Years 4 Home Learning: Express Feelings through Google Chrome Songmaker

Year 4 enjoyed creating songs that were a symbol of how they were feeling that day, in that moment.  I wonder if you can sense how they felt by looking at the visual composition before listening.   How does their music make you feel?

“I’m having mixed emotions, because you can think of this time as good or bad.”HN

“My song is a happy 😊 song because I feel happy 😊 today 🎼. But I still feel a little bit sad 😞 because I miss my friends.” KB

“I had so much fun!”

Have a go yourself and express your feelings through music.  The songmaker is one of a variety of fantastic musical experiences on the Musiclab website and it’s perfect for our home learning situation and all ages.

“We Are Turks and Caicos… We’ll See You Soon!” says Year 2 and 4

Inspired by a recent Turks and Caicos Tourist Board destination video, ‘We are Turks and Caicos’, our Year 2 and 4 home learners became creative graphic designers and multimedia creators, designing their own promotional media offerings to promote the very best of our islands to visitors.

The original video was made in an effort to keep the destination of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the forefront of the minds of potential visitors, with the message, ‘We’ll see you soon!’   It promotes wanderlust for paradise with the use of breathtaking imagery that highlights the ‘Beautiful by Nature’ islands and its hospitable people.

Click on to see some individual videos the children made.

All in all, I think you’ll agree that our students efforts equally highlight and promote what makes the TCI such a special place to come and visit.

Celebration Assembly – Home Learning Style – Friday 3rd April 2020

This week families have nominated all the teachers to receive ‘Stars of the Week’ certificates as part of our virtual Primary School Celebration Assembly.  What a wonderful way to end an usual spring term of learning.

Teachers have done an amazing job adjusting to distant learning through our Home Learning Programme and happy students sharing their love and appreciation for them is heartwarming to see.  Thank you everyone for all your photos and videos.

If it’s ever been true that it takes a village to raise a child, this is a moment for that village to come together, and Provo Primary and Middle School’s teachers and parents have certainly been a great team and led the way.  School may be closed but our student’s brains have been open for business as usual!

Celebration Assembly – Home Learning Style – Fri 27th March 2020

After a successful week of distant learning through our Home Learning Programme, of course we had to end the week with our usual primary school ‘Celebration Assembly’.  Congratulations to all our students, parents and teachers – through your great teamwork and hard work, learning has continued to flourish at Provo Primary School. It was lovely to celebrate this virtually, imagining we were on the school field as usual.  Thank you everyone for all your participation and for doing the best you can.

Yr 4 Build Rome in a Day!

Rome wasn’t built in a day (as the saying goes) but here at Provo Primary, students in Year 4 have proved differently! They were given the task at the start of an exciting new topic to ‘build Rome’ in their classroom and they were given 24 hours to do it…

First, they had to research the type of buildings and structures still in existence in Rome and then they had to decide who to work with. As you can see from the photos, the children transformed a bare wall into a 3D city complete with written explanations. It was wonderful to see so much team work and so many skills being used across a range of subjects – Research (non-fiction texts using index pages and glossary), the Internet and personal experiences of Rome, Maths (shape, measurement, weight, estimation), DT (design, imagination, creation, joining techniques, evaluation), PSHE (collaboration, compromise, negotiation , respect for others).

This was a great project to kick-start our new topic and parents and friends are warmly invited to come and see this learning at our Open House on Friday afternoon.

Y4 meet a Chiropractor

Today, the flamingo class had a visitor, Dr Craig Zavitz, a retired chiropractor.  He and his knowledgeable assistant, Robin, taught the class how the spine is formed from a single cell and how it grows. They played a game with the children to help them understand how the brain sends messages through the body, through the spine and to all our organs. Then Dr Craig had a role play experience to show children how a chiropractor could make small adjustments to the spine in order to improve ailments. We had a question and answer time with Robin who also brought some follow-up activities. The children were quizzed on skeleton facts they knew already and they could answer all but one question correctly, much to Dr Craig’s amazement! We all learned about how to keep our back healthy through diet, exercise and weight bearing correctly. Thank you Dr Craig and Robin for giving us this experience.

Year 4 make a new start to the year – in style!

The Year 4s have made a great start to the new year with a positive attitude to all their learning and new topic, ‘Moving and Growing’. They have studied paintings of people in various poses by famous artists. The work shows very different styles using a wide range of medium and Y4 have made a good attempt at recreating their favourite style. Here are just a few samples of their lovely work. . .

Bonfire Night at Bay Bistro- Provo Primary’s 9th year!

The Flamingo class had a fun filled evening celebrating Bonfire Night at Bay Bistro. This was a wonderful end to a week’s learning in school about this true, macabre story and we would like to express our thanks to Clive Whent for hosting this event.

For a couple of children, this was their first ever bonfire night and they will have happy memories for many years to come. There were some surprise firecrackers hiding inside Clive’s Guy who towered above the Y4’s Stuart version.

The class researched previous Guy Fawkes effigies before deciding to make a life-size model of their own. Each child contributed to a part of his body or clothing and donations came from home, the garden, other teachers and even the Salvation Army!

It is a Gym Thing!

How lucky are we? Years 2,  3  and 4 were fortunate attend a special introductory session at the newly opened Provo Gymnastics Academy, Downtown. They climbed ropes, balanced on beams, made bridges on floor work and tried their hand at somersaulting from a bar.

The coaches got them warmed up and busy for 90 minutes non-stop.  They each had a fabulous morning using their ‘observation and listening’ skills to build on their balance, co-ordination, flexibility and strength.

Thank you to Denver and Shin, the two professional coaches, who worked with them. Check out the photos to see how much fun they all had!

And let’s not forget that in our Literacy Letterland learning energetic, Gentle Ginger helps us to read and spell the word ‘gymnastics’ and other words like magic, huge,  age and giant!

Flamingos go free in fridge/freezer land!

The Y4s Flamingo Class had an amazing trip to the IGA on Wednesday to learn all about how the supermarket keeps food fresh.
They had an extensive tour of the various  departments including food preparation, weighing, pricing and storage.
They learnt how fridges, freezers and ovens keep food at particular temperatures and they loved experiencing ‘Alaska’ (the minus 35 degree freezer)!

In class on Friday, the Flamingos each wrote a ‘thank you’ letter to Mr Burns for arranging the visit.

A huge welcome to our new School Council – 2019-2020

Congratulations to our new Year 3 – 6 School Councillors for being chosen to represent your classes and your school. This time round we have 3 students from each class to share the responsibilities over the year. Thank you to everyone who put themselves forward for election. Once again, all the teachers commented on how well you represented yourselves, it takes courage as well as enthusiasm to present yourselves to the whole class – keeping that amygdala in check. Well done to all of you!

We have already been busy talking about adjusting the playtime schedule as well as revisiting and reminding us all about continuing to use metal and reusable cutlery and NO to STRAWS! Are we ready to reduce all single-use plastic?!

The first early ‘Dress Down Day’ was a success. You all donated a total of $335 – an outstanding amount of money that will all be donated to assist the people of the Bahamas who suffered during Hurricane Dorian. [Read more…]

Our Year 4 Flamingos are truly a flamboyant flock!

The Y4 class have had a great start to the year, creating lots of art work for their class animal, the flamingo, and finding out some fun facts. Did you know, a flamingo’s ‘knee’ is actually an ankle joint?!

Children have worked in pairs, small groups and as a class to produce some amazing 3D models (see photos below). They have also started their topic for this half term, learnt about their amazing brains AND engaged in some challenging math activities around place value!

Wild Habitats Versus Zoos ~ Year 4 Explore

Goodness, as usual it feels now as if the year has flown by! This last term has been busier than ever.

In connection with the Science and Topic lessons, the Year 4 students took a trip to Iguana Island. The class has spent time discussing different habitats and the variety of animals found in each. They have done detailed research on their own and have discussed the habitats found in Turks & Caicos as well as the plants and animals in each.

Year 4 Roman Brunch

Salve omnes!

As a celebration to end our study on the Romans, we had our amazing Roman Brunch. We would like to say thanks to the parents for supporting the event. The students loved every moment of it. They came all dressed up in their Roman outfits and were able to experience what life was like for the Romans when they feasted. We had roman music playing in the background as we enjoyed a meal of grapes, apples, pizzas, cheese and so much more.

Time was also spent getting familiar with the Roman Numerals and using them on their hand-made clocks as well as challenging themselves with Maths problems written using Roman Numerals. [Read more…]

Year 4 discover what a chiropractor does!

Our first week back after mid term break was very action packed!

Dr. Craig and his wife Robin, dropped in to share with the Year 4 students what he does as a Chiropractor. The children played an informative, fun game which showed how our brain sends signals to our skeletal system. It was quite amazing.  Thank you!

In his presentation, Dr. Craig talked about how people might injure their back, their neck or other parts of their skeletal system and the problems this can cause; symptoms such as blockages in the spinal cord and pain and muscular discomfort. This is when he treats people to help them get better. He demonstrated how he would help patients having any of those issues. The class were impressive with their knowledge of our bones and muscles, asking and answering many questions.

A busy half term in Year 4!

And so we come to the end of another very busy half term in Year 4. The children are working hard to finish off the mythical stories they have written – we hope to have them word processed and published before the end of the week!

They have also done some beautiful paintings of mermaids and made magical mermaid mirrors.

We’ve been learning more about The Romans and The Celts who lived in Britain before the Roman invasion. The class have made Celtic shields and done role-play as different individuals – stating their case, based on their jobs and position within the tribe as to whether or not the tribe should go to battle!

Lining up for Mondrian art in Year 4

In this last and very busy week of term it has been nice to think back over this first part of Year 4 and how hard the children have worked. So much progress has been made and I’m excited to look forward to the New Year and a hopefully much more settled term – for all of us.

I wanted to show you a picture of the art work the class did, inspired by the Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian. The pictures have been up in our classroom, but some of you might not have had a chance to see them properly – they are very authentic looking, I’m sure you’ll agree!

Learn more about Piet Mondrian here.

Here are 10 crafty projects should your child be interested in doing more art over the holidays.

Understanding Electrical Safety in Year 4

Over the past few weeks, the Year 4 students have been focusing their attention on electricity. They have done several investigations and observations to guide their understanding of what electricity is, the different sources of electricity as well as safety guidelines to follow when using electricity.

Electricity is amazing stuff.  It can power everything from your iPad, a car, a sports stadium, a remote toy or a cell-phone. However, it can also be dangerous.  Electrical hazards can cause burns, shocks and electrocution. Electrical incidents injure or kill many adults and/ or children each year. In many cases, these incidents are preventable.

SPORTING SUPERHEROES! – Years 3-5 Sports Day 2018

Last Thursday the 8th of November and the previous Thursday (1st) Years 3-5 had their Sports day and what a set of Sports days it was! Due to the eagerness of the children to carry out a range of races and the temperature at that time of day, we decided to split the events over two sessions. This way the children could enjoy both without feeling over-exhausted or with sunstroke. Our first session involved the track events: 100m, hurdles, 200/400m and relay. The skill and speed of our runners in all year groups really blew us (as teachers) all away; they were superb. It was fantastic to see how determined and how focused the children were on pacing and delivering in each race and quite simply the huge passion so many of them have for running in general.

The next session was based around the field events of discus, javelin and long jump with the focus less on competition with each other and more with themselves. [Read more…]

Vote for your Favourite Provo Primary Guy!

Next Monday, 5th November, will be our 8th Annual Provo Primary Bonfire Night! As always, we anticipate a wonderful evening of fun, food, fireworks and (bon)fire for our Provo Primary families to enjoy!

Over the past 7 years, each Year 4 class has set about learning about the history of Bonfire Night to understand why a Guy is made for this unusual celebration. It has become tradition for the Year 4 class to then create their own Guy Fawkes as part of their Design Technology classes. And each year, among the crowd of children and parents, the Year 4 children huddle at the front to watch their hard work go up in flames!

To get us in the mood for this wonderful and unique event, we thought it might be fun to look back over the 7 wonderful Guy Fawkes made by Year 4 students between 2011-2017.

Enjoy some old photos below of long-since graduated students below as we throw back to Bonfire Nights past.

Our current Year 4s sneaked into the action when Mr Toby taught them in Kindergarten. I wonder whether this might give them an advantage – we can’t wait to see what they come up with this year!

SFS Superstars visit was a hit!

Wednesday the 17th October the whole of KS2 were lucky enough to be visited by the wonderful SFS (School for Field Studies) from South Caicos. These are university students from America who come over to study the nature, biology and wonders of the T.C.I for one semester. They have visited our school for roughly the past 5 years and it is always a complete delight to have them here. Their enthusiasm and their kind, friendly, open nature towards all of our children makes their visit not only academically worthwhile but also a wonderful social experience for the children interacting with a different age group.

Thank you, for a special year.

I actually can’t believe we have come to the end of the year. The children and I talk often about how quickly the months have passed… And now I must sadly but proudly wish them on their way to YEAR 5! They have been the most wonderful class and I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch to help me learn the wonderful ways of Provo Primary.

It has been a super term (although any tips on how to deal with this heat would be very welcome!).

As promised in our last newsletter, our MAGICAL MYTHS are now published and make exciting reading, involving everything from mermaids and dragons to elves to ghosts and even the Devil’s daughter!

Mythical, magical Year 4 meet a mermaid at the beach

A definite highlight of the short but packed Spring term, was our visit to the beach! As an introduction for writing our own myths, we learned about Mermaids and Selkies and went off to Iguana Island for inspiration. We gathered shells and other treasure on the beach – watching out for Iguanas! Then we went for a swim ……and MET A MERMAID! We had the chance to talk to her for quite some time before she swam off in to the distance and disappeared beneath the water!

Our amazing mermaid myths are now complete so please feel welcome to come into the Year 4 classroom to read them and to see our mermaid pictures close up.
