a look at the video to see just how much these excellent Spanish speakers manage to fit into their week! “¡Buen trabajo, Flamingo Class!” (Good work, Flamingo Class!)

What on Earth is a Talking Text?

This term, in the Flamingo Class, we have been thinking about how we can explain our ideas to someone else. Writing an explanation, it appears, is harder than you’d think!

To help us remember the structure of an explanation text, we have been learning a Talking Text! At first, we thought Mr Toby had gone mad! The talking text didn’t look anything like a book we’d seen before.

This means we all learned to speak our text aloud, before writing anything down! This helped us a lot, as we were able to make sure we included titles, subheadings, full stops, commas and subordinating clauses. All of that without even writing a single word!

This week we have been busy using our talking text to help us write our own explanations, based on our science learning. It was amazing how we were all able to remember our full stops better!

Feel free to drop by Flamingo Class to check out our fantastic writing!

Year 4 Investigate if all 3d Cube Nets make a Cube

In our Year 4 Maths group we discovered that you can make many different net arrangements with six 2d squares, but are they all nets that all fold into a 3d cube?  We decided to investigate this further.  We used square tiles and masking tape to create each net and then tried to fold them up.  We started to find that we were getting better at visualizing the net being folded up and could make pretty accurate predictions about which nets would or wouldn’t make a cube before we tested them.  If you would like to have a go, try our worksheet and test the nets yourself.  We also investigated dice nets.  You can have a go at arranging the numbers on the dice net that we found most challenging here.

Scientific Excavation in Flamingo Class!

We were all surprised to hear that a scientific dig was going to take place in the Flamingo Classroom this week. We were even more surprised to hear that we were going to be the scientists!

In order to understand what happens in a real scientific dig, we were set the task of finding and excavating a collection of objects that were completely buried in sand. We learned how to observe, classify and identify the objects that we uncovered. It took a lot of time, care and patience in order to discover and clean the items. All of them had to be inspected and drawn before we were allowed to move them. It didn’t take long to see that we were dealing with a large collection of bones!

Year 4 Pop-up Adventure stories

After many weeks of patience and hard work, we have finally completed our pop-up books in Year 4! During the Autumn term, children wrote adventure stories based on our Tudor Explorers topic. We wanted to bring these adventures to life, and so set about creating our very own pop-up books! This design project took longer than we thought, as we worked carefully to make sure each page worked correctly.

We tried to make each page of the book interactive, so that the reader could move something in the story. We learned about how real pop-up books are made, and what kind of tricks they use to make things move.

We also had to learn about how to lay out or page in ICT, so that our writing and front cover looked as professional as the rest of the book. We were pleased to finally combine all elements into a completed book!

We were really happy with our completed books – we hope you enjoy seeing them! Take a look at the video and photos of what we created! [Read more…]

Year 4’s Pizza Fractions

Year 4 recycled pizza boxes and scrap paper to make a game that would help them to learn about fractions. Each child created pizzas cut into a variety of number of slices.  In the game, the children matched mixed number and improper fraction cards to the pizzas that showed these fractions.  Some of the cards were equivalent fractions so the children had to imagine cutting or combining slices to match them.  This game certainly got the children thinking and learning lots about fractions.  It also got everyone feeling hungry – especially for pizza!

KS2 Athletics Sports Day 2011

As a culmination of all the events in our Keeping Healthy week, Years 3-6 set off for Sports Day at the Athletics track! All children competed in teams, collecting the greatest score possible for their groups by either running, jumping or throwing for victory! After developing our Athletics skills throughout the past 6 weeks, the children were able to show off their newly acquired skills in the hurdles, long jump, triple jump, discus, javelin, and shot put.

Sports Day created a very different atmosphere to our normal PE sessions. Due to increased levels of concentration, the pressure of a large audience (thank you parents for supporting your children so brilliantly!) or the excitement of the competition, every child produced some excellent performances! All of the teachers were delighted to hear about all the Personal Best records that were beaten in each event. It seemed like every child was achieving great things and celebrating their individual successes!
So, a huge congratulations to every child who participated with such wonderful spirit and enthusiasm. Our Sports Day was jammed full of great sportsmanship and plenty of the ‘Olympic Spirit’ that we had spoken about before the event. It was the perfect way to round off our keeping Healthy week. Click read more to see some more photo of the children in action, both in practice sessions and in Sports Day.

Life aboard a Tudor Ship…it’s not all Fame and Fortune!

Over the past few weeks, Flamingo Class have been researching what life was like for sailors on board a Tudor Explorer’s ship. We expected to hear stories of great discoveries and valuable treasure…we were in for a shock! Life on board a Tudor Ship could be awful! Tales of scrubbing the deck, sitting for hours in the Crow’s Nest, being locked up ‘In Irons’ and getting ill with scurvy was not what we had in mind!

We used all the evidence from our research to write a Ship’s Log from the point of view of an ordinary Tudor sailor. They tell the real story of life aboard a ship…battles with enemy ships, harsh punishments for drinking too much rum, eating mouldy fruit and being very, very tired! You’ll find them all in our accounts of life at sea!

When we had completed our Ship’s Log, we had a lot of fun ageing them. Anyone would think they really were 500 years old!  Pop by our class to take a look and see some photos here:  yr-4-ships-log-photos

Achieving Personal Bests in KS2 Athletics

In KS2 (Years 3 – 6), our Athletics P.E. programme aims to provide enjoyable and stimulating activities and challenges based on the core actions of walking, running, jumping and throwing.

Children are encouraged to set and achieve goals for the improvement of personal or team performances. Each session, the children record their results  in their ‘Personal Best Record Booklet’.  They enjoy seeing how they are improving and it adds a positive competitive element that encourages them to develop an interest in further developing their skills. These booklets have been a big hit and they are really helping to boost each child’s self-esteem.  Ask your child to share their personal record with you and see how they are improving.

We would like to thank parent volunteers, Haley and Katrina, for capturing these athletics moments for us to share with you.   Look out for future photos of our hurdles, triple jump, discus and relay sessions and we look forward to seeing you at our KS2 Sports Day on Friday 21st October – 9:15- 10:45am at the National Stadium Athletics Track.

Sir Walter RATleigh visits Flamingo Class!

What an exciting morning in Year 4! A surprise visitor appeared out of the sewing resources at 8:30am, turning a morning of handwriting and reading exercises into a full-on mouse hunt! It was hard to tell who was more frightened, us or him! Fortunately, thanks to the quick and calm eyes of one of our student “Mouse Catchers” , we managed to capture our furry guest without harming a hair on his head! With thoughts of our Tudor topic swimming in our head, we decided to name him after one of the all-time greatest explorers. Arise Sir Walter RATleigh! The original Sir Walter was famous for being the first man to successfully sail around the world. It seemed rather fitting, since Sir Walter Ratleigh successfully scurried around our entire classroom before giving himself up! Never has a mouse been given such a fine name!  Read on to watch a video of his release to freedom.

Flamingo Class’ Tudor Science Experiment…

Mr Toby set us a rather odd challenge this week!  He told us that, on his daring voyages around the world, the famous Tudor Explorer Sir Walter Raleigh insisted on drinking piping hot tea!  The only problem was, he would never drink his tea right away…apparently he was too busy searching for new land, fighting with Spanish ships or just showing off his fine Tudor clothes! By the time he came to drink his tea, it would be cold!

We worked together to plan a fair test, so that we could compare how well different materials kept the tea hot over time.  Read on to learn more about our experiment and to see more photos.

Flamingo Class Whip up a Storm!

As part of our art project, we set ourselves the challenge of building a huge ocean mural directly onto our Tudor topic display board. In order to decide how to lay out our mural, we looked at a range of artworks from all around the world. Then, we used all of our cooperation and communication skills to organise ourselves into teams, so that we could work effectively together. Once prepared, the fun began! We pasted torn strips of paper onto the board using glue, layering each colour to create the impression of crashing waves. In just over an hour, with our hands and fingers thoroughly stuck together, we could step back and enjoy our creation! Read on to see more photos of us working together on this project and the finished mural.  We hope you like it as much as we do – please call by the Flamingo classroom to take a look for yourselves at the real thing.

Storm Soundscape

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Flamingo Classroom! To introduce our topic on Tudor Explorers, we have been thinking about life on the ocean in many aspects of our learning. In our Literacy work, we have used ‘The breaking wave of Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai to inspire poetry writing.   Throughout the opening weeks, we have been exploring how to use word and phrases to create moods, sounds and images in our reader’s imagination. To get our own imagination working hard, we re-created the sounds of a tempest using only a few musical instruments and our own voices. This ‘soundscape’ helped us to experience the storm. It actually sounded quite frightening! Fortunately, it also gave us some excellent ideas for our writing!  Come and read our poems, displayed on our Storm Mural in our class.

“I am” Poetry

Miss Bonnie introduced an ‘I am’ writing frame to our year 4 – 6 children.  Here are some reflective poems written by Rahim, Millie, Amanda and Grace.

I Am Rahim

I am an imaginative boy who likes to dream,

I wonder if the world is ours, free for us to take,
I hear the sounds of achievement ringing in my ears,
I see characters popping out of fantasies and books,
I want to be able to dream away for hours and hours on end,
I am an imaginative boy who likes to dream…

Did you know a Squid had a Beak?

Following an introductory lesson on cephalopods with a focus on squid, the Year 4/5 and 6 classes participated in a hands-on squid dissection lesson.

As the dissection progressed, the children were able to identify major external and internal features and organs of a squid and to explain their functions. The children were particularly excited to extract the squid’s beak, its eye lenses and its remnant shell (called a pen).  They then used the pen and some squid ink to write a message!

The children absolutely loved the experience and would like to thank Mrs. Bonnie and Mr Joel for teaching them about cephalopods and for leading the squid dissection.

Year 4 Math Investigations

My Year 4 Math group has been busy investigating and problem solving these past few weeks.  From testing statements and finding rules when doing calculations involving odd and even numbers, to exploring symmetry and 3D shapes and their nets, to finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares and seeing patterns in their results. I am really proud of each of the children’s efforts, their team work skills and how they have been applying their mathematical skills to all our investigations. We hope you enjoy sharing in their learning by watching this slideshow. Please also feel welcome to come and find out more about what they have discovered and to have a go at some of activities yourself.

Many, Many Years Ago in Ancient Greece…

Years 4 and 5 wrote their own myths and kindly invited Year 3 to share the reading of them. Year 3 were so impressed with their stories that were full of magical events, scary slimy creatures, impossible tasks and brave heroes, that they were inspired to also write their own myths.  Year 3 would like to pass on a big thank you to Years 4/5.  They would also like to return the invite and have more fun shared reading next week – this time with their myths.

Year 4/5 Learning about Greek Myths

This term during our Literacy lessons, Year 4 and 5 have been learning about Greek Myths.  A myth is a story with a purpose.  It tries to explain the way the world is.  Greek Myths also try to explain the relationship between Gods and humans.  The class has read, watched and heard tales about Hercules and Theseus and the Minotaur, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Perseus and Medusa and many more.   They have designed their own ferocious monsters and are presently creating fact sheets about each playful God.  Their aim, when they are ready, is to write their own exciting Greek myth.  They hope to publish some of these here on our blog – so watch this space!
