Year 7 news from the Adirondacks

Year 7s from Provo Middle School have enjoyed a fantastic start to their residential field trip to Camp Echo Lake in the Adirondack Mountains.
A chilly first day was spent orienteering and kayaking/canoeing on Echo Lake. Children needed to apply a range of cooperation skills while they learned to read maps of camp or paddle their canoe together.
The evening was spent out in the woods playing games around a camp fire. Of course, children finished the day roasting marshmallows for S’mores.

Ahoy there!

Year 2 have started their Land Ahoy topic off with a great start!  We have gone slightly pirate crazy but amazing work is currently being designed, filmed, created, produced and even sewn!

We have some big projects that we are working on in class. One of them being a class stop animation of a pirate poem. Stop animation is a film process that allows the illusion of inanimate objects seemingly move on their own. So far, we have painted our back drops, created a pirate ship and started to build our main characters out of playdough. In order to create a successful animation, the children must take at least 12 photos for every single second of the film – that’s a lot of photos! We have enjoyed watching Morph and Wallace and Gromit as inspiration for our up – coming film.

We are googly about googly eyed learning in Year 1.

We are googly about googly eyed learning in Year 1.

Would you believe that you can use googly eyes for more than just googly eyed faces?  This week, Year 1 discovered that you can do maths (!!!) using these jiggly critters!

After becoming pretty successful at addition and subtraction equations, Year 1 upped their game and began to look at multiplication! We first began rote counting in 10s, then realising we were pretty good at that, progressed to 5s then after that we rocketed to counting in 2s!  Now, when it came to solving multiplication equations and  word problems, we discovered that googly eyes come in pairs…what better resource is there to help us work out two times table questions?

JK Science Mix-It-Pot!

In JK we created a Science experiment which involved layering sand, glitter, beads and sparkles. The children were offered the opportunity to explore the creation with their hands and various tools. They made many discoveries – one being that it would not mix… no matter however many times they stirred, the sparkles always remained on top! When a the sieve was introduced, the children discovered they could separate the sand and glitter from the sparkles and the beads.

As you can see, in the movie, the further addition of chopsticks, tongs and spoons and lots of pots made this a really fun, messy and tactile mixing and separating Science activity!

18 years on and the band is reforming!

One of the joys of teaching is to see the children you taught grow up and to listen to them reminiscing together about the things they remember about school.

About 18 years ago, this fantastic group of kids used to play in our then renowned steel band.

I’m so excited that we’ve managed to get most of this particular group back together to form our new Provo Primary and Middle School Alumni Band. I can’t wait for us to start performing again!

 

 

It’s Not Just Play, It’s LEARNING For Life

‘Play’ is the work of a child.  Over my many years of teaching and working with young children, I know it to be a given fact that play supports learning and is a very important to a child’s development stages. Play helps children learn and develop their cognitive, physical, communication, emotional, social, and creative skills.  When children play, it helps to build self-worth because it’s fun and they can become very much more engaged when the choice is theirs, rather than when chosen by an adult.

Year 4 Roman Brunch

Salve omnes!

As a celebration to end our study on the Romans, we had our amazing Roman Brunch. We would like to say thanks to the parents for supporting the event. The students loved every moment of it. They came all dressed up in their Roman outfits and were able to experience what life was like for the Romans when they feasted. We had roman music playing in the background as we enjoyed a meal of grapes, apples, pizzas, cheese and so much more.

Time was also spent getting familiar with the Roman Numerals and using them on their hand-made clocks as well as challenging themselves with Maths problems written using Roman Numerals. [Read more…]

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

As part of their English Literature classes, Year 6 has just recently finished reading John Boyne’s: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.  The novel falls into the historical fiction genre, thus the context of the story is centered on some of the atrocities committed during World War 2.  This has been an excellent complement to our history lessons too, which has also focused on different aspects of this war.

Having a sound grasp of the contextual features of the novel has enabled Year 6 to develop more critical approaches to studying plot developments, themes and characters present in the text.  Boyne’s novel contains many heroes and villains, and the Year 6 students have enjoyed getting to grips with how Boyne has presented them on paper; through physicality and personality.

How to help your child develop their pencil grip

The pencil grip… left or right handed, weak or strong, fist or finger tips. These are all things we observe when a child picks up a marker, pencil or crayon.

Have a look at our pictures and see how the Junior Kindergarten children are unconsciously strengthening their pencil grip via fun and challenging activities. I have incorporated dress up because almost entire action of dressing and undressing requires a strong pincer grip. By encouraging independence and providing opportunities for the child to have this freedom, we assist their muscle development.

Having strong wrists, hands and fingers helps children hold their pencil, as well as helping them write with endurance and fluency. The most efficient way to hold a pencil is the dynamic tripod grasp [Read more…]

Discoveries of the Ancient Egyptians continued… in Year 3

Thank you to all the parents who came into class and joined in the Ancient Egyptian celebrations. The children’s home projects were amazing. We had stories; games; dress up; singing and dancing; numerous presentations; talking mummies; a hieroglyphic quiz; pyramids that sparkled and lit up and had incredibly delicate models inside; read and nut tasting, models of ancient Egyptian buildings, with additional models and facts about the River Nile; mummified dolls and people models that we could dress up.  What a lot creative ideas!

We even got a chance to share our D.T. project of the ‘resurrected mummies’ where we used our pneumatic knowledge to make the mummy wake up…ekkk scary!

Jingle Jam resources a big hit with Early Years children

We are excited to share photos of the children enjoying and benefiting from some of the new extra resources that this years Early Years’ Christmas Jingle Jam has funded. From Toddlers to Kindergarten, the children are delighted and have been enthusiastic to explore them daily. It’s ‘Dolphin Week’ next week at Provo Primary and Middle School!

Find out more about our Dolphin Week activities and all about our community friends who will be supporting us in our newsletter.

Each year we dedicate a week to learning about wildlife in our local environment.  Dolphin Week follows on from our successful Osprey, Shark, Dolphin and Flamingo  weeks in years past (all corresponding to the names of our classrooms).

This year we will be discovering more about dolphins and learning why they are important in our ecosystem, conservation projects here in the TCI and how we can play a role in their protection and preservation.

 

Science Showcase in Year 6

Science lessons in Year 6 this term have been centered on the study of the human body.  Year 6 students have been busy identifying the main internal organs of the human body; and describing their functions.  In addition to this, they have also been examining some of the main body systems to further their understanding of how organs work together purposefully within the body.

With this in mind, Year 6 students were asked to make an individual presentation to their peers regarding an element of the human body which interests them.  Students were asked to present their material using a style of their choice; but they just had to ensure that their audience would gain something useful from the presentation made.

Year 6 & 7 Athletics Finals Festival

Monday 1st April, 9-11am.

We are excited to invite you to our planned Athletics Finals Festival next week at the National Stadium.

Children have spent the term learning to compete in a range of Track & Field disciplines. We have practiced the basic techniques and used video analysis to improve our performance and technique in each area. Check out our video analysis work here.

Children have chosen 2-3 events to compete in, balancing the freshness,energy and focus needed to give their best in each event. After all the refinement of their skills, children are now anxious to see how a bit of pressure impacts their performance!

We hope that you will be able to join us for this showcase event. It has been designed to give all students an equal and competitive opportunity to apply their learning. We are hopeful that this will be a dress-rehearsal for an inter-school athletics event after Easter.

As we complete our Athletics unit, please join me in thanking Ryan Jones and Jen Blain for giving their time to support teaching. Their input has been valuable and much appreciated!

Performance analysis leads to new records in PE!

Years 6 & 7 have been studying and practising Athletics this term, thinking about how track & field athletes are able to develop their technique in order to improve performance.

Students have spent time learning the specific techniques needed for each discipline: the shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump, triple jump, sprint and hurdles. All children then made an excellent effort to practise these skills.

In recent weeks, we then started to look at how video analysis can help sports people to identify strengths and weaknesses in their performance and technique. Children watched videos of record breaking athletes in order to identify “best examples” for each event. We then recorded each other at our PE sessions to see how we compared and where we could improve.

Terrific effort in our ‘Bear Hunt’ and ‘Body and Brain Triathlon’ activities

CONGRATULATIONS to every child for their great efforts in our recent “Bear Hunt” and Body and Brain Triathlon challenges.  Throughout the school, the children participated with enthusiasm, energy and mental prowess.

WELL DONE to the teachers for organising and supervising the various activities and to Mr. Toby and our Year 7s for helping to marshal the ‘biking, skating, scootering, running and walking’ challenge.

THANK YOU to all the kind family and community sponsors who have supported the children’s efforts to help raise funds for learning resources which they themselves will benefit from.

And finally, to all the parents who brought bike and scooters to school and to everyone who was able to come along and encourage the children with claps and cheers, your support was MUCH APPRECIATED.

‘Visual and Hands-On Is Minds-On’ Mathematical Learning

Parents and visitors got the chance to experience our ‘Visual and Hands-On Is Minds-On’ approach to mathematical learning across the school.  Students lead activities to participate in and had the opportunity to speak about and explain their learning. South Caicos School of Field Studies visit

Ahead of our upcoming local animal themed ‘Dolphin Week’, it was great that on Wednesday, the School of Field Studies (SFS) from South Caicos came in to teach and tell us all about them. There were all different types of activities for different personalities, soccer for active people, trivia with rewards for those with a sweet tooth, origami for crafty types and clay modelling and swimming in water for experimental, scientific types.

Two of one of the Year 5’s favourite activities were marine animal trivia and four corners. The four corners was based on dolphins echo-location. The children also had to identify dolphins by their significant tail features, observing closely markings, scars and curves. [Read more…]

Let’s go over to the Greenfield!

Have you ever visited the greenfield play area?

Here is a play area where the toddlers can run free. The toddlers love playing in their classroom and outside play area, but they look forward to having some play time on the grass, which they know as Greenfield. The moment their teacher’s ask, “Who wants to go to greenfield?” it’s a big yes from all of them. Shoes go on quickly, water bottles passed around or in their water buggy and they are at the gate waiting patiently for the nature walk that leads to Greenfield. It’s a moment of running free, kicking a ball or just moving at their own pace enjoying the cool breeze, dancing to action songs or kicking a ball. Greenfield provides an opportunity for almost anything safe and fun.

A teachable moment that just couldn’t be missed

“It took one seed to make a difference”

The Preschoolers are learning all about plants. One morning as the children ventured out for outside play, they were curious to find lots of brown leaves on the ground under one of the almond trees. They began to enjoy an instant lesson about why the leaves were changing colours and dropping, and how its almond seeds are edible fruits that can be planted to grow into a new tree.  The children were given opportunities to explore the leaves – from raking them to laying in them, looking up into the tree and enjoying shade it provides.

The leaves were gathered and taken to their sensory table for them to continue their exploration. Once the children were finished playing with them for a few days, the leaves were then used to make crafts projects like leaf rubbing, which were then used to make a big paper tree.

Today is Commonwealth Day – 2019

Diversity, Equality, Friendship – This year’s theme is ‘A Connected Commonwealth’.

We have a public holiday here in the Turks and Caicos and school is closed.

You may have heard of the Commonwealth Games, AKA ‘The Friendly Games’. A love of sport is just one thing that we all share.  They happen every four years and the next one will be in 2020.

It is not a competition between countries but a chance to inspire each other to greater achievements. It is a chance to meet as well as compete.

Remember to turn your clocks forward!

When local standard time is about to reach Sunday, 10 March 2019, 02:00:00 clocks are turned forward 1 hour to Sunday, 10 March 2019, 03:00:00 local daylight time instead.

Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour later on 10 Mar 2019 than the day before. There will be more light in the evening.

 

 

 

BOOK BONANZA

Here at Provo Primary, we had a feast of books, books, books on World Book Day! We kicked it off the night before with a wonderful, warm storytelling session where the children heard tales from all around the world, while cozied up in pjs.

The next morning started with an amazing parade from Toddlers to Year 6 of outstandingly creative characters from books. Then the children kindly had brought in piles of old books to swap. We managed to ensure that every child received a different book they had not read to add to their own home library. We even have waiting lists for some of the more popular reads!
