Year 2 & 3 Take to the Ocean!

Land Ahoy!

Year 2 & 3 set out on an island-adventure last week – imagining they were exploring undiscovered lands. Year 2, as part of their topic on the seafaring history of the TCI, were ably assisted by their Year 3 friends in a variety of activities.

From keeping look-out for other pirate boats (most of which turned out to be tourists, but it’s always important to keep watch!) to mapping an uninhabited island, the children had a wonderful trip on our beautiful waters.

What a wonderful boat trip – filled with fun and exploration.

Year 3 – from Story to Playscript – Enjoy

As part of our Social Studies topic this term we have been looking at the life and times of the Native Americans. A story that we really enjoyed listening to was a traditional tale that may have been retold around a tipee fire. The story is called ‘The Clever Coyote’.

Listen to how the talented Year 3 re-wrote the tale from story format to a playscript. They had so much fun using their voices (and some of their facial and hand expressions too) to assist in retelling the story, using their newly written scripts. Fabulous team work and such great expression. I hope you enjoy the story as much as we did.

‘NO TO STRAWS’ Cards

Year 3 are leading the way, creating some ‘NO TO STRAWS’ cards to help remind everyone to join the DECR  ‘WE SAY NO TO STRAWS’ campaign.  The idea is for them to take the cards out with them when their family is dining out, helping them to specifically ask for no straws when ordering their drinks.

With permission of the venue, we hope to make a collection of photographs of the children with their straw-less drinks.  Many local restaurants are already joining in with the campaign and perhaps our cards and photos will encourage more and more to consider following suit.  Please send in the photos to principal@provolearning.com

The Year 3s have also made cards to be placed into their lunch boxes to help them remember not to bring straws to school.

This campaign is to create awareness of our beautiful marine environment and how we can take small actions each day to conserve and protect it!  No Straw is a simple choice that can make a big difference. [Read more…]

Year 3 apply their classroom Numeracy skills to real life at the supermarket

Shopping at IGA

The past few weeks Year 3 have been extremely busy preparing our brains and developing our Numeracy skills for the yearly class shop to IGA.

We have been learning how to measure liquids using milliliters and liters; estimating and reading weight using grams and kilograms; plus we have been learning how to estimate, add and subtract using a decimal point – tricky, tricky!

We had a fabulous time at IGA, practicing these skills, estimating our shopping bill, paying for it and checking the change – it was a lot of FUN! A big thank you to IGA for hosting us.

We concluded our Math topic by creating an edible gingerbread house. Each ingredient had to be recorded, added up and paid for before we then happily devoured our amazing creations YUM! Well done Year 3.

Celebrating Iguana Week

View a snapshot of our week’s learning about our endemic TCI Rock Iguana. Enjoy photos of our toddlers to Year 6 as you listen to the vibes of Correy Forbes and the Rakooneers. A special thank you to ‘Rocky the Iguana’ and Dr. Higgs from The National Trust and Amy Avenant from DECR for visiting us.

Working Together in Year 3

In Year 3 we have been realising not only the FUN, but also the importance of working together. Whether it is with one person, a group or the class. When set a task that involves working with others, we realised we had to think about a few things. For instance:

* To listen with open ears to the ideas and points of view of others.

* To share and participate – make sure we do our bit!

* To show respect to other people’s ideas, strengths and weaknesses – we can’t be good at everything!

* To recognise when things are going well or not so well –  do we need a new plan?

* To celebrate the successes of all members of the team.

* To be prepared and recognise that sometimes things don’t work out the first time, that’s ok, we can just try again and even try another way!

Take a look at some of the things we have achieved ‘together’ in Year 3. We used our ‘working together’ skills admirably and even managed to have a little bit of fun too…

Going for Gaelic!

This mid-term we have been incredibly lucky to have had the chance to try out a sport that is completely new to most of us here in the T.C.I-Gaelic football Irish: Peil Ghaelach; short name Peil or Caid), commonly referred to as football or Gaelic! It is an Irish team sport, played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team’s goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) above the ground (1 point). The range of skills this game tests and improves is fantastic and has been a real eye-opener for Key Stage Two!

Year 3’s Roving Researchers

Below are just some of the amazing facts that Year 3 researched into and presented to the class. We learned so much, and had lots of fun finding out new things. How incredibly wonderful and marvelous the world around us is! Thank you Year 3 for sharing your findings with us.

Did you know…

One of the largest snowflakes ever recorded was 40cm long.?

A rose has between 20 – 40 petals, depending on the type of rose?

It takes a whole year for a palm tree to grow 30cm?

Volcano ash can travel as far as the length of Provo which is around 17 miles!

Tipi Team Work in Year 3

“Well done”

“Good job”

“Do you think we could…”

“Shall we try again?”

“It looks amazing!”

“We’re not giving up!”

These were just some of the phrases that were shared during our ‘team building tipi’ session this week. Year 3 were given the challenge to build group tipis – very much related to our Native American study of the Sioux tribe this term – Two groups worked with their own ‘build your own tipi’ set, which came with a pack of instructions – that alone was a challenge! And one group were asked to build a tipi using our fabulous new ‘loose parts’ playground equipment.

Fabulous Flamingo Week 2017 Artwork and Learning

Did you know –  flamingoes’ legs can sometimes be longer than their entire body? Flamingoes can also live up to 30 years old, and sometimes even 50 if they live in a protected place away from predators. To attract a female flamingo, the male flamingoes perform a synchronized dance whereby they stand together stretching their necks upwards, uttering calls while waving their heads and flapping their wings? We all had fun trying to imitate this dance in Year 3. We wondered if the flamingoes laughed and had as much fun as we did…what beautiful happy birds they are!

Each year, we dedicate a week to learn in-depth about the local wildlife in our environment here in the Turks and Caicos. This year we are exploring the world of Flamingoes. In previous years we have studied ospreys, sharks and turtles.  These are all extra special to us here at Provo Primary as our classes are named after these local animals.  Each year, we invite local experts in to talk to us and share their knowledge of the animals, their habitats here in the TCI and about why it is important for us to protect them.

MindUp Fun in Year 3!

During MindUp this term one of the things we have been talking about in Year 3 is the word ‘Gratitude’. We had lots of fun making our Gratitude Post Box, plus thinking, talking, discussing and role playing what the word actually meant! After much deliberation, we came to the conclusion that to us it meant being ‘truly truly thankful’ for all good things, however big or small that passes our way.

Spring Term Handball Showcase

We are excited to announce our Year 3 & 4 Spring PE Showcase, scheduled to take place at the TCIFA fields on Thursday 23rd Feb, 8:45 – 9:45am.

The children have been learning to play Handball this term and we are looking forward to demonstrating new skills and game play for you. This year, the showcase will consist of two exhibition games, starting after a warm-up at 8:45am, and a parents ‘taster’ game. Year 5 & 6 will also be joining us as spectators, ahead of their own Handball lessons.

We will be providing information on the sport of Handball (or, rather, the version of Junior Handball that we are learning). Miss Mani and I have been thrilled by the progress and improvement in all children and we hope that this will be evident in the exhibition games.

We would also like to invite parents to participate in a short ‘taster’ game. Many children found learning this new sport challenging and we know that they would be excited to see you try it too! So, we encourage parents to attend in work-out clothing and ready to play!

Many thanks for your support!

Spanish Language Passports are being issued at Provo Primary

Here at Provo Primary we are very proud of our Spanish Language programme and we want to make sure that our parents know just how fantastic it is, the progress their children are making and just how much they can do in Spanish!

One of the ways we hope this will be made clearer is through the introduction of our Language Passports. These have also been created to help the children see just how much progress they make from year to year and to keep track of any areas they need to work on.

The passport is made up of ‘can do’ statements which the children colour in when they feel they can carry out the statement, and have shown this understanding to the teacher.  This allows the children to self-assess their ability and the teacher to understand where the children need help and where they are confident.

We will be launching the passports after half-term to Years 1-3 to start with to see how they work. Please feel free to ask Miss Cara or Mrs. Yorka to see your child’s ‘Passport to Spanish’.

Was the BIG BAD wolf really so bad? Year 3 consider things from his perspective!

When we had finished reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood, we began to wonder how the poor old wolf felt. He always seems to be portrayed as the wicked, mean and nasty character in the story. But was he really so mean?

During our earlier MindUp/P.S.H.C.E session we had just been talking about the importance of having an ‘open mind’ and the value of being able to sometimes take on a different perspective, especially during problem solving. We talked about how ‘perspective’ allows us to consider more than one way of understanding a behaviour, event or situation.

So how did the wolf really feel to make him act in such a way?

We decided to think of other words that could describe other feelings the wolf may have had.  Thesaurus’ were used to find alternative words to describe these feelings. Eventually we got to the really FUN part. In our ‘feelings’ groups, using our body language, tone of voice and our facial expressions we acted out the story. But this time from the possible wolf’s perspective!

Looking at the photos below, can you guess which ‘feeling’ is being conveyed by each facial expression?

Maybe the wolf really wasn’t that bad after all?

Year 3 Celebrate TCI History and Heritage

yr-3-tci-nov-2016-22What an exciting half term it has been for all of us. We have been discovering all sorts of wonderful and exciting things about the place we call home. We have learned about the different industries, explorers, neighbouring countries, plants, foods and customs of the T.C.I.

Our journey first began when we were invited by Mr Vasco to visit the Enclave. Here we were able to see the prominence of limestone rock on the island – which enabled people in the past to dig wells easily due to the softness of the stone. The construction of the Enclave also highlighted the importance of the growing ‘tourist’ industry in the T.C.I.

We were then invited to visit the Amanyara where Miss Jackie took us on a walk in the area and highlighted the many special plants that grow on the T.C.I., explaining the importance and uniqueness of particular plants on the island.

We were also very fortunate to have Miss Mary and Mr Jonathan from the National Trust come in to share their skills and knowledge about the importance of weaving in the T.C.I., both in the past and now in the present. We even managed to have a go at weaving ourselves and are now in the process of weaving our own mats to sit on in the garden – let’s hope they turn out!

Year 3 ate the world and made lots of discoveries!

yr3-melon-oct-2016-6It all began with a melon! During our Science discussion when discovering facts about what the world is made of, we discovered some similarities between the world and a melon… and they were quite tasty!

From a slice of melon came a multitude of questions and journeys to research. Everyone in Year 3 chose an area related to our topics of either Rocks or Weather and went away and completed their own project to present to the class.

WOW! How impressed we all were. We had volcano’s erupting, hurricane and tsunami facts that blew us all away, fossil facts galore and some very exciting PowerPoint presentations with those extra special effects; board games and even a few dances that illustrated all the new facts we were sharing.

Thank you Year 3 for making learning fun!

Year 3’s Weather Channel is officially on Air!

For the past few weeks, Year 3 have been identifying the continents and the changes in climate around the world. We have been looking at the special words used to describe the different types of weather and have been recording the temperature, wind factor and rainfall each day.

Today we were quite excited to have recorded some rainfall and a drop in the temperature. An extra plus, is that we are all feeling very fortunate having had Hurricane Matthew pass us by.

Check out our video to learn more of what we have been learning about. Double plus – can you tell which of our ‘Collage Paintings’ are HOT or COLD?

Creativity feeds creativity!

Year 1Pirate ships, rockets, teepees, mud pies and more…

Traditionally, each year the children contribute to our annual PTA fundraiser by creating pieces of artwork to be auctioned. This year they are especially excited to be involved as proceeds from this Saturday’s event at Mango Reef will go towards enhancing our school playground.

In collaboration with the PTA, we hope to build a magical playground brimming with opportunities for more imaginative and creative play.

To help make our dreams a reality, we would like to tap into our diverse community expertise and businesses as much as possible. PTA/School funds will be utilized to pay for these local supplies and services.

Year 3 meet Oscar the Grouch!

yr3-oscar-grouch-may-2016 (3)On Tuesday morning Year 3 got a real surprise when they were taken to a ‘TOP SECRET’ destination. Unbeknown to them all, they were being taken to the “Beaches Resort’ to meet Oscar the Grouch.

This special treat was awarded to one of our Year 3 students, who for the past 4 consecutive years (since she was 5) has always (yes always) managed to get up really early to attend and participate in the TCI Shines Clean Up event that is organised by the TCHTA and DEMA each year.

Year 3 and 4 Create Beautiful Turtle Paintings

yr-3-4-turtl (1)A HUGE thank you to local artist Lucie Winton-Stubbs, from Diftwood Studios, for coming in to help create these beautiful paintings together with our Year 3 and 4 children.   What a multitude of skills and techniques were taught as she carefully took them through the process step-by-step.  I think you will agree that she encouraged oodles of artistic flair and talent to be creatively released onto the canvas. Aren’t they wonderful?!  Look closely and you will see lots of individual details – just like their creators, there are many similarities and yet they are unique in their design!

More in-depth learning about turtles in KS2

ks2-turtle-week-april-2016 (5)‘Turtle Week’ was a busy, fun and turtley exciting week in KS2.  We are very grateful to Miss Katharine and Mrs. Amy  from DEMA and Miss Jackie from Amanyara Nature Discovery Centre for sharing their vast knowledge and for creating such a wonderful collection of fun and exciting turtle activities!

“I felt the turtle activities were really fun and made me really happy,” said BD.

“I learnt that leatherbacks have collapsible lungs so that they can dive deep,” commented ED.

“I enjoyed Turtle Week because it raises awareness of the turtle situation, especially here in the T.C.I.,” added JW.

We started ‘Turtle Week’ first thing Monday morning with a superbly informative talk by Miss Katharine Hart (DEMA) about the current situation of turtles in the world, their life cycle and the different species. Then after break the children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in a round-robin of activities on the benches and field with Miss Katharine, Mrs. Amy (DEMA) and Miss Jackie (Amanyara.)

Whose teeth belong to who?

yr-3-teeth-landscapes-aprilTake a look at our ‘Teeth Landscape’ paintings. Can you guess who is behind each smile? In Science, Year 3 have been researching teeth. We have discovered many facts about our teeth. For example, did you know we have two sets of teeth during our lifetime – deciduous teeth and permanent teeth; unlike sharks whose teeth renew forever and ever!
