Spelling City

Looking for a fun educational site that can help children improve your child’s spelling skills. Miss Alison recommends that you check out Spelling City

This site:

– contains over 25,000 words, including plurals, contractions, future and past tenses
– uses a REAL human voice that says both the word and the word in a sentence
– has a ‘Teach Me’ function that spells out the word using both visual and auditory input to improve retention
– allows parents to enter and save their own spelling lists for their children
– lets children play games with their words or any saved lists
– enables parents to save and share their lists.

This is an American website so remember that our Grades will be one lower on this site – eg. Our Grade 1 is an American Kindergarten and our Grade 3 will be an American Grade 2.

Presently, this site is best viewed in Internet Explorer as it has some known issues with Firefox.

Grade 2 Challenge you to Solve their Numeracy Puzzle?

g2-310108.jpg

The Grade 2 enjoy solving numeracy problems. Our latest challenge was a computer-based puzzle and involved a nature reserve where six pairs of animals need to be given new homes in six different environments. The children were given clues, which included positional language, to help them decide which animals should live in which areas.

After, the children worked in pairs to position their own animals and wrote clues for another pair of children to use. They enjoyed doing these so much that that the class decided to make a large display so that children in other classes could have a go. The children all worked together to make a large-scale version of the Nature Reserve plan and movable animal cards. We hope you get a chance to come into the Computer Room and have a go at solving our Numeracy puzzle!

Click here to see some photos of the children making the map and close ups of some of the clues.

Today, Grades 2 and 3 visited the Environmental Centre in The Bight. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Brian Riggs, the curator, who showed us around the displays and talked to us about the different habitats that our animals and plants share with us. He also spoke to us about ways in which we can help to protect the environment.

How do you learn?

g2091106b.jpg

Everyday at school, children face new challenges. Some of us are better at one subject than another, some of us are good at singing and dancing and some of us are good at P.E. Everyone shines in their own way. You might find it interesting to complete this questionnaire online; it can show you what kind of learner you are. It will also tell you whether you are more dominant using your left brain (verbal, mathematical, analytical) or right brain (visual, artistic) or use both equally.
